    THE LOOKOUT Volume XLV I Number 4 July - August 2009 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE HUNDRED PEAKS SECTION Angeles Chapter Caltrans Opens Angeles Crest Highway On Wednesday, May 20, 2009 Caltrans opened the eleven mile stretch of the Angeles Crest Highway from Islip Saddle to Vincent Gap which had been closed for several years. After a brief ceremony marking the completion of a new bridge that spanned a completely washed out section of roadway, Caltrans workers opened gates at Vincent Gap and at Islip Saddle, and vehicles once again were able to drive the length of the Angeles Crest Highway from Wrightwood to La Cañada. Once again we HPSers will be able to start our hikes to peaks such as Throop, Lewis, Hawkins, Burnham, Copter Ridge and other peaks from Dawson Saddle; or we can devise practical hikes involving car shuttles that span the newly opened stretch of highway. As the story goes,·one of Vasquez's men, Jose Silver Moccasin Trail Gonzales, lived in a log cabin in the area where the visitor center now stands. Gonzales guarded the hideout and horses. His battle with a huge Chilao to Horse Flals Campgrounct bear, which he killed using only a knife, earned him the name Chillia­ 2 miles round trip; 200-foot elevation gain roughly translated as "hot stuff." Altadena Dr. Altadena, CA 91001 June 2, 2007 Dear Scouts and Scouters, The assemblage of documents contained in this package is from several sources: the Camp Promotion package is something our troop members prepared several years ago to encourage Rose Bowl District troops to camp more frequently. We offered this presentation in our role at that time as the Camp Promotion Team for our Order of the Arrow chapter. We also develop the Ten Essentials sheet, Equipment Recommendations, Recipes and Backpacker’s Dutch oven sheets. The two sheets detailing various foods and their nutritional properties come from a 1987 publication Adventure Organizer/Planner, by Adventurease; it’s full of very useful information. The Check List & packing diagram is from a REI handout, also several years old but quite useful. This is Troop1’s seventh effort at demonstrating a backpacking site at Expo after many years of conducting the First Aid Merit Badge Booth. Our previous booths were well received by visitors who contributed some thoughts and suggestions. We welcome your comments and hope to learn as much as we hope to teach. We may be old dogs, but we’re always ready to learn new tricks.
