In the far futurethe inhabitants of Tarsus Six face a desperate struggle to evacuate their world before their sun, Tarsus Ultracollapses into a cataclysmic spatial anomaly. But it soon becomes clear that the Doctor has an agenda of his own. The race is on to escape the destruction Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) Tarsus Six and the devastating shockwave that will follow, reaching out and destroying everything in its wake. The station orbits a world called Tarsus Sixpart of a system that has been heavily colonised by humanity. It's a world in chaos, and for good reason: it only has minutes to live. The planet's sun, Tarsus Ultrais a giant, but something is wrong: it's tearing itself apart, not as a supernova, but in some other, unknown way. Truthfully, the damage is done; the star has already released a massive shockwave that has destroyed the inner colonies, and is closing in on Tarsus Six. wants to save everyone, but the Doctor sadly tells her they can't — it's too Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7). Ships are fleeing the planet, some making it, some not. It's the same on the station. Masquerading as authorities from Earth, they get Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) onto the Obscurathe last ship leaving the station. On the way, Ace sees a group of cultists who worship the star and believe the shockwave will cause them to evolve. She makes contact with one girl in the group, NineJayand at the last minute uses the ship's transmat cubicle to bring her aboard and save her life — though it angers some of the passengers, who blame the cultists for the destruction of the star. The ship, with the Doctor's help, barely outruns the shockwave just as it destroys the station and Tarsus Six. She asks why they are here; he tells her they are here to rob a bank vault. Ace is understandably disturbed, but the Doctor promises that they Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) not actually stealing; the artefact he wants belongs to him, sort of. It's Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) cube called the Voice of Stone, in the locals' vernacular. They had to come here, because the Voice's location can only be verified here and now. The Doctor says it will speak to him, if he can get to it. They reach the vault, and Ace goes to distract a sound-seeking security drone that has been following them, thus buying them some time. The Doctor has found the vault to be already unlocked — and the Voice has been stolen. Suddenly the alarms go off, and they are arrested by the captain. It is revealed that they are not diplomatic envoys. The Doctor reveals that the Voice is missing, and that they did not steal anything. They are interrupted when the engines suddenly fail. OhOne takes them with him to check the engines, as the door won't lock without power; the Doctor restores the power, but the engines are still dead. The Doctor bargains for their freedom, in exchange for helping with the situation. KaySix discovers that the engines Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) actively sabotaged; security reveals that it was the girl, NineJay, whom Ace rescued. Ace goes to look for her, and finds her in her stateroom. NineJay reveals she was sent to join the ship so she could disable it, thus allowing everyone aboard to die in the shockwave and evolve; she says she almost missed the ship, and is grateful that Ace helped her. Ace lectures her for taking the choice from everyone aboard, but NineJay is unpersuaded; and she reveals that she took the Voice of Stone, or rather, "set it free". And now the shockwave is beginning to arrive; its outer fringes act as a warning shot against the ship. Time is running out. NineJay gives the Voice to Ace, and reveals that she used the ventilation shafts to sneak around. It responds to her, stunning NineJay. KaySix arrives and tries to break into the stateroom; Ace escapes through the vents, with NineJay following. As they make their way to the engine room, OhOne broadcasts an announcement, indicating that the ship cannot escape the shockwave. However, they have a plan to use the main power to create a counterforce that will shield them until the shockwave passes. The ship will then be adrift, but can be recovered later with its passengers. However, someone must stay with the power unit to trigger it, and will die in the Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7). OhOne volunteers. Ace arrives after the power unit is launched. Ace tells the Doctor her story, and turns over the Voice to him. The cube wakes up and releases an image of a strange man, who is revealed to be the Doctorwhich speaks to both of them. It can't hear them, but it remembers the conversation, and speaks accordingly. He acknowledges that he sent messages to the previous six Doctors, and asks the for help. The future Doctor also tells the Seventh Doctor to be nicer to Ace. Ace realises that this means the Doctor will survive The shockwave is arriving, just two minutes away. OhOne has activated the counterforce wall, and is still alive He must be there to keep it active. Ace suggests that someone could take his place, but the Doctor won't let her do it. NineJay volunteers, however; she had long since chosen to die in the shockwave anyway. The Doctor is distrustful, thinking she will deactivate it and let everyone die; but she concedes that Ace was right to say that she can't take the choice from everyone else. It's a conflict of faith for her, not on her own behalf, but on that of everyone else. She transmats herself to the power unit, and transmats OhOne back. With the shockwave passing by, the Doctor and Ace are free to go. Ace can't help wondering if there's some chance that NineJay was right — could she, somehow, have survived? They may never know. She cautions OhOne to be grateful — and maybe, he'll return the favour for someone in the future. Fandom may earn an affiliate commission on sales made from links on this page. Jul 25, David Monroe rated it really liked it Shelves: audiodoctor-whoexpanded-universemedia-tie-inlibrary-dl. Which is odd, since Six Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) Seven as presented in the Classic series, are my least favorite Doctors. Go figure. One thing that I haven't mentioned about this year-long 50th Anniversary AudioGo series -- there is a story arc that ties them all together. At first it's subtle, but by the seventh book and Doctor, it's pretty clear; The is in trouble. So much trouble that he needs the help of all of his previous selves. In each book he appears as a voice or a hologram and asks each Doctor for one specific thing. Of course, the Doctor and Ace have just sent the Captain off to his certain doom a few minutes before they get this request. I liked how Ace, the narrator, instantly recognizes this man, this 11th as the Doctor. She says he's young and yet, at the same time, so old Ace, as written in the series, could sometimes be annoying, but she was always very smart. Very intuitive. If you listen to the Big Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) Seventh Doctor adventures, Ace really comes into her own as a character. This is the companion we meet here. Sep 20, Erin rated it it was amazing Shelves: action-adventureaudiobooksdoctor- whofuturisticlittle-shorties. This was enjoyable. Plot was predictable, but good. I enjoyed meeting Ace for the first time well for me. All in all, I liked it and it entertained me while I was sewing a baby onesie. Sep 19, Adam Duclos rated it really liked it. This was good! Read by and from the perspective of the actress who played Ace, the the Seventh Doctor's companion, this was a fun listen. The Doctor and Ace bluff the captain of the last transport leaving the the dying planet just before it was going to leave, gaining passage for themselves and the Tardis, because the object calling the Doctor was on board. So they board the ship, and their about to take off, but Ace sees a girl her age who had been among the 'wish for death' group, but now seemed to want to escape after all! The airlocks were locked, but with a few gestures, the girl indicated that Ace should use a handy teleport device to Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) her in, which Ace does. The Doctor then tried to steal the thing giving him the mental tug, whose description seemed to match that of those psychic message cubes the Time Lords use. But it wasn't there! They were blamed for the theft anyway, but then the ship started having problems too! The engines turned off, and they couldn't be turned on before the ship was vaporized by the supernova! And also, the Tardis didn't work because of science interference! They were doomed! As it turned out, the girl Ace let on was a religious zealot who somehow managed to steal the Doctor's cube, as well as turning off the ship's engines! At this point, everyone started to run around like crazy, but Ace eventually convinced the girl, who believed that everyone should be killed by the supernova for their own good, and also happened to worship that cube, that maybe she should let everyone make their own decision about that. Ace and girl went to find the Doctor, but he was at a life pod hatch, having just sent the Captain out on a suicide mission to do something that would jump start the engines! The girl gave the Doctor his cube, and it was indeed a message cube! Much like the other entries in the series, the message proved to be from the 11th Doctor, and the message was that However, the girl, impressed that the message cube that she revered spoke to the Doctor, volunteered to switch Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) with the Captain using the same teleport system that Ace got her on board with, she turned on the thing she had to turn on, and they were saved! The girl was totally vaporized, though, but since that was what she wanted, that was all good. Well, it was maybe too descriptive there at the beginning, and it took a while for the story to actually get going. Other than that, well, the Doctor was a bit to blase about all the deaths, and uncharacteristically fatalistic as well. He gave up way too easily! Oh, and it was a bit weird that this random girl was such a great thief and such a great starship engineer. Overall though, very good story! Aug 25, Shannon Lush rated it really liked it. Sophie Aldred narrates a strong and touching story that stands as among the best of the series so far. Sticking to the immediacy of the script rather than overacting, she gives a very good performance that enhances a very good story. The familiar, poppy and upbeat McCoy theme is present and it must Sophie Aldred narrates a strong and touching story that stands as among the best of the series so far. The familiar, poppy and upbeat McCoy theme is present and it must be said that the incidental music throughout is extremely well done and effective in conveying the various moods of the piece. The well-drawn supporting characters are performed by Aldred in different voices. This is very appreciated by the listener, as it helps to differentiate them. Nanjay, the member of a fatalistic religious cult that considers the strange artefact The Doctor seeks, called the Voice Of Stone, as a holy relic, is a strong supporting character that is given much to do, and the listener explores the different sides to her. Like , her final fate is touching and leaves The Doctor and his companion moved to great emotion. It is the powerful writing combined with an excellent performance by Aldred that brings Nanjay to live. In many ways, this story is too ambitious for a format with the limitations of an audio play. The main plot centers around a desperate flotilla of starships, full to bursting with thousands of beings, breaking away from a dying planet before a massive shockwave from a sun rips the planet to pieces. This is followed by a pedal-to-the-metal race of these ships to reach a point where the shockwave will dissipate and not destroy them in its wake. Conveying the enormity of the events stretches the audio bed to its limit, and unfortunately results in a few scenes that fail to live up to expectations. The plot itself would Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) a stretch for the New Series to bring to life, let alone an audio play. There remains a sense of epic scale that unfortunately is somewhat of a wasted opportunity here. It is a very entertaining and compelling story that hooks the listener in at the outset and gives both The Doctor and Ace great lines and much to do. There are no forgotten or unused plot threads. The seventh story is the series Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) read by Sophie Aldred, who played "Ace", the last companion Doctor Who: Shockwave (Destiny of the Doctor 7) the classic TV series. The Doctor and Ace arrive on a space station just as the solar system it is in is about to be destroyed by a stellar anomaly. Most of the action takes place on the large passenger liner bearing the last of the fleeing refugees from the system. It's the sort of setting that would be ideal for a longer story - a novel, perhaps, or at least a 2-hour audio play. Here, however, the The seventh story is the series is read by Sophie Aldred, who played "Ace", the last companion of the classic TV series. Here, however, the plot is necessarily curtailed by the available length, and we don't have much room the explore the wider ramifications of what's happening.
