Venkateswaran 1 Devi: An Exploration of Hindu Goddess Iconography Evyn Venkateswaran ‘Devi’ is a collection of illustrations that emphasize the unifying feminine power in Hinduism, commonly known as shakti. Portrayed within are several deities that have unique stories and corporeal forms, re-contextualized through a modern lens. The ways in which I have achieved this is through my depiction of each of the goddesses, featuring a separate culture or ethnicity found within the Indian Subcontinent. This challenges the current market of Hindu illustrations where all goddesses share the same facial-features, skin-tone, and clothing. In addition, each of the artworks contain compositions that are unique and break away from the typical forward-facing, subject gazing directly at the audience compositions found in the aforementioned illustrations. Lastly, when creating my illustrations, I strove to capture a story or a meaning that would distinguish the identity of that specific deity. Initially, the technique in which I completed this project was through using either oil pastels or nupastels, later adding a layer of digital paint with Photoshop. However, due to different situational changes, I have finished my last images utilizing Procreate on my iPad Pro. With both situations, I focused on impressionistic mark-making, using several colors to create an iridescent quality in each of the pieces. Within my color palettes, I used golden-yellow in each of the pieces to draw significance between the goddesses, for example using the most amount of gold in Durga to emphasize how she’s the ultimate form of shakti. My intent of displaying these images is through posters that can either be used as iconography within worship or hung up as decoration. -

Patient was having Bad Obstetric History (BOH) in her previous 2 pregnancies with history of Ectopic pregnancy in her last pregnancy for which linear salpingostomy was done. Patient underwent diagnostic investigations and procedures to rule out the cause. She was found to have Bilateral Hydrosalpinx in her HSG findings. So, the treatment was planned accordingly, and she was treated with Ayurvedic regimen consisting of Shodhana and Shamana therapy. HSG was repeated 6 months after treatment which was found to be normal with Bilateral patent tubes and she was managed to conceive success- fully after treatment. Though she was a K/C/O BOH also, so she was provided all the necessary advice and exami- nations in her Antenatal period including Masanumasika Garbhini Paricharya and she delivered healthy female child of 2.8 kgs on 21.11.2020. -

It is considers metaphysical reality as metaphorically a woman and Shakti is regarded as the supreme godhead. It is believed that in antiquity the cult extended to all the countries and thrived in all the civilizations from the Nile and Euphrates to the Aegean Sea; "Looking to the east of the Euphrates we see the Dusk Divinity of India, the Adya-Shakti and Maha-Shakti, or Supreme Power of many names as Gagadamba, Mother of the World, which is the Play of Her who is named Lalita," (Sir John Woodroffe). In India, the Great Mother has been worshipped from the Himalayan mountains in the north to Cape Comorin in the extreme south; the word Cape Comorin is a corrupted form of Kanya Kumari or Kumari Devi, the Virgin Daughter, as the goddess is often called. The Vedas speak much of the goddesses. Their images are radiant with beauty, power and intelligence. From the Vedas themselves the Shakta Tantras, cult-books of the Goddess, derive their inspiration. In the Rig-Veda the goddess Sarasvati receives much homage: "Pure, Sarasvati, with all her bounties, rich in thoughts, inspires us towards truth, causes in us the required virtues, Sarasvati by her divinity awakens in us consciousness, illumines us in our thoughts." She is intelligence, science, arts, and all knowledge. The word shakti comes from the root "shak," "to be able, to have power". Any thing, any activity, has power; if the power be not visible, it is latent. -

Although these mobilizations have different motivations and goals, they have frequently emphasized the theological association between goddesses and women, connected through their common possession of Shakti (power). These campaigns commonly highlight the idea that both goddesses and Hindu women share in this power in order to inspire women to action in particular ways. While this association has largely been used as a campaign strategy by Hindu right-wing women’s organizations in India, it has also become a strategy employed in particular feminist campaigns as well. This article offers a discourse analysis of two online activist campaigns (Priya's Shakti and Abused Goddesses) which mobilize Hindu goddesses (and their power) in order to raise awareness about gender-based violence in India. I examine whether marginalized identities of women in India, in relation to caste, class and religious identity, are represented in the texts and images. To do so, I analyze how politically-charged, normative imaginings of Indian women are constructed (or maintained). This analysis raises questions about the usefulness of employing Hindu goddesses as feminist symbols, particularly in contemporary Indian society, in which communal and caste-based tensions are elevated.
