You may share this work for non-commercial purposes only, provided you give attribution to the copyright holder and the publisher, and provide a link to the Creative Commons licence. 25 Chapter 1 P RINCESS MONONOKE : A GAME CHANGER Shiro Yoshioka If we were to do an overview of the life and works of Hayao Miyazaki, there would be several decisive moments where his agenda for fi lmmaking changed signifi cantly, along with how his fi lms and himself have been treated by the general public and critics in Japan. Among these, Mononokehime ( Princess Mononoke , 1997) and the period leading up to it from the early 1990s, as I argue in this chapter, had a great impact on the rest of Miyazaki’s career. In the fi rst section of this chapter, I discuss how Miyazaki grew sceptical about the style of his fi lmmaking as a result of cataclysmic changes in the political and social situation both in and outside Japan; in essence, he questioned his production of entertainment fi lms featuring adventures with (pseudo- )European settings, and began to look for something more ‘substantial’. Th e result was a grave and complex story about civilization set in medieval Japan, which was based on aca- demic discourses on Japanese history, culture and identity.

religions Article Constructing and Contesting the Shrine: Tourist Performances at Seimei Shrine, Kyoto Mia Tillonen Graduate School of International Media, Communication, and Tourism Studies, Hokkaido University, Sapporo 060-0817, Japan; [email protected] Abstract: Japanese Shinto shrines are popular pilgrimage sites not only for religious reasons, but also because of their connections to popular culture. This study discusses how tourism is involved in the construction of the shrine space by focusing on the material environment of the shrine, visitor performances, and how the shrine is contested by different actors. The subject of the study, Seimei Shrine, is a shrine dedicated to the legendary ﬁgure Abe no Seimei (921–1005), who is frequently featured in popular culture. Originally a local shrine, Seimei Shrine became a tourist attraction for fans of the novel series Onmyoji¯ (1986–) and the movie adaptation (2001). Since then, the shrine has branded itself by placing themed statues, which realize the legend of Abe no Seimei in material form, while also attracting religious and touristic practices. On the other hand, visitors also bring new meanings to the shrine and its objects. They understand the shrine through different kinds of Citation: Tillonen, Mia. 2021. interactions with the objects, through performances such as touching and remembering. El certamen organizado por FICOMIC ofrecerá numerosas actividades culturales, así como exposiciones, conferencias, firmas de autores, talleres, además de contar con la participación de destacados autores de manga. Este año dispondremos de más actividades participativas que nunca. Queremos que Manga Barcelona no sea sólo la gran fiesta del manga, anime, cosplay y la cultura japonesa, sino también un gran festival donde el principal protagonista sea el público. Este año el Salón del Manga de Barcelona cumple su 25 edición; 25 años de crecimiento y de éxitos, logrando crear un gran referente en España en la que entre todos los participantes tales como expositores, autores, conferenciantes, visitantes, otakus y medios de comunicación entre otros, hemos contribuido poniendo a disposición de cualquiera un punto de encuentro para los amantes del manga, anime, cosplay, de la gastronomía japonesa y de la estética y cultura del País nipón en general. Es una edición muy especial llena de sorpresas; la más remarcable quizá, nuestro cambio de denominación, pasando a llamarnos Manga Barcelona y estrenando nuevo logo. Obor: Český jazyk + Historie Recepce japonské literatury v českém kontextu Reception of Japanese literature in the Czech context Bakalářská práce Opava 2020 Vedoucí bakalářské práce: PhDr. Hana Bednaříková, Ph.D. Abstrakt Předmětem bakalářské práce bylo zkoumání recepce a obrazu japonské literatury v českém kulturním prostředí. Dalším z cílů bylo zjistit, jaká je úroveň informovanosti českých středoškolských studentů ve sledované oblasti mimoevropských literatur, a to zejména ve srovnání klasicky vyučovaným evropským a západním kánonem textů. Vyhodnocení probíhalo na základě dotazníkového šetření u 307 respondentů a výsledky ukazují, že zájem studentů především o japonskou literaturu je vysoký i přes skutečnost, že daný okruh mimoevropských literatur je v osnovách i v praxi výuky opomíjen. V závěru práce přinášíme konkrétní sociometrická doporučení, která jsou výsledkem našeho výzkumu. Abstract The main object of this bachelor thesis was research of reception and image of japanese literature in czech cultural enviroment. The next of the goals was to discover the level of awareness of czech high school students in the watched topic of non-European literature, especially in the comparison with the classically taught European and Western canon of texts. The evaluation was based on a questionnaire survey of 307 respondents and the results show that students‘ interest especially in japanese literature in particular is high, despite the fact that the given range of non- European literatures is neglected in the syllabus and in the teaching practice likewise. In conclusion of this thesis we bring the concrete sociometric reccomendations, which are the result of our research.
