Bigbelly Boilerplate

About Bigbelly Bigbelly (www.bigbelly.com) is a prominent smart solution provider as the world leader of smart waste and recycling solutions. Deployed across communities, campuses and organizations in over 50 countries, the cloud-connected Bigbelly smart waste & recycling system combines smart, sensing, compacting stations with real-time software. Customers experience up to 80% collection reduction in addition to cleanliness, operational, economic, and environmental gains with Bigbelly.

Bigbelly System: Overview & Features

● Bigbelly is the world leader of smart waste & recycling solutions for public spaces. It is a proven solution that is deployed in all 50 states and in over 50 countries worldwide. When the company started in 2003, the mission was to transform one of the least efficient and resource heavy operations - waste operations.

● Communities, campuses, facilities and retailers deploy smart, solar-powered, sensor-equipped waste and recycling stations that communicate real-time status to collection crews to enable efficiencies. It is a cloud-connected platform for managing waste and providing actionable insights into operations. Collection crews are alerted when a station needs to be collected to avoid messy overflows and windblown litter and collecting when there’s still plenty of room.

● Customers experience up to 80% collection reduction in addition to cleanliness, operational, economic, and environmental benefits with the Bigbelly system. On average, cities with the Bigbelly system deployed at scale reduce their waste collections and associated operational expense up to 80%. Fewer trash collections = fewer refuse vehicles for shorter periods of time = fewer Greenhouse Gas emissions polluting the atmosphere; This all leads to a calmer, more sustainable environment. Other system benefits include … o Cleaner Public Spaces: Bigbelly transforms public space cleanliness and aesthetics with total waste containment – eliminating overflows, visible waste, windblown litter, and critter access. Create cleaner, greener, safer pedestrian spaces with reduced truck traffic, noise & congestion.

o Increased Productivity: Communities experience up to 80% collection reductions with a smart waste fleet and compaction technology. This results in decreased truck rolls, vehicle wear, and fuel consumption. Informed decision making with data and analytics enables labor to be reallocated to more meaningful projects.

o Measurable Sustainability: Introduce and measure the diversion rate of a public space recycling program. Bigbelly offers multiple streams at each station to encourage proper recycling. Reduce carbon footprint & greenhouse gas emissions with decreased fuel usage and vehicle pollution.

● The Bigbelly smart waste and recycling system is comprised of two parts: (1) the smart, connected stations on the street and (2) CLEAN software - the centralized dashboard from which system set up, management, monitoring, and optimization is done.

● You might recognize Bigbelly as a smart trash can, but it is so much more … o It is smart with a CPU, cell and GPS antennas inside o It accommodates multiple waste streams (landfill, recycling, compost) at a single location 3

o It has an enclosed design with the iconic “hopper” that keeps waste in and pests out o It’s fullness sensors know when the station is reaching capacity and needs to be collected o Compactors are solar powered – harvesting energy to enable compactions and communications o The High Capacity stations compacts to hold 5x the amount of waste as a standard bin (150 gallons vs. standard traditional bin’s 30-gallon capacity)

● More importantly, the cornerstone of the Bigbelly system is the CLEAN Management Software. o The smart stations communicate real-time status directly into CLEAN Management Console. o Auto-generated email, text, and online notifications indicate which stations need to be collected to drive increased productivity while eliminating overflows and unnecessary collections. o Users can optimize collection routines, measure and benchmark operations, and realize location-based waste patterns (volume, fill rate, collection activity) across a Bigbelly smart waste fleet. o The software provides a suite of tools powered by real-time data and advanced analytics o The measurable data from the stations on the street provides insights so that you can report on metrics such as waste volume, diversion, and collection savings.

● Today, Bigbelly provides a public right-of-way platform to deliver smart solutions to cities and host communications infrastructure. Communities and solution providers share the challenge of how and where to deploy Smart City solutions and communications infrastructure in the public right-of-way without additional clutter or negative aesthetic impact. The platform modernizes a core city service and is optimal for hosting additional technologies since it is ubiquitous and where the people are. The platform is easy to access and can hide technology in plain sight.

Bigbelly System: How It Works

The stations on the street collect garbage as pedestrians deposit their waste into the appropriate stream available at each location. The station is continuously sensing the amount of waste within and communicating that fullness status into to CLEAN. When it reaches full capacity, and needs to be emptied, the station communicates the change in status and collection crews are notified. This real-time insight allows crews to focus their efforts on only those stations which need to be collected no more picking up nearly empty bags … of trash or cleaning up the overflows from waste bins piled high.

Planning Your Bigbelly Ribbon Cutting Press Event

Congratulations on your new or upcoming Bigbelly smart waste and recycling deployment! Your ribbon cutting represents an important announcement for your community. This guide is designed to help you plan your event. Remember to apply your own community spirit, best practices, and experience to create a compelling Bigbelly announcement in your community!

Date & Time: ______ ● Select a date several weeks in advance when possible. Typically, events planned Monday through Friday garner best attendance (with Tuesday through Thursday being top choice) and enable officials to attend. ● Check for schedule conflicts with other events (city/town/campus/community calendars, etc.) especially those which likely have the same attendees that you desire. ● In general, events between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. often receive the most media coverage – After the morning news rush, avoiding lunchtime, and before dusk. It is important to get the event started quickly out of respect for the busy schedules of your attendees.

Location: ______ ● It is recommended to hold the event and ribbon cutting at a Bigbelly station location. Think of the most popular public spaces and areas where a nearby audience could gather in passing Be it a downtown … main street sidewalk, popular waterfront boardwalk, busy park center near walking trails and amenities, etc. ● Alternatively, if desired before stations are installed, you could consider moving a station to a convenient event location, such as in front / inside a community building. ● If planning an outdoor event, you can plan ahead by choosing an alternative date or location in case of inclement weather. Rain Date/Location: ______

Participants to Consider:

VIP / Speakers (3-5): Attendees: Community Officials (Mayor, Town Local media • • Manager, President, Council Members, etc.) Individuals whom will be working with the Key Stakeholders Involved with Bigbelly • • Bigbelly system (collections crews, etc.) Deployment Community members – Ex. Nearby schools, Bigbelly Stakeholder (Executive team or • • related volunteer associations account manager) Neighboring businesses • Community leaders and elected officials • Event Planning Suggestions: ● Invitees: Invite the local media, guest speakers, and local community members, including local merchants near the location placements for the Bigbelly units. ● Guest Speakers: Contact any guest speakers early so they have enough time to prepare remarks and tell them how long they will have to speak - this is typically very brief (2-3 minutes). ● Length: The event is usually brief (about 20 to 30 minutes) and should be planned ahead of time with regard to speaker order, the actual ribbon cutting or unveiling, and any other activities you plan to include.

7

● Example of community engagement: Have a group of students from a nearby school attend the ceremony as part of a recycling lesson, bring bottles/paper and have them properly toss their recyclable materials into the smart recycling units after the ribbon cutting for an educational lesson and great photo op! ● Cutting the Ribbon: Decide who will cut (or untie if you have a bow instead) the ribbon and notify them in advance. Have the cutter (and any other attendees you desire) stand around the Bigbelly station. They should face the audience with station and ribbon between them and the audience. ● Materials: Bigbelly station, ribbon, large scissors, podium, microphone, A/V equipment, signage (retractable banner works well), camera. ● Capture the moment: Decide if you are hiring a photographer / videographer or if someone from your team / press team is capturing the event. You can expect the media to also capture the event but it’s highly suggested that you capture it on your own.

Sharing the News: ● Prepare a media advisory to announce the ribbon cutting. Create and distribute their launch or ribbon cutting announcement in the form of either a blog / local newsroom announcement or a media advisory. This enables the information to be easily distributed with all key details. Below is an example of each: Yerba Buena - , CA - Newsroom / Blog Post: https://ybcbd.org/news/making-yerba-buena-cleaner/ City of Atlanta, GA - Media Advisory: https://www.atlantaga.gov/Home/Components/News/News/10275/632 ● Prepare a press release to announce Bigbelly coming to your community. Bigbelly can provide you with a briefing document with key information about to use in the press release, a quote from a Bigbelly representative, etc. Below are the press releases from each of the above example Bigbelly events: Yerba Buena - San Francisco, CA - https://ybcbd.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/YBCBD-Bigbelly-Unveiling.pdf City of Atlanta, GA - https://www.atlantaga.gov/Home/Components/News/News/10281/1338 ● Designate a contact person and method of contact to handle incoming inquiries ● Local news outlets should be contacted a few weeks in advance, and again a few days in advance of the event – Send the media advisory to provide all of the relevant information. Invite both writers and the photo desk at your local papers, as well as producers and reporters from broadcast outlets. ● After the event, drop the press release capturing the announcement and introduction of Bigbelly in your community. Include photos with captions and names of all people in the photograph from the event. ● After the event, send the press release and photos to local newspapers and post it on the newsroom on your website, social media channels, in any relevant newsletters, or using any other appropriate means of getting the news out to the community. Bigbelly will also share your announcement! 8
