They are institutional catch cries, underpinning a culture that supports, encourages and promotes tertiary education across our many communities. The constant fine-tuning needed to respond to diverse learning aspirations, while also meeting the wide-ranging needs of employers seeking work-ready skilled staff can be challenging, but it undoubtedly makes us a more effective education provider. Oblinger, President and CEO of EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education through the use of information technology. She presented a variety of EDUCAUSE Learning Initiatives designed to advance learning through the innovative use of technology. Oblinger presented critical education trends and IT as a game changer. She defined emerging educational models including: student empowerment, new value chains, and inside the “black box.” A conference highlight was a day at Whakatu Marae, where the topic was meeting the needs of indigenous people. The sessions included presentations on Maori culture and practices, social media, and learner needs. The day concluded with a Hangi, a traditional Maori feast. PIN members made a variety of presentations highlighting best practices from their institutions.     Tairāwhiti’s Second World War memories 1: School children By 1940 patriotic activities in the Tairāwhiti area were in full swing, and children had been involved from the very beginning. The children of the Muriwai School got the ball rolling in October 1939 when they decided that they wanted to contribute to patriotic funds by growing potatoes for sale. In this they were supported by their School Committee, who decided to purchase the necessary seed and manure.1 Children sewed and knitted items such as scarves, mittens and balaclavas for the troops throughout the war years. While children at all schools could undertake these handcrafts, some activities were dependant on location. So it was only country children who would have been able to participate in the scheme proposed by Mrs Thompson of Puha whereby sheepfarmers would donate motherless lambs to be reared by school children.
