A torpedo slams into the side of our ship, flinging me out of my bunk. The ship is transporting thousands of troops and hundreds of nurses. It is December 1942, and our country is at war. I am Margaret Bourke-White, the only woman photographer covering this war. The U.S. Army Air Forces has handed me a plum assignment: photographing an Allied attack on the Germans. I wanted to fly in one of our B-17 bombers, but the top brass ordered me to travel instead in the flagship of a huge convoy, headed from England through the Straits of Gibraltar towards the coast of North Africa. It would be safer than flying, the officers argued. As it turns out, they were dead wrong. Beneath the surface of the Mediterranean, German submarines glide, silent and lethal, stalking their prey. One of their torpedoes has found its mark. I grab my camera bag and one camera, leaving everything else behind, and race to the bridge. I hear the order blare: Abandon ship! Abandon ship! There is not enough light and not enough time to take photographs. I head for Lifeboat No. 12 and board with the others assigned to it, mostly nurses. We’ve drilled for it over and over, but this is not a drill. -

Transcript: Song & Music in the Movement A Conversation with Candie Carawan, Charles Cobb, Bettie Mae Fikes, Worth Long, Charles Neblett, and Hollis Watkins, September 19 – 20, 2017. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Song_2017.09.19_01TASCAM Charlie Cobb: [00:41] So the recorders are on and the levels are okay. Okay. This is a fairly simple process here and informal. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing. -

Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. The interview was conducted by Milton Brown for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview Tape 1, side A MILTON BROWN: This is an interview with Raphael Soyer with Milton Brown interviewing. Raphael, we’ve known each other for a very long time, and over the years you have written a great deal about your life, and I know you’ve given many interviews. I’m doing this especially because the Archives wants a kind of update. It likes to have important American artists interviewed at intervals, so that as time goes by we keep talking to America’s famous artists over the years. I don’t know that we’ll dig anything new out of your past, but let’s begin at the beginning. See if we can skim over the early years abroad and coming here in general. I’d just like you to reminisce about your early years, your birth, and how you came here. RAPHAEL SOYER: Well, of course I was born in Russia, in the Czarist Russia, and I came here in 1912 when I was twelve years old. -

Catherine Francis THE COFFEE CUP SONG "How dare you!" my momma says, her voice high and screeching like a lonely fiddle. "How dare you!" She throws one two three four five coffee cups at me. Percussion smash. Tinkle of white shards on the blue linoleum. We'll be drinking coffee out of styrofoam for a while, I think. That's all we have, coffee cup-wise, except for the sixth one, the last thing my daddy drank out of the morning he left, and it's sitting in the china cabi net in the front room. She doesn't aim to hit me, although the fifth cup comes ,close. It explodes on the floor and a chip dings off my guitar's gloss. She's never thrown anything at me before. I watch the way you might watch a television program showing animals doing some thing you've never seen them do. "How dare you!" my mother says again. She sinks down in her chair and puts her head in her hands. Her words are muffled as they make their way past the blue sleeves of her workshirt, the one with "Candy" embroidered in red loops on the front pocket. "How dare you put me in that song?" I don't answer. She'll cry for a while, and then she'll sweep up the pieces, wipe her face with a cool rag, and go to work at the Krave-More Diner, where you can get the finest cup of coffee in this town or any other. I put my guitar in its case, go out the screen door, and head out down the road, raising puffs of red dust puffs around my heels.
