Radiodowntown.ca 3 aaron halliday Singer/Songwriter Aaron Halliday is a Canadian country music singer/songwriter who lives in Kelowna, BC. Aaron has more than 20 years of playing behind him, with a wide open road ahead. Many years ago, Halliday received the surreal combination of a sweet compliment and serious kick in the butt when, while busking on Rideau in Ottawa, none other than Canadian legend Stompin’ Tom Connors dropped a $20 in his case and told him he was too good to be doing things this way and it was time to get off the street. Halliday took that, and the strong influences of both Merle Haggard and Alan Jackson, and determined to take the whole thing a whole lot more seriously. The influence of, along with a striking resemblance to, Alan Jackson has led to a 25+ year stint as an Alan Jackson tribute artist. Most recently, though, Halliday is coming into his own as a writer and solo artist of his own making in a style that he calls Dirt Country with a Roots and Traditional feel. Pre-Covid, Halliday was doing an astonishing 150 shows a year across Canada. He, and his aaronhallidaymusic.com wife Sharyn, are constantly working to book and www.facebook.com/aaron.halliday.5030 rebook shows and tours and have earned the kind of respect the leads to repeat bookings and Twitter @aaronhallidaymu appreciation for what they do. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Discussed here in relation to these Western European artists, I argue that my concept of cosy otherness derives from the internal other that is both European and foreign (Bohlman 2000: 189–193; Gelbart 2007: 64; McKerrell 2016: 126; O’Flynn 2014: 238). Unlike the conventional definition of a post-colonial other and the concept of an internal other, the cosy other is not ominous, competing, or negative. Rather, it appears charming and unthreateningly different with singular cultural traits such as a performance language other than English, a discernible regional dialect, or a pronounced regionalism. The cultural baggage accumulated over time – for example the troubled history of both Ireland and Scotland with England – is wrapped up in cosiness, niceness and nostalgia.

Rellstab, D. & N. Siponkoski (toim.) 2015. Rajojen dynamiikkaa, Gränsernas dynamik, Borders under Negotiation, Grenzen und ihre Dynamik. VAKKI-symposiumi XXXV 12.–13.2.2015. VAKKI Publications 4. Vaasa, (25–34). Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers Noora Karjalainen English Studies University of Vaasa Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee naisfolklaulajien nostalgisia mediarepresentaatioita. Artikkelissa kiinnitetään erityistä huomiota siihen, kuinka laulajien esityskieli vaikuttaa heidän representaatioidensa muodostumi- seen. Artikkelin teoreettisena pohjana on käytetty Astrid Erllin kulttuurisen muistin tutkimusta ja mää- ritelmiä ja Svetlana Boymin nostalgia-analyysiä. Analysoimalla laulajien kuvauksia eri tekstilähteissä artikkelissa pyritään selvittämään mitä yhteyksiä folklaulajien representaatioilla on nostalgiaan ja kult- tuurisen muistin eri tasoihin. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews.
