The study used a qualitative approach that was guided by implementation literature. Fifteen participants (8 nursing students; 4 nursing faculty members; 3 nurses) answered open-ended questions and participated in semi-structured interviews. From the findings, three themes emerged to identify the current role of nurses in Saudi Arabian school: “Health educator”, “Health promoter”, and “Liaison with community”. Four themes were identified based on the potential role of nurses in Saudi Arabian schools: “Leadership role”, “Care provider role”, “Educator role”, and “Liaison with community”. Five themes were identified based on facilitators and barriers to providing health and physical education in Saudi schools: “University and college level support”, “School health services”, “Governmental support”, “Lack of cultural approval”, and “Demand for nurses exceeds supply”. This study contributes to our understanding of what are the current and potential roles of nurses in Saudi Arabian schools, are nursing students currently prepared to provide health education and promotion to school staff and students, and what facilitators and barriers exist for nursing to provide health education and promotion in Saudi schools. This information can contribute to decision-making processes, formulation of necessary legislation, and government measures towards the implementation of school nursing and physical education,     (1) Bahrain Medical Bulletin, Vol. 22, No. 3, September 2000 Obesity in Saudi Arabia Khalid A Madani, MPH, DSc∗ This paper highlights the current situation of obesity in Saudi Arabia. The prevalence of obesity ranged from 14% in children less than 6 years to about 83% in adults. Women were more prone to be overweight or obese than men. Several factors were reported to be associated with obesity in this country such as age, sex, socio-economic status, employment, education, and parity. More studies are needed to determine cultural influences in developing obesity. Strategy to prevent obesity in Saudi Arabia should include encouragement of physical activity, reduce intake of high fat foods and behaviour modification. Bahrain Med Bull 2000;22(3): It is well documented that obesity is associated with several chronic illnesses. Therefore, the prevalence of obesity in a population can be considered as a rough indicator for health status. Obesity is not an uncommon finding, particularly in affluent societies. In Saudi Arabia, obesity is becoming one of the most important public health problems1. The available data clearly indicate a high prevalence of adult obesity particularly in women in the Kingdom. This paper aims to briefly summarize the current state of knowledge about the prevalence of obesity, its predisposing factors, and its management in Saudi Arabia. This information is required for planning intervention programmes in nutrition and to offer new directions for improving the health of the people of Saudi Arabia.     The Investment Case for Noncommunicable Disease Prevention and Control in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Return on Investment & Institutional and Context Analysis June – July 2017 Abstract Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases and their risk factors are an increasing public health and economic challenge in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This report provides evidence through three analyses that NCDs reduce economic output and discusses potential options in response, outlining details of their relative returns on investment. An economic burden analysis shows that economic losses from NCDs are equivalent to 2.8% of gross domestic product. An intervention costing analysis provides an estimate of the funding required to implement a set of policy interventions for prevention and clinical interventions. A cost–benefit analysis compares these implementation costs with the estimated health gains and identifies which policy packages would give the greatest returns on investment. Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of overweight and obesity (Ow/Ob) in Saudi adolescents and to construct an ecological model of social determinants of Ow/Ob and evaluate current evidence of their effect on Saudi adolescents. Methods: A systematic review of literature reported up to 31/12/2018 on Ow/Ob and factors that can influence them in Saudi adolescents was conducted. Results: Fifty-one studies with n=97,666 adolescents (56.9% males) were reviewed. The prevalence of Ow/Ob started off high and continued to increase over time. Most of the 49 reviewed social determinants reports, from 19 studies, showed positive association between social determinants and Ow/Ob in Saudi adolescents. Conclusion: Adolescents’ Ow/Ob is a major public health problem in Saudi Arabia and is growing. It is a multidisciplinary study that combines fashion and consumer behaviour approaches in order to define and explain the collective sociocultural norms that underlie the patterns of women’s fashion and clothing consumption in Saudi Arabia. It applies a mixed-method approach as a strategy for data collection, with primary data gathered through observation, a face-to-face questionnaire completed by 654 respondents and interviews with local retailers and experts in the fashion market. The analysis of the empirical data revealed significant findings related to consumption patterns and the characteristics of the local market. It identified that there are two main systems that define fashion consumption in female Saudi society. Each system operates in a different social setting (public and female-only social settings) that requires communicating or establishing a specific value or a set of values to meet social expectations. The research findings also indicate the structure of the market and its operational system used to respond to consumer demands. In the light of these findings, theoretical models were developed to define the particularities of fashion consumption in Saudi Arabia as outcomes of this study. This study could have a substantial influence in academia as it provides a broader insight into fashion consumption behaviour in Saudi Arabia compared to that available in the existing literature.
