2019 NCBJ Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. - Early Ideas Regarding Extracurricular Activities for Attendees and Guests to Consider There are so many things to do when visiting D.C., many for free, and here are a few you may have not done before. They may make it worthwhile to come to D.C. early or to stay to the end of the weekend. Getting to the Sites: • D.C. Sites and the Pentagon: Metro is a way around town. The hotel is four minutes from the Metro’s Mt. Vernon Square/7th St.-Convention Center Station. Using Metro or walking, or a combination of the two (or a taxi cab) most D.C. sites and the Pentagon are within 30 minutes or less from the hotel.1 Googlemaps can help you find the relevant Metro line to use. Circulator buses, running every 10 minutes, are an inexpensive way to travel to and around popular destinations. Routes include: the Georgetown-Union Station route (with a stop at 9th and New York Avenue, NW, a block from the hotel); and the National Mall route starting at nearby Union Station. • The Mall in particular. Many sites are on or near the Mall, a five-minute cab ride or 17-minute walk from the hotel going straight down 9th Street. See map of Mall. However, the Mall is huge: the Mall museums discussed start at 3d Street and end at 14th Street, and from 3d Street to 14th Street is an 18-minute walk; and the monuments on the Mall are located beyond 14th Street, ending at the Lincoln Memorial at 23d Street. -

Code § 9-1008(d)(2)(A). PROJECT SUMMARY The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) submitted preliminary and final building plans for the Terminal B/C redevelopment project, which includes securing the National Hall with new checkpoints, a new North Concourse project, and the demolition of two existing hangars and central office building at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (Reagan National Airport). To secure the National Hall, the project will relocate the existing security checkpoints from inside Terminal B/C to two separate areas outside this terminal adjacent to the pedestrian bridges connecting to the National Airport Metrorail Station. These two new structures will be located above the exiting arrivals roadway and below the exiting elevated departures roadway. MWAA is proposing to use glass and metal panel materials for the new checkpoint buildings, noting this design aesthetic will be compatible with the existing Terminal B/C in terms of scale, use of materials and architectural features. The standing seam non-reflective metal roof for the new checkpoint buildings has a curvilinear form and has its lowest height on the elevation adjacent to the elevated roadway so the height will not compete with the monumental quality of the exiting Terminal B/C domes. -

The Congress hereby finds and declares that— (1) it is essential to the social and economic development of the District of Columbia to establish major centers of commercial and economic activity within the city; (2) such a center of activity would result from the development of a civic center located in the downtown area of the District of Columbia; (3) a civic center would (A) attract large numbers of visitors to the downtown area and result in increased business activity in the area surrounding the center; (B) enable national organiza tions to hold their conventions and other meetings in the District of Columbia and thereby encourage citizens from the entire Nation to visit their Capital City; (C) provide a new source of revenue for the District of Columbia as a consequence of its operations and the expanded commercial activities resulting therefrom; and (D) provide expanded employment opportunities for residents of the District of Columbia; (4) it is fitting that said civic center be established as a memo rial to the late President, Dwight D. -

The National Park Service (NPS) understands that the Element establishes policies to protect and enhance the many federal parks and open spaces within the National Capital Region and that the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) uses these policies to guide agency actions, including review of projects and preparation of long-range plans. Preservation and management of parks and open space are key to the NPS mission. The National Capital Region of the NPS consists of 40 park units and encompasses approximately 63,000 acres within the District of Columbia (DC), Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Our region includes a wide variety of park spaces that range from urban sites, such as the National Mall with all its monuments and Rock Creek Park to vast natural sites like Prince William Forest Park as well as a number of cultural sites like Antietam National Battlefield and Manassas National Battlefield Park. -
Gravelly Point Park and Roosevelt Island Capital Bikeshare Stations
Project Narrative – GWMP Capital Bikeshare Stations 2018 The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP), in partnership with Arlington County, proposes to install two additional Capital Bikeshare stations on GWMP-managed property. The stations complement existing stations throughout Arlington County, in addition to the many stations throughout the region. The Capital Bikeshare program is a regional transportation amenity for visitors and residents and has quickly become a critical form of public transportation. Continued participation in the system fulfills the goal of enhancing bicycle use at the park. Increasing bicycle use reduces traffic congestion, fossil fuel use and air emissions, and provides an additional and affordable form of access to destinations throughout the park. Plans for the two Capital Bikeshare stations are as follows. (1) Gravelly Point Park Location: Along the Mount Vernon Trail, east of the main parking lot. Size: 17 docks, and a terminal that measures 7’-11” tall by 1’ 8” wide. Pre-Treatment: The dock would be situated on a new 52.4" long by 15' wide concrete pad located east of the parking lot adjacent to the Mount Vernon Trail, approximately 5' to 10' north of the trail; the 4" tall slab will sit atop a 4" to 6" of gravel base, resulting in a limit of disturbance of 8" to 10" below finished grade. A crane will not be required for the installation of the station, installation is coordinated with Airport Authorities. Proximity: The Bikeshare station is located off the trail so bikes can be docked and un- docked easily without impacting trail operations. (2) Theodore Roosevelt Island Location: The north side of the southern parking lot. -

The Interagency Security Task Force invited key public and private stakeholders to participate as members of its Core Advisory Group. During early development of the plan, National Capital Planning Commission staff presented its security design work to dozens of audiences in Washington and around the country. The plan was released in draft for public comment in July 2002. The Commission received dozens of responses from groups and individuals and carefully consid ered those comments in the preparation of this final plan.
