I don't know what sort of, um, uh, uh... challenging new information about the coronavirus I'm gonna be asked to process today— Sydnee: Well— Justin: —and so I just want to be a blank canvas on which you can paint your masterpiece. Sydnee: No. I—I thought maybe you saw the first line of my outline, my first order of business before I get into— Justin: Oh, yeah. Before we started recording Sydnee said, uh—I said, "How do you wanna, um, lead into this episode?" She said, "Well, first I have to apologize to Sweden." So, Sydnee? Sydnee: And the first line of my outline says [through laughter] "First apologize to Sweden." Just—I wasn't gonna forget, but I like to..

I am grateful for all the encouragement, help and ideas he gave me throughout the writing. He was the one who helped me to figure out the subject of my work which I am especially thankful for as it has been such a pleasure working on it! Secondly, I want to thank my boyfriend Patrick who shared enthusiasm for my subject, inspired me, and always encouraged me to keep up even when my mood was down. Also my friend Sarah who gave me a feedback on my thesis was a very big help and I am grateful. A special thank you goes to my parents who always believed in me and supported me. Thanks to all the teachers and professors who provided me with the necessary baggage of knowledge which I will now proudly carry through life. iii Foreword In my previous research paper I wrote about film discourse, thus, this time I wanted to continue with it but have something new, some kind of challenge which would interest me. After a conversation with my thesis guide, Professor Slembrouck, we decided to stick on to film discourse but to expand it.

strap digest line the AERIAL VIEW The par-three 17th at Oubaai. aSouth Africa’s new 100 Greatest continues to build in quality no every year, as the competition 1 intensifies for the top places. This year we announce a new No 1 for the first time in six years, with the Links at Fancourt surpassing Leopard Creek, which had been holding the crown since the 2005 issue. It’s not the only surprise we have for you. The top 10 has a new look to it. The time has come to reveal South Africa’s latest rankings. Prepare to greet nine new members, and a host of positional changes. grant leversha march 2011 • golfdigest.co.za 39 fancourt links takes over By Stuart McLean Photos by at no 1 Grant Leversha & Jamie Thom he Links at Fancourt is now the No 1 course in South TAfrica, having edged the peren- nial titleholder, Leopard Creek, by the statistical equivalent of a short putt. Leopard Creek had been No 1 for six straight years, so dropping to No 2 is a seismic shift for a club which had grown comfortable with its continuing domi- nance. And owner Johann Rupert will no longer have bragging rights over Fancourt’s Hasso Plattner, who was just as much an inspiration behind the build- ing of the Links as Rupert was in estab- lishing Leopard Creek in the mid-’90s. Leopard Creek’s slip to No 2 should not be deemed a demotion. This magnificent venue overlooking the Kruger National Park remains the benchmark when evaluating other courses in terms of its Memorability, Aesthetics and Conditioning.

Scott Campbell certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: PERFECTION, WRETCHED, NORMAL, AND NOWHERE: A REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN TELEVISION SETTINGS Committee: Chairperson* Date approved: ii ABSTRACT Drawing inspiration from numerous place image studies in geography and other social sciences, this dissertation examines the senses of place and regional identity shaped by more than seven hundred American television series that aired from 1947 to 2007. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1.
