Phleum alpinum L. Alpine Cat’s-tail A scarce alpine grass with distinctive purplish flower heads, long bristly awns and short, broad and glabrous leaves. It is associated with base- rich flushes and mires, more rarely with rocky habitats, and occasionally with weakly acid substrates enriched by flushing with base-rich water. In Britain it is more or less confined to above 610 m northern and central Scotland with two southern outliers in the North Pennines. PHOTOGRAPHY CREDITS All photographs included in this report were taken by the authors. 1 INTRODUCTION This project, funded by the Nova Scotia Species at Risk Conservation Fund, focused on two areas of high potential for rare plant occurrence: 1) the Polletts Cove and Blair River system in northern Cape Breton, covered over eight AC CDC botanist field days; and 2) the lower, non-tidal 29 km and selected tidal portions of the LaHave River in Lunenburg County, covered over 12 AC CDC botanist field days. The Cape Breton Highlands support a diverse array of provincially rare plants, many with Arctic or western affinity, on cliffs, river shores, and mature deciduous forests in the deep ravines (especially those with more calcareous bedrock and/or soil) and on the peatlands and barrens of the highland plateau. Recent AC CDC fieldwork on Lockhart Brook, Big Southwest Brook and the North Aspy River sites similar to the Polletts Cove and Blair River valley was very successful, documenting 477 records of 52 provincially rare plant species in only five days of fieldwork. -

Rheum palmatum (Chinese Rhubarb, family Polygonaceae) is a significant medicinal herb, which finds an extensive use in Unani (Traditional) system of medicine. It has been traditionally employed as antiseptic, liver stimulant, diuretic, diabetes, stomachic, purgative/cathartic, anticholesterolemic, antitumor, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, tonic, antidiabetic, and wound healer. The most vital components from Rheum palmatum are the phenolics, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, and anthraquinone derivatives such as aloe- emodin, chrysophanol, physcion, rhein, emodin and its glucorhein, and glycoside. Rhubarb also contains tannins which include hydrolysable-tannins, containing glycosidic or ester bonds composed of glucose, gallic acid, and other monosaccharide’s and condensed tannins, resulting principally from the flavone derivatives leukocyanidin and catechin. In recent years, new components such asrevandchinone-1, revandchinone-2, revandchinone-3, revandchinone-4, sulfemodin8-O-b-Dglucoside, and 6-methyl-rhein and aloe-emodin have been reported from the same class. It also encompasses some macro and micro mineral elements such as Ca, K, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Na, Cu, and Li. Anthraquinone derivatives demonstrate evidence of anti- microbial, antifungal, anti-proliferative, anti-Parkinson’s, immune enhancing, anticancer, antiulcer, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. -
Rhubarb Rheum Rhabarbarum
Rhubarb Rheum rhabarbarum Rhubarb is an herbaceous, cool-weather perennial vegetable that grows from short, thick rhizomes. It produces large, triangular-shaped poisonous leaves, edible stalks and small flowers. The red-green stalks, which are similar to celery in texture, have a tart taste and are used in pies, preserves, and sauces. The leaves contain the toxic substance oxalic acid, a nephrotoxic which is damaging to the kidneys and may be fatal in large amounts but generally causes shortness of breath, burning sensations in the mouth and throat, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, and edema. If the leaves have been ingested do not induce vomiting but call the Poison Control Hotline. Oxalic acid will migrate from the leaves to the stalks of plants that have been exposed to freezing conditions, therefore those stalks should not be consumed. Soil Requirements Rhubarb has a wide range of acceptable pH, from 5.0-6.8 which makes it well-suited for a Connecticut garden. Have a soil test done through the UConn Soil & Nutrient Analysis Lab and follow the recommendations a year before planting if possible. Amending the soil with aged manure or well-rotted compost will increase plant production. Location Selection & Planting Rhubarb should be planted in an area with full sun or light shade where it will be out of the way, at one end or side of the garden, as it will remain productive for 5 or more years. They should be planted in an area with good drainage or in raised beds. Rhubarb roots may be planted or divided in the early spring while they are still dormant. -

Stems: cylindric, to 10 mm diameter, fused bases of upper cauline leaves forming ledges across each node, somewhat woody; hollow, pith wide. Leaves: opposite decussate, simple, petiolate (lower leaves) and sessile (upper leaves), without stipules; petiole channeled, to 40 mm long, somewhat indistinct from blade, expanded at base; blade elliptic or lanceolate (typical cauline leaves) to ovate (cauline leaves subtending reproductive shoots), 30–200 × 20–70 mm, reduced on lateral branches, long-tapered at base, entire, acuminate (typical leaves) to tail-like (caudate, cauline leaves) at tip, pinnately veined with midrib raised on lower surface, bluish green. Inflorescence: panicle of cymes (thyrse), terminal (axillary), domed, 35−70 mm across, with 2 or more orders of opposite decussate lateral branching and many flowers in a somewhat dense cluster, the second and third order forks with a terminal flower, ultimate branchlets somewhat 1-sided, bracteate, essentially glabrous; central axis with several−10 nodes; bracts at the lowest node 2 (= 1 subtending each main branch), bases fused across node, leaflike, ovate, 3−4 mm long, midvein slightly raised on lower surface; first internode 10+ mm long, decreasing upward; bracts subtending lateral branches and larger branchlets oblong or narrowly triangular to narrowly spatulate, 1−3 mm long, bases fused across node, with some short glandular hairs on margins; bractlet subtending flower awl-shaped, 1−2 mm long increasing in fruit, usually abscised before fruit matures; pedicel absent. -

Swing Through
Swing Through 20m Swing Through is an interactive agility garden that connects the user to Canada’s diverse landscape, as well as its major economic industry. The garden is a series of thirteen finished lumber posts that dangle from a large steel structure, creating “tree swings”. On the swings are climbing holds where visitors can use the holds to climb up and across the tree swings. Directly under the tree swings are thirteen colour-coordinated stumps that give the user an extra boost, if needed. The thirteen timber tree swings represent Canada’s ten provinces and three territories by using wood from the official provincial and territorial trees. Surrounding this structure of Canadian trees is a garden divided into thirteen sections displaying the native plants of each province and territory.
