On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. -

WRS Journal 13:2 (August 2006) 26-43 PRESBYTERIANISM IN AMERICA The 20th Century John A. Battle The final third century of Presbyterianism in America has witnessed the collapse of the mainline Presbyterian churches into liberalism and decline, the emergence of a number of smaller, conservative denominations and agencies, and a renewed interest in Reformed theology throughout the evangelical world. The history of Presbyterianism in the twentieth century is very complex, with certain themes running through the entire century along with new and radical developments. Looking back over the last hundred years from a biblical perspective, one can see three major periods, characterized by different stages of development or decline. The entire period begins with the Presbyterian Church being overwhelmingly conservative, and united theologically, and ends with the same church being largely liberal and fragmented, with several conservative defections. I have chosen two dates during the century as marking these watershed changes in the Presbyterian Church: (1) the issuing of the 1934 mandate requiring J. Gresham Machen and others to support the church’s official Board of Foreign Missions, and (2) the adoption of the Confession of 1967. The Presbyterian Church moves to a new gospel (1900-1934) At the beginning of the century When the twentieth century opened, the Presbyterians in America were largely contained in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (PCUSA, the Northern church) and the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS, the Southern church). There were a few smaller Presbyterian denominations, such as the pro-Arminian Cumberland Presbyterian Church and several Scottish Presbyterian bodies, including the United Presbyterian Church of North America and various other branches of the older Associate and Reformed Presbyteries and Synods. -

Chautauqua Institution is a beautiful lakeside Victorian village/campus located in the southwestern corner of New York State. During its summer season, Chautauqua is the site of intellectual and cultural programming, study, performance and recreation of all types. Many prominent Americans and others in every field of endeavor have appeared before Chautauqua’s special audiences in its gorgeous venues. Robert H. Jackson’s connections to Chautauqua Institution were many faceted. It is located very near Jamestown, New York, which was Jackson’s hometown from late boyhood forward. For almost fifty years, Chautauqua was a major part of Jackson’s expanding horizons, intellectual development, study and leisure—it was one of the places he loved best, and it deserves much credit for making him what he became (as he does for advancing it). Robert Jackson was attending Chautauqua Institution programs at least by 1907 (age 15), when he got to spend much of a day there in the group that was hosting speaker William Jennings Bryan. Jackson began his own Chautauqua speaking career at least by 1917, when he was 24. In 1936, Jackson was at President Franklin Roosevelt’s side when he delivered at Chautauqua his famous “I Hate War” speech. Jackson’s own Chautauqua platform appearances included his highly-publicized July 4, 1947, speech about the just-completed Nuremberg trial and its teachings, including about the prospects for world peace in that time of spreading cold war and global tension. Otto Nall * N OBSERVER trying to describe his first visit to a youth as- sembly, with its classes, morning watch, campfire service, stunt night, and treasure hunt, said, "It's a combination of college, circus and camp meeting." Today's summer assembly demands a different figure of speech. The assembly owes much to two factors in history-the camp meet- ing and the chautauqua. Some of the best characteristics of both have survived in the assembly, even though more than 100 oamp meetings are still drlawing crowds and the year's program at Lake Chautauqua, New York is as well filled as ever. The camp meeting movement thlat flourished in frontier days has been misunderstood. In the early stages, these meetings were bois- terous; they were often accompanied by disorderliness, irregular- ities, and hysteria. But within a few years camp meetings became wlell planned and orderly institutions. Charles A. Johnson, writing on "The Frontier Camp Meeting" in The Mississippi Valley His- torical Review, says: "On successive frontiers it passed through a boisterous youth, characterized by a lack of planning, extreme disorder, high-tension emotionalism, bodily excitement, and some immorality; it then moved to a more formalized stage distinguished by its planning, more effective audience management, and notable decline in excess- ive emotionalism. In this institutional phase thle meetings were smaller in size, and highly systematized as to frequency, length, pro- cedure of service, and location." Some of the emotionalism was no doubt due to the conditions of frontier living-the caprices of the weather, the danger of attacks by unfriendly Indians, the scourge of starvation, the threat of illness without benefit of medic'al aid, and sheer loneliness. -

This project seeks to reframe the conventional arguments surrounding the trial, treating it instead as a significant religious event, one which not only altered the course of Christian Fundamentalism and the Creationist movement, but also perpetuated Southern religious stereotypes through the intense, and largely negative, nationwide publicity it attracted. Prosecutor William Jennings Bryan's crucial role is also redefined, with his denial of a strictly literal interpretation of Genesis during the trial serving as the impetus for the shift toward ultra- conservatism and young-earth Creationism within the movement after 1925. -

INTRODUCTION It is difficult to overstate William Bell Riley's importance to the early fundamentalist movement; it is well-nigh impossible to exaggerate his prodigious energy. In the years between the world wars, when he was in his 60s and 70s and pastor of a church with thousands of members, Riley founded and directed the first inter denominational organization of fundamentalists, served as an active leader of the fundamentalist faction in the Northern Bap tist Convention, edited a variety of fundamentalist periodicals, wrote innumerable books and articles and pamphlets (including, in the less-polemical vein, a forty-volume exposition ofthe entire Bible), presided over a fundamentalist Bible school and its ex panding network of churches, and masterminded a fundamental ist takeover of the Minnesota Baptist Convention. Besides all this, in these years William Bell Riley also established himself as one ofthe leading antievolutionists in America. -

Butler Contributing Editor Notable Trade Book Lesson Plan Monkey Town: The Summer of the Scopes Trial by Ronald Kidd Michael G. Lovorn The University of Alabama State of Tennessee v. John T. Scopes tested the legality of the Butler Act which made it unlawful for public school teachers “to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible.” The media event became known as the “Monkey Trial” and brought a flood of publicity to rural Dayton, Tennessee, turning the creation vs. evolution debate into a national conversation. This dialog and debate caused Americans to consider the powerful influence of traditional religious beliefs and to examine how ideology fares when challenged by modernism and the advancement of scientific theory. Accordingly, the Scopes Trail is included in national curriculum standards for middle grades to foster historical inquiry and encourage students’ contemplation of concepts and factors associated with human thinking, feeling, and behavior. The historical fiction in Monkey Town presents the trial and related hysteria through the observations of a 15-year-old local girl trying to discover what she believes. This lesson encourages learners to critically analyze the relationships between ideas and practices. It enables students’ cursory exploration into issues and conflicts, allowing them to develop discussion and critical thinking skills by considering different perspectives in a historical setting. Book Reviews theories about language and the power of scripture as the Word of God in a modern context, liberal evangelicals’ commitment to social reform as an expression of piety and an outgrowth of Christian conversion, the liberal evangelical curriculum at the Union School of Religion and its struggle ðand ultimate failureÞ to maintain a distinct evangelical identity, the emergence of a prophetic and confrontational fundamentalist style in New York City as exemplified by the ministry and public preaching of John Roach Straton, and a concluding chapter on Harry Emerson Fosdick’s doomed efforts to maintain a robust form of liberal evangelicalism at Riverside Church. It is hard not to read this book as a declension narrative, despite Bowman’s assertion that liberal evangelicals did not capitulate to modernity or did not see themselves as “selling out” to a secular culture. Almost all of the figures he looks at or the liberal attempts to combine a prophetic commitment to social reform, a priestly emphasis on pastoral work, and personal spiritual conversion and growth end in disappointment or failure or a loss of a distinctive evangelical identity, which they had sought so assiduously to retain. So rather than demonstrating that evan- gelicalism is robust when it imagines itself diverse, Bowman’s work instead demon- strates the difficulty liberals encountered who wanted to maintain an evangelical identity and how hard it was to occupy a treacherous middle ground. That seems to be the fate of liberal evangelicalism narrated in this very important if not quite per- suasive book. CURTIS EVANS, University of Chicago.
