How to Succeed like Sachin Tendulkar. Every human being born on this planet possesses distinct characteristics. These characteristics can either be good or bad. The good ones h. 5 Leadership traits we can learn from Sachin Tendulkar. Recently, I read - " Playing It My Way ", the autobiography of Sachin Tendulkar, the legendary Indian cricketer. The game of cricket can be safely assumed as a religion in India for the absolute craze and love for the sport in the country. Sachin Tendulkar is hailed as the “ God of Cricket ”. It is said that, " God wanted to play cricket and He was born as Sachin Tendulkar "- such is the legendary of this great cricketer. Sachin Tendulkar comes from a humble background; he madly loved the sport of cricket from an early age of five. He lived and breathed cricket. When he retired in November-2013, after playing international cricket for 24 long years, he had scored a record of 100 centuries (a century is scoring 100 runs or more in an inning). Also, he holds the world record of scoring the highest runs in the history of world cricket. What are the traits and habits that helped Sachin Tendulkar to achieve such iconic success? 1. Discipline and Dedication. Sachin Tendulkar started playing cricket from a very early age. Looking at his immense love for the game, Ajit - his brother, put him in a cricket coaching school under Ramakant Achrekar - the legendary coach. Every day, Sachin used to get up very early in the morning, travelled on crowded buses and trains. He used to practice in the morning before the school and again practiced in the evening after the school. The journey, four times a day, especially after changing multiple buses for a young boy of eleven year old was quite exhausting. As a 14 year old boy, he played 55 games without a break. He practiced for 2 hours, then played a game and then again practiced for 2 hours, before falling asleep on dining table - for 55 days continuously. The same work ethics continued even after getting selected to play international cricket for team India. Most of the times, throughout his career, he used to be the first one to turn up in the gym or ground for practice. He scored his 100th century and still turned up for practice next day morning. , a close childhood friend of Sachin, had got into playing for India, couple of years after Sachin was picked for Indian team. Vinod was quite a sensation in the beginning of his career but soon to be faded away to oblivion. He had once remarked that, “ Sachin took the elevator and I took stairs (to reach the same point in career) ”. But as a matter of fact it was Sachin who took the stairs. After all, there is no elevator to success but only stairs . 2. Brutal Focus. The cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan is legendary obviously because of the prevailing political tensions and love for the game in both the countries. In the cricket world cup (which is played once in four years), India has always beaten Pakistan so far and Sachin Tendulkar has played stellar match-winning roles in each of these matches. Who can forget the slicing upper cut sixer (six runs) he hit Sohaib Akhtar, the fiery fast Pakistani bowler, at Durban in 2003 edition of the world cup? Before the matches, sometimes even two months before a match with Pakistan, Sachin used to imagine and visualize the game in his mind. He clearly visualized how the fiery Pakistani fast bowlers were fuming and running to bowl at the top of their pace, firing at him in all cylinders. He imagined how he was preparing and playing his shots against each of these Pakistani bowlers. When he went to play in actual matches, his mind was so focused that he played those bowlers exactly like how he had thought and prepared in his mind. After all, he had practiced playing these bowlers again and again - in his mind! Sri Sri Ravishankar, the spiritual guru says, “ A torch sheds dim light, and does nothing more. If the same light is concentrated to a very high degree, it becomes a laser beam, which can cut the hardest metal. A dissipated and unfocussed mind cannot achieve anything. A focused mind can move the world ”. 3. Passion. When Sachin Tendulkar was getting coached under the able guidance of Ramakant Acherekar, there used to be matches between local teams in the famous of . Ramakant wanted to give Sachin maximum match-practices in varying conditions; so Sachin used to hop from one ground to another sitting on the back of his coach’s a scooter. In the evening, when he was back to his aunty’s home (he started staying with his uncle and aunty to avoid the daily long hour of commutation between his home and school), he would start practicing at home. His aunty threw a broken oval shaped golf ball from her sitting chair in the living room; the ball would turn unexpectedly and he would practice playing the turning ball with soft-handle style. This used to go on for hours. In one incidence, Sachin was not keeping well and having loose motion; in spite of that he kept batting to ensure his team's win. When he was selected for India cricket team, even after landing at the mid-night from a long and gruelling international tour, he used to turn up for playing matches for the local teams next morning. Before a shoulder surgery, he kept telling the doctors to ensure that he should be fit in time for the next series. He was sedated before being moved to the operating theatre, but for some reason he suddenly woke up on the trolley and asked the nurse if the operation was over! As Steve Job says, “ The only way to do great work is love what you do ”. And Sachin absolutely loved what he was doing. 4. Never Never Never Give up. Sachin was selected to play for India at the age of 16 and debuted against Pakistan for a 4 match test series in Pakistan in 1989. He was "all-at- sea" in the first inning of a test match, as he figured out that the standard of international cricket was higher than he had thought. In the fourth and final test match at Sialkot, India was in a precarious situation as it had quickly lost its experienced top order batsmen. Tendulkar needed to bat to save the match. In one of the fast bouncers from Waqar Younis, the Pakistani fast bowler, he was hit on his nose. His vision blurred, head felt heavy and it was blood all around. Everyone expected him to retire hurt and go back to the dressing room. But in his inimitable squeaky voice, he said, “ Main Khelega (I will play) ”. He scored an important 57 runs to save the match and denied victory for the opposition. While playing at the best of his career, he suffered first serious injury - a back problem which took more than eight months to recover in 1999. Subsequently, he suffered a foot injury in 2002. A serious tennis elbow in 2004 made it look like his career was over. But he never gave up. Through his strong desire to keep playing, he overcame all injuries to continue to play for the next nine years. For Sachin Tendulkar, giving up was simply not an option . 5. Playing It My Way. In twenty four years of his cricket career, Sachin Tendulkar played the gentle men’s game of cricket with pride, dignity and integrity. He always put his country and team first. There were no controversies on or off the field. Many times, he was handed bad umpiring decisions in crucial time of matches; he never questioned the decisions and simply walked back to the pavilion. He never argued with opposition players. He always carried himself with humility and simplicity; no wonder he is so madly adored by not only Indians but cricket lovers all around the world. This was his brand and his way of playing the sport. There is no surprise that his autobiography is named as “Playing It My Way”. “ Do not allow success to breed arrogance in you. If you remain humble, people will give you love and respect even after you have finished with the game. As a parent, I would be happier hearing people say, "Sachin is a good human being" than "Sachin is a great cricketer" any day." - These words Sachin often heard from his father while growing up, summarizes his life's philosophy and success. ------//--Note of Thanks: Thanks for reading the blog post. Here's the master blaster's guide to navigating through life and work. If there's one person who has mastered his way through, both, the pitch and life, it's the God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. Whether a cricket-buff or not, ask anyone about the Master Blaster, and they'd tell you that he could have them glued to their screens. Not just on the pitch, Tendulkar has been an inspiration off it too. The cricket legend who recently turned 44, is still trying new things from a singing debut to starring in the docu-drama based on his life. He recently took to LinkedIn to pen down five strategies that helped him in his life and career. And that post already has 760 likes, 31 comments, and 11 shares (and counting). Here's hoping we, too, can learn and live like him: Lesson 1: Leave your ego at the door Now, this is one that will take you places not just professionally but also personally. As Tendulkar puts it, "there'll always be moments of provocation in any competitive field. The important thing is to take only what helps you move toward your goal and leave the rest." Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar (L) receives 'Bharat Ratna' award from then-President Pranab Mukherjee. (Image: BCCL) Emphasising on the need to not let your ego come in the way, he adds, "ego stops you from doing the right things, and drives you to do the wrong things." And if we could follow this in cricket, shouldn't be too difficult for the rest of us. Lesson 2: Don't dwell Had a bad day at work? It's the most normal thing, happens even to the best of us. It's human to feel terrible about it, but holding on to that feeling day after day will only pull you down. "I made it a habit over the years to avoid reliving my failures, and just focussed on and worked towards my goals. Dwelling never figured in that equation." Mukesh Ambani and son Aakash with the batsman. (Image: BCCL) In short, it's okay to be upset but learn to let go. Lesson 3: Listen to yourself. Free advice is as common as oxygen! People, from your field or not, will always want to tell you how to do a job better, or how you should've done something in a different manner. The key is to hear everyone out, but listen to yourself. At the end the decision should be yours. Lesson 4: Look for strong partnerships Bonds matter! Be it a partnership in love, friendship, or work, it's important to recognise what relationships work for you. Saurav Ganguly (left) with Tendulkar. (Image: BCCL) As Tendulkar put it, "In cricket, many make the mistake of only considering batting partnerships as important. But I believe that bowling partnerships have equal merit. There's nothing more fascinating to watch than two human beings embarking on a common goal and working together to take their place as part of a bigger dream … a team, a nation." So, find the partnerships that work for you, and nurture them. Lesson 5: Don't be afraid to ask for help Tendulkar's final learning is of utmost importance. Always know that people who love you, your family and friends, will always be there for you. You just need to reach out to them. Sachin Tendulkar with daughter, Sarah. (Image: BCCL) Talking about his journey, he said, "Many careers don't involve physical injury. Mine, being a sporting career, had plenty of them. But whether the injury is physical, mental or emotional in one's career, it is important to remember that we are not out there alone." Celebrate the good times and heal from the tough ones, together. No one could've summed how to live life in five points better. So do this much for yourself, and learn a little from the man who goes beyond cricket. INSIGHT. Take any field, any place in the world,Quality stands Foremost. If you can deliver High Quality persistently and consistently,no force on this planet can beat you. On the other side,if you compromise on Quality, you can be challanged and even defeated in a matter of no time. Just think, what has made MERCEDEZ-BENZ,BMW,FORD,HONDA,TOYOTA super brands ? Their constant striving for Higher Quality all the time. They have huge QC departments (quality control departments) working tirelessly to achieve and maintain the highest possible quality in the auto industry. The reason why they have become Trendsetters in their field is,they are just so precise about their Quality. They check each and every nut and bolt fitted in their new vehicles for the perfect adherence to company's quality norms and if they find that something is not according to standards, they just don't put it for sale. There are no compromises whatsoever on the Quality front. Not only the corporate sector, one may find examples of achievement and adherence to quality in sports, entertainment, education, computers, literally every field, where Quality has played a pivotal role in achievement of enduring success. Take for example Indian cricketer/batsman . When he started his career against England at Lords in 1996,who would have thought that he would achieve such huge milestones as what he has achieved so far ( 13000 test runs being just after sachin tendulkar ) . Everyone knew about Sachin that he was very talented and was most likely to be one of the best, but what about Dravid ? When he was new, he was considered good but not the best (so many fans rated him much below Saurav Ganguly, who could only amass 7100 odd runs as compared to Dravid's 13000 !) At 38,Dravid still practises for 4 hours a day, each day of the year to maintain his own high quality standards. His excellent cover drives and ground shots around the park, illustrate his supreme ability to convert those not-so-bad deliveries into ordinary ones.At 13000 test runs ( and still counting ) he is now considered as a legendary batsman even ahead of the greats like Brian Lara,Sunny Gavaskar and Steven Waugh. In the entertainment industry, one may take the example of AamirKhan. He is not nicknamed Mr.Perfect just like that. Before shooting for any scene in his home production films, he visualizes the scene and then tries to make the exact background and getover as what he had visualized earlier on. He never compromises on the quality of his background location, makeup of stars, the overall atmosphere, music ..almost all the aspects which are necessary to make the scene interesting and worth enjoying !! Sometimes he becomes the villager of "Lagaan" ,sometimes the frolicsome teacher of "Tare Zameen Par" and sometimes he becomes the collegian of "3 Idiots".In all his Avatars, you feel that he is exactly the one whom he tried to portray. He tries to give 100 percent to his films and so far he has succeeded in giving the Ultimate in Quality. I would like to call him the Steven Spielberg of the Hindi Film Industry ( although some of you may have a different opinion ! ) After taking those examples, the question that naturally comes to my mind is -- How to achieve and then maintain such high Quality standards for a longer duration of time ? What are the parameters which need to be set forth and then vigorously followed to achieve the highest possible quality ? What are the standards of discipline, hardwork and patience necessary to be maintained to achieve desirable levels of quality ? The answer to all these questions, will be examined thoroughly in my next blog, which will come out shortly. Thanks for reading. Thursday, October 13, 2011. Patriotism. Yesterday,Prashant Bhushan,a member of Team Anna was beaten up for making comments about Kashmir. He said he was in favour of a Referendum in Kashmir,in which the people of Kashmir should be given the right to decide whether Kashmir should be an independant nation or remain as an integral part of India.Undoubtedly such highly liberalized remarks would provoke the rightists, who think that India can and should never be divided further. So some young people rushed inside the office of Prashant Bhushan and bashed him up for his unscrupulous and antinational remarks. The question here is of propriety. Did Prashant Bhushan say the right thing when he commented about the freedom of Kashmir ? Should he be excused for making such remarks under the pretext that he has the freedom of speech, living in a democracy like India ? Or should he be punished ? If at all, he should be punished or opposed,is this the right way to oppose him - by beating him badly ? Evidently, he went completely wrong when he was saying that the Youth of Kashmir deserved a Referendum on what should be the future of Kashmir. After so much of bloodshed of innocent men and women in Kashmir, and after the immigration of almost all the Hindus from Kashmir,we can't let it to be hived off from the rest of the nation, only because some seperatists over there want it to be a seperate identity. Every true Indian will like to see Kashmir , being a part of India Forever. Everything has its own limit, however.Freedom of speech isn't granted to us,so that we keep on commenting thoughtlessly (giving your thoughts the name "Liberalized views")about sensitive issues, which can stir someone up.You should think twice before you make a Public statement about a burning issue like Kashmir.Just because, you were supported by the Public as heroes during your campaign against corruption, especially due to Anna Hazare, doesnt give you the authority to speak about burning and sensitive national issues relentlessly. It was a clear case of Misuse of the fundamental right of Freedom of speech. He deserved opposition from anywhere and everywhere. However, the punishment dished out to him was also improper. If you donot like a person's comments you can oppose him verbally by arguing with him or at the best shout slogans against him in protest. But you can't use Violence to thrash him for what he spoke. This is called Hooliganism, which cannot be endorsed in a civilized society. Inshort, patriotism cannot be showed by beating someone up just because his views were anti-national.There are far better ways to show your Patriotism, rather than this one. Such events make the nation's pride to descend. Tuesday, October 11, 2011. Reasons for Success. One student asked me yesterday," Sir,why do some people succeed in life, while so many of them Fail ?" The answer to it from my side - "Total dedication, perseverance and patience combined with Discipline." If you possess all of these qualities, you are very likely to succeed in a huge way.Presence of even one of the above will help you a lot in proceeding towards your desired Goal.Dedication is your commitment towards your work in terms of achieving the targets as per schedule. Perseverance is Hardwork.Total ruthless Hardwork. Then comes Patience. Its a low profile virtue, but its an essential supplement to the above two virtues. Without Patience, one can't achieve Longterm Success. To attain success is less difficult. To maintain it for a long term is much more difficult. This comes through a sheer quality called patience. Its that inner voice inside you, which keeps on telling you," Mate, today wasn't my day but i will again try harder tomorrow . ".Patience can be enhanced through Pranayam and Meditation. Last but not the least is Discipline. To understand what Discipline is and how it contributes in our success, lets take the example of two cricketers. Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli started their cricketing careers almost together in early nineties.Initially, although Sachin was more talented,Vinod was more successful !! When he hit 4 centuries in a row, people started comparing him to Sir Don Bradman !Two of those centuries he converted into Double hundreds ! Whilst Kambli was in full bloom, Sachin wasn't.He hardly hit a Fifty in those four test matches in which Kambli flourished. But he was more Disciplined and believed in himself. Slowly Kambli started moving in late night parties and got back to the hotel room late quite often. This had an impact on his batting form. While Sachin was very disciplined. He never went to late night parties and went to bed early.Kambli, inspite of losing his touch, continued to remain astray and decided to work in some films as his sidejob ! Sachin was fully focussed on Cricket. The result is history.Vinod Kambli was finally kicked out of the Indian cricket team due to his deteriorating form and now he sits in the benches to watch Sachin still playing for India after 22 years and creating newer records all the time . As on today, Sachin is considered as a Legend while Kambli is a forgotten saga ! The main difference between the two is DISCIPLINE.One never knew what it means, while the other worshipped it and obeyed it fully. If described at length, the above four virtues can fill up bytes and bytes of data. Each word is so precious for the person, who can rightly evaluate it.However,I think this much is enough for today. Good night and Take care. Monday, October 10, 2011. INSIGHT. Date- 10th October,2011. It was a fulfilling day with respect to my work with a lot of energy and zeal. In the process of my daily routine,I happened to watch an online video containing the 1st episode of a 13-episode TV series "COSMOS" by Carl Sagan. It was named as "The shores of the Cosmic Ocean". I was highly impressed once again to see it.( once again because I had seen it way back in 1987 as a student of class 12th ) " Why would a very moderate bluish planet like our Earth be the only place to have Life on it, when billions of planets and celestial bodies carry almost every essential elements necessary to produce and sustain Life ?" asks Sagan in the middle of this very vivid and highly informative episode. "I personally believe that there is no reason why Life wouldn't be there in plenty, somewhere amongst the large amount of satellites and planets up there." he concludes his argument. Infact this very question of the existence of Living identities somewhere on some planet or a satellite ( or even a meteor )has been puzzling the scientists since decades now. There was a probability of the presence of Life on Mars, but with the proof that there is no water on it as on today, that possibility has been denied temporarily. Scientists have now been considering the case of possibility of life on anyone of the 39 moons of Jupiter or that on 30 of Saturn. That day on which they find Life on any of these natural satellites, would definitely be a Milestone in Space Research. Its amazing to know that the matter by which the stars are made up of, is exactly the same in which the Sun and our planets are made up of viz.Hydrogen,Helium,carbon,etc.Carbon,Hydrogen and Oxygen constitute organic molecules of which protein and DNA chain is made up of in almost each living body. Thus we can invariably state that we are made up of STAR MATTER . Also there exists an amazing analogy between the Rotation of planets around the Sun (the biggest phenomenon in the solar system) and the Rotation of electrons around the Nucleus of an atom ( the smallest phenomenon in our solar system). Both rotate in the same way and the same principles of physics apply to both of them . Really surprising, isn't it ? One student asked me today," Sir,why do some people succeed in life, while so many of them Fail ?" The answer to it from my side - "Total dedication, perseverance and patience combined with Discipline" Will talk about it tomorrow when I resume typing. Good Night for today. Saturday, October 1, 2011. Introduction. During our daily chores, we experience and feel a variety of emotions. Some subside down immediately, while some of them continue to hover over our nervous system (including brain ), until you don't actually firmly decide to give them up. Some thoughts and emotions, would be those which reflect your inborne tendency to perceive yourself as a superior identity on this planet wherever you go ,while contrastingly some show your negative feelings, which relect your hidden fears and apprehensions. The more you succeed in suppressing the negative thoughts and energies and divert them into positive ones, the more you succeed in this modern sphere of life. This blog attempts at the same process of first showing what went through my mind during the time when negative energies travelled all around me and then how much I succeeded in re-establishing the positive atmosphere by myself or by any other aid, around me.
