"Grammaticality Judgment"
Prosodic Influence on Syntactic Judgments * Yoshihisa Kitagawa and Janet Dean Fodor Indiana University Graduate Center, CUNY We argue for the importance of controlling prosody in soliciting syntactic judgments. Through the analyses of a variety of complex Wh-constructions in Japanese, we first attempt to reveal that a construction which requires a non-default prosody is vulnerable to misjudgments of syntactic well- formedness when it is presented to the subjects in writing. We then report on our pilot experiments on the comparison of grammaticality judgments of written and spoken sentences in both English and Japanese, which supports our claim. Keywords: implicit prosody, default prosody, parsing, Wh-questions in Japanese, long-distance scrambling, 1. Introduction It appears that there is a rebellion in the making, against the intuitive judgments of syntacticians as a privileged database for the development of syntactic theory. Such intuitions may be deemed inadequate because they are not sufficiently representative of the language community at large. The judgments are generally few and not statistically validated, and they are made by sophisticated people who are not at all typical users of the language. Linguists are attuned to subtle syntactic distinctions, about which they have theories. However, our concern in this paper is with the opposite problem: that even the most sophisticated judges may occasionally miss a theoretically significant fact about well- formedness. In the 1970‟s it was observed that in order to make a judgment of syntactic well- formedness one must sometimes be creative. It was noted that some sentences, such as (1), are perfectly acceptable in a suitable discourse context, and completely unacceptable otherwise (e.g., as the initial sentence of a conversation; see Morgan (1973). -

A member of X-Japan in France ! Ra :IN in Paris the 5th of May 2005 Gfdgfd We have the pleasure to announce that the solo band of PATA (ex-X-Japan), Ra :IN, will perform live at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris (France) the 5th of May 2005. " Ra:IN " (pronounced "rah'een")----is an amazing unique, powerful new rock trio consisting of PATA (guitar-Tomoaki Ishizuka), one of the guitarists from the legendary Japanese rock band X Japan, michiaki (bass-Michiaki Suzuki), originally from another legendary Yokohama based rock band TENSAW, and Tetsu Mukaiyama (drums), who supported various bands and musicians such as Red Warriors and CoCCo. " Ra:IN " 's uniqueness comes from its musical eloquence. The three-piece band mainly delves into instrumental works, and the band's combination of colorful tones and sounds, along with the tight playing only possible with top-notch skilled players, provides an overwhelming power and energy that is what " ROCK " is all about. Just cool and heavy rhythms. But above all, don’t miss the first opportunity to see on stage in Europe a member of X-Japan, PATA (one of the last still performing). One of those that with their music, during years, warmed the heart of millions of fans in Japan and across the world. Ringo Starr Actuarà Per Primera Vegada En Solitari a Barcelona Aquest Dimarts El Bateria De the Beatles Ho Farà En El Marc Del Guitar BCN 2018

Iron Curtains and Satin Sheets: "Strange Loves" in Cold War Popular Music Russell Reising Cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" Many Americans know of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a tiny, grandmotherly woman with a heavy Germanic accent who, throughout the 1980s, dispensed love and sex advice to American television and radio audiences, often in shockingly, or at least titillatingly, graphic physical detail and frank language. A different doctor, one who also spoke in Germanically accented English, however, was in residence as the popular culture love and sex guru during the height of the Cold War. Stanley Kubrick's fictional Dr. Strangelove, the ex-Nazi defense theorist who stifled "Heil Hitler" salutes as he planned post-World War III orgies, lingers as a haunting reminder of the toll wreaked on human love and intimacy by the emotional terrors of the Cold War and its threat of instant nuclear obliteration. Even the resourceful Dr. Ruth would have a hard time offering advice to the Chiffons asking "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," when nuclear attack rendered the inevitability of "tomorrow" problematic, or to Tommy James and the Shondells's lovers who pant to each other "I Think We're Alone Now," if a nuclear war Copyright © 2003 by Russell Reising and Cultural Logic, ISSN 1097-3087 Reising 2 left them genuinely alone, the only two surviving human beings on earth. In some respects, rock and roll is the ultimate Cold War art form, the vehicle for the cathartic wails of a generation which was told to conform and aspire to a middle-class existence, but which knew all the while that the entire world could be incinerated in thirty minutes. -
