Conductor, Composer and Violinist Jaakko Kuusisto Enjoys An
Conductor, composer and violinist Jaakko Kuusisto enjoys an extensive career that was launched by a series of successes in international violin competitions in the 1990s. Having recorded concertos by some of the most prominent Finnish contemporary composers, such as Rautavaara, Aho, Sallinen and Pulkkis, he is one of the most frequently recorded Finnish instrumentalists. When BIS Records launched a project of complete Sibelius recordings, Kuusisto had a major role in the violin works and string chamber music. Moreover, his discography contains several albums outside the classical genre. Kuusisto’s conducting repertoire is equally versatile and ranges from baroque to the latest new works, regardless of genre. He has worked with many leading orchestras, including Minnesota Orchestra; Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras; NDR Hannover, DeFilharmonie in Belgium; Chamber Orchestras of Tallinn and Lausanne; Helsinki, Turku and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestras; Oulu Symphony Orchestra as well as the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. Kuusisto recently conducted his debut performances with the Krakow Sinfonietta and Ottawa’s National Arts Center Orchestra, as well as at the Finnish National Opera’s major production Indigo, an opera by heavy metal cello group Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso. The score of the opera is also arranged and orchestrated by Kuusisto. Kuusisto performs regularly as soloist and chamber musician and has held the position of artistic director at several festivals. Currently he is the artistic director of the Oulu Music Festival with a commitment presently until 2017. Kuusisto also enjoys a longstanding relationship with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra: having served as concertmaster during 1999-2012, his collaboration with the orchestra now continues with frequent guest conducting and recordings, to name a few. -

You are currently reading your copy of the New Students’ Guide, a compact data pack- age put together by the Student Union and the organisation of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki). It contains some important things you as a new stu- dent need to know. If you have any questions, you can look for additional information at the Uniarts Helsinki website, intranet Artsi, or ask your department/degree pro- gramme director or your tutor. There is no shame in asking! You, just like any other new student at Uniarts Helsinki, have been appointed a per- sonal student tutor. A tutor is an older student, who wants to direct and guide you dur- ing the coming autumn. Feel free to ask your tutor about anything related to student life, university practices or studies. All tutors have been trained by ArtSU, and your tutor will act as your guide to Uniarts Helsinki, Student Union activities, your own academy and your new fellow students. You will meet your tutor at the beginning of the new students’ orientation period. It is my goal and that of our tutors to make you feel at home in our student community. -

Cover Subtext Critical 12
This Mortal Coil - You and your Sister (1991) (Chamber Pop Group) This songs was originally written and performed by Big Star's Chris Bell, who shares a place in the "27-club" beside Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Ivo Watts-Russell, then-owner of the 4AD-Label and Co-Founder of This Mortal Coil, selected in total 4 songs from Bell and Big Star for his rich output of obscure cover versions. Not obscure, but a bit odd, is the way the song was recorded, which can be found in the story of 4AD: Facing the other way - Martin Aston. What appears as an acoustic guitar chord, is a revolving midi-fied sequence, the sweet voices of (then) Pixies' Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses), sounding so much in harmony, but were recorded separately, just the string section ought to have played together. The midi-guitar resonates delicious and generously into your room, paving the way for honey sweet female voices, layered with some strings: just a perfect example of chamber pop. Nothing you can hear exposes anything about the tragedy surrounding this song and it's author to the listener. Radical Dance Faction - Hope (1991) (Chamber Pop Group) RDF is masterminded by Chris Bowsher, a musician from Hungerford, whose articulation could have mentored the Sleaford Mods. Meanwhile, his taste in creating spacial soundscapes including accentuation for voices and instruments, just provides a completely different mindset. This song talks about the indecision after terrorists attacks. With a speedy reggae rhythm basement that create the space for the pronounced, in my ears "jazzy" guitar riffs, a female voice contrasted by a male background singer, some meandering saxophone and hand percussion, the music leads the "long long road" to freedom from fear. -
