This issue we introduce you to our new style of newsletter. We believe a large part of our ministry is to profile and present unreached people groups to Christians around the world. Thanks to the Lord, we have seen and heard of thousands of Christians praying for these needy groups, and efforts have been made by many ministries to take the Gospel to those who have never heard it before. Often we handed to our printer excellent and visually powerful color pictures of minority people, only to be disappointed when the completed newsletter came back in black and white, losing the impact it had in color. A few months ago we asked our printer, just out of curiosity, how much more it would cost if our newsletter was all in full color. We were shocked to find the differences were minimal! In fact, it costs just a few cents more to print in color than in black and white! For this reason we plan to produce our newsletters in color. Hopefully the visual difference will help generate even more prayer and interest in the unreached peoples of Asia! Please look through the pictures in this issue and see the differ- ence color makes. -

The present study tries to examine the role of Reang Home gardens in North Tripura district of Tripura. A total of 38 Home gardens in 4 hamlet or pada were randomly selected for the study. Total plant inventory and interview method were used to collect data. In Reang Home gardens at North Tripura District overall 148 species under 130 genera belonging to 55 families have been inventoried. Leguminosae and Poaceae were the most dominant families. Forty percent of the Reang Home garden plants were found to harbour edible plant species. (food, Fruits, vegetable, pulses, spices), 22% medicinal, 18% ornamental, 4% timber, 3% fine wood and other categories remain little over 3%. Reang Home garden shows a good diversity with multiple uses. Most Reang peoples rely on folk health care traditions. Domestication of wild plants for food, medicine and other purposes are an important activity. Chapter 2 INTER-ETHNIC CONFLICTS IN NORTH EAST INDIA India as a whole has about 4,635 communities comprising 2,000 to 3,000 caste groups, about 60,000 of synonyms of titles and sub-groups and near about 40,000 endogenous divisions (Singh 1992: 14-15). These ethnic groups are formed on the basis of religion (Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, etc.), sect (Nirankari, Namdhari and Amritdhari Sikhs, Shia and Sunni Muslims, Vaishnavite, Lingayat and Shaivite Hindus, etc.), language (Assamese, Bengali, Manipuri, Hindu, etc.), race (Mongoloid, Caucasoid, Negrito, etc.), caste (scheduled tribes, scheduled castes, etc.), tribe (Naga, Mizo, Bodo, Mishing, Deori, Karbi, etc.) and others groups based on national minority, national origin, common historical experience, boundary, region, sub-culture, symbols, tradition, creed, rituals, dress, diet, or some combination of these factors which may form an ethnic group or identity (Hutnik 1991; Rastogi 1986, 1993). These identities based on religion, race, tribe, language etc characterizes the demographic pattern of Northeast India. Northeast India has 4,55,87,982 inhabitants as per the Census 2011. The communities of India listed by the „People of India‟ project in 1990 are 5,633 including 635 tribal groups, out of which as many as 213 tribal groups and surprisingly, 400 different dialects are found in Northeast India. Besides, many non- tribal groups are living particularly in plain areas and the ethnic groups are formed in terms of religion, caste, sects, language, etc. (Shivananda 2011:13-14). According to the Census 2011, 45587982 persons inhabit Northeast India, out of which as much as 31169272 people (68.37%) are living in Assam, constituting mostly the non-tribal population. -

Abstracts in alphabetical order “They are taking our land”: a comparative perspective on indigeneity and alterity in Meghalaya and the Chittagong Hill Tracts Ellen Bal (VU University Amsterdam) & Eva Gerharz (Ruhr‐University Bochum) The border region of Bangladesh, India, and Burma has been the scene of dozens of tribal autonomy conflicts since the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947 (Baruah 2007). These conflicts have unsettled the whole region, impacted international relations, threatened national stability, and caused a deep sense of insecurity among the locals. The majority of these conflicts pivot on ‘sons‐of‐the-soil’ claims, invoking notions of autochthony to legitimize occupational rights to lands and regional autonomy (Cf. Vandekerckhove 2009). Most conflicts link up to the globalized discourse on indigenous rights, which has been particularly powerful since 1993 (the United Nations’ ‘Year for Indigenous Peoples’). Our paper addresses the notions of citizenship, indigeneity and alterity (otherness) at work in Meghalaya and the Chittagong Hill Tracts from a comparative perspective. Although a number of similar issues are at stake, the situations in the two regions differ, partly because of different political contexts which frame these discourses. British colonial policies had been geared towards the isolation of the hills from the plains in order to secure the available resources for the colonial state (Van Schendel 1992). Independent India continued such particularistic policies, granting a special position to the so‐called tribal Northeast Indian hill states (Vandekerckhove 2009, 53). However, the subsequent governments of Pakistan and Bangladesh (since 1971) moved towards inclusion of the tribal territories. In the Chittagong Hill Tracts this attempt of national inclusion resulted in a vicious war between indigenous insurgents and the state. -

Identity Politics and Social Exclusion in India’s North-East: The Case for Re-distributive Justice N.K.Das• Abstract: This paper examines how various brands of identity politics since the colonial days have served to create the basis of exclusion of groups, resulting in various forms of rifts, often envisaged in binary terms: majority-minority; sons of the soil’-immigrants; local-outsiders; tribal-non-tribal; hills-plains; inter-tribal; and intra-tribal. Given the strategic and sensitive border areas, low level of development, immense cultural diversity, and participatory democratic processes, social exclusion has resulted in perceptions of marginalization, deprivation, and identity losses, all adding to the strong basis of brands of separatist movements in the garb of regionalism, sub-nationalism, and ethnic politics, most often verging on extremism and secession. It is argued that local people’s anxiety for preservation of culture and language, often appearing as ‘narcissist self-awareness’, and their demand of autonomy, cannot be seen unilaterally as dysfunctional for a healthy civil society. Their aspirations should be seen rather as prerequisites for distributive justice, which no nation state can neglect. Colonial Impact and genesis of early ethnic consciousness: Northeast India is a politically vital and strategically vulnerable region of India. Surrounded by five countries, it is connected with the rest of India through a narrow, thirty-kilometre corridor. North-East India, then called Assam, is divided into Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Diversities in terms of Mongoloid ethnic origins, linguistic variation and religious pluralism characterise the region. This ethnic-linguistic-ecological historical heritage characterizes the pervasiveness of the ethnic populations and Tibeto-Burman languages in northeast. -

TERWIEL Recreating the Past Revivalism in Northeastern India Introduction In this article I would like to introduce the problems of reviving a ritual once it has disappeared without a trace, posing the modern actors an inter- esting set of dilemmas. The paper centres upon the example of the Ahom, an ethnic group in Northeast India which over the past centuries has lost trace almost completely of the culture of its Southeast Asian forebears. During the past fifteen years I have witnessed and personally played a minor, essentially indirect, role in the blossoming of a revivalist movement among the people of Ahom descent. It is a movement that has taken root in the face of what seem to be almost overwhelming odds. Tai-speaking peoples Tai-speaking peoples form the most numerous and most widely spread peoples in Mainland Southeast Asia. They first became recognizable as such in the first millennium A.D. in what is now Kuangsi Province in Southern China. In the middle of the eleventh century they became embroiled in a long and fierce war with the Chinese, which ended in a resounding defeat of the Tais. Hereupon many Tais suddenly began migrating southwards and south-westwards into the region of Mainland Southeast Asia. They fanned out rapidly, and within a few hundred years had conquered most of the valley regions where they are now found: in northern Vietnam, in Laos, in all of Thailand, in Northern Myanmar, in the Chinese province of Yunnan, and in Northeastern India. -

The north eastern region is comprises with eight states of north east part and Assam is its nerve centre. Tribal situation of Assam is in critical juncture because of different identity assertions of ethnic and tribal groups .Mishings are the second largest group of a scheduled tribes in Assam. They have their own distinctive identity. There are lots of basic causes of identity crisis of Mishings of Assam. This paper attempt to highlight the several issues of identity crisis among the Mishings in Assam in particular and the tribes of Assam in general. Keywords: Mishing, Ethnicity, Identity Introduction :- The North East India comprising the eight states (formerly seven sisters) of India‟s North Eastern part namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Sikkim are predominantly inhabited by the tribal people both in hills and plains areas. Assam is the nerve centre of North Eastern region of India. Tribes are spread all over the districts of Assam. In this state, more than two thirds of the tribes are living in plains. The Bodos and Mishing are numerically two strong tribes in the state of Assam. The tribal situation of Assam and North East India (NEI) are different from other parts of the country. -

Darjeeling Aug. 2018 ABSTRACT Indigenous knowledge has been used since ages by indigenous and local communities in Sikkim and has been the foundation of their existence specially in the key sectors of health. Western science has lately begun looking at Indigenous Knowledge as a basis of new drugs specially since the expenditure of putting new drugs on the market is sky-scraping. The budding phenomenon of bio-piracy makes it evident the somewhat hypocritical outlook of western science to Indigenous Knowledge. Scavenging it on the one hand and claiming patents on all kinds of goods derived from Indigenous Knowledge (neem, turmeric, etc) yet refusing to acknowledge its economic significance and ownership. Despite the growing recognition of Indigenous Knowledge as a valuable source of knowledge, Medico-spiritual healing practice in Sikkim is an acronym in terms of health care service that hardly needs to be expanded nowadays. Sikkim doctrines the indigenous spiritual practice, indigenous traditions related with religion and belief based healing treatment and is a natural centre of traditional healing practice. Medico-spiritual healers and occupational traditional healing therapy acts as alchemists. In this pristine virgin and scenic land of blooming orchids, the majority of the State population are directly dependent upon the traditional medications prescribed by the Medico-spiritual healers for their basic health services and facilities.
