On November 1st, we are pleased to present "Action Through Art: The Poetry of Ono No Komachi," a CJRC event led by Velina Hasu Houston.

In this event, U.S./Japan-based Eleven Arts, Inc., and its producer/director Ko Mori, True Heart Films and director Tamara Ruppart along with critically acclaimed transnational U.S.-Japan writer Velina Hasu Houston will discuss the production of their a live-action film about poet Ono no Komachi titled, “Path of Dreams,” with a screenplay written by Houston. Ms. Ruppart, Mr. Mori, and Dr. Houston will discuss their creative project and their inspirations at this event. In addition, they will share poetry written by Komachi read by acclaimed actress Tamlyn Tomita.

About Path of Dreams

Ono no Komachi was a 9th century Japanese waka poet who was born in Akita Prefecture. Her poetry owns an emotional potency and candidness that one might characterize as politically feminist even by today’s standards. Not merely love poems, Komachi’s waka poetry strives to capture the dimensions of the female soul, and the need to act in the face of patriarchal behaviors that sought to contain and

U.S./Japan-based Eleven Arts, Inc., and its producer/director Ko Mori, True Heart Films and director Tamara Ruppart along with critically acclaimed transnational U.S.-Japan writer Velina Hasu Houston are producing a live-action film about Ono no Komachi titled, “Path of Dreams,” with a screenplay written by Houston. The film will be shot on location in Niigata, Japan, in January 2015. Ms. Ruppart has received an Aurora Challenge Grant toward the development of the project. Ms. Ruppart, Mr. Mori, and Dr. Houston will discuss their creative project and their inspirations. In addition, they will share poetry written by Komachi read by acclaimed actress Tamlyn Tomita.
