No. 5 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, No. 6 seed Benoit Paire and No. 11 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov open their campaigns against a trio of Russians who survived difficult openers on Monday. Bautista Agut’s opponent, Next Generation player Karen Khachanov, saved a match point to eliminate Aljaz Bedene in a third-set tiebreaker. Not to be outdone, Teymuraz Gabashvili fought off two match points to defeat 2013 finalist Nicolas Almagro and advance to play Paire. Though Evgeny Donskoy did not face a match point, the 25-year-old Russian saved a set point to beat Facundo Bagnis and book his meeting with Dolgopolov. Five Spaniards are scheduled to play first-round singles matches on Tuesday, highlighted by a pair of all-Spanish showdowns on Pista Central. Coming off his run to the quarter-finals at ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo, Marcel Granollers takes on Daniel Muñoz de la Nava. Then, Albert Ramos- Viñolas faces 2014 Roland Garros junior finalist Jaume Munar, who is the only Spanish teenager in the Top 500 of the Emirates ATP Rankings (No. 425).
