Rivers

By Carl B. Parks

Where the rivers in their might, Flood eternal to the sea; Where the nights are soft and bright, That is where I want to be.

By some winding stream remote, With my campfire let me lie, While my thoughts serenely float, With the sweet smoke to the sky.

And the radiance of the starlight Reflected in the stream, Makes its silver surface bright, A magic pathway seem.

In the language of the rivers The stream will seem to say; "Come with me, my friend, and I Will wash your cares away."

There is where one really feels His kinship to the sod; There is where his heart reveals How near to him is God.

This poem was inspired by a canoe trip from Des Moines, Iowa to St. Louis, Mo. taken in 1928. Carl began in 1915, received the and remained dedicated to the ideals of Scouting until the end of his life in 2003. Carl believed the three foundation stones of his life were his family, his church, and Scouting.
