Due to its particularity as a war between two neighboring socialist countries in Cold War Asia, the Border War has been a sensitive topic in Vietnam. While political sensitivity regarding the national past derives largely from the Party-State, the history and memory of the war has permeated Vietnamese society. The war’s legacy can be seen in anti-China sentiments that, in the globalized neoliberal order, appear to be reviving alongside post-Cold War nationalism. The Border War against China represented an important nationalist turn for Vietnam. At the same time, the traumatic breakdown of the socialist fraternity cultivated anxiety over domestic and international relations.

Yashwantrao Chavan MESSAGE The birth centenary of Shri Yashwantrao Chavan (1913 - 1984) was celebrated last year in a befitting manner by the Government of Maharashtra and the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai. It was an acknowledgement of his stellar contribution as first Chief Minister to the making of modern Maharashtra, as a State with progressive policies and a decentralized democratic set up of administration. In November, 1962, he became the Defence Minister in the aftermath of the India-China conflict. He worked hard to restore the morale of the armed forces and to enhance his strength through modern weapons, better equipment, organisational changes and a harmonious relationship with the armed forces. The efforts paid off in the India-Pakistan conflict in 1965. Subsequently, he held the high offices of Union Home Minister, Union Finance Minister and Foreign Minister of India. In 1979, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a freedom fighter, effective parliamentarian and an astute administrator. He was a connoisseur of fine arts, a great lover of books and an author of acknowledged literary merit. He was very fond of watching good films, plays and stage performances of folk-art. The 'Yashwant' International Film Festival is a tribute to the outstanding personay of Yashwantrao Chavan. • Vietnamese and Chinese Movies About Royalty: from Confucian Cosmology to Ecological Politics
DOI: 10.4312/as.2020.8.2.135-162 135 Vietnamese and Chinese Movies about Royalty: From Confucian Cosmology to Ecological Politics Cam-Giang HOANG* Abstract Since 2002, with the enormously successful release of the movie Hero by Zhang Yimou, we have been witnessing the resurrection of the royal theme in contemporary East Asian cinema, and the return of Confucian cosmology as its philosophical foundation. In this paper, I focus on Vietnamese films which represent royal subjects and court life, like Heroes of the Tay Son Dynasty (Tây Sơn hào kiệt; Lý Hùng, Lý Huỳnh, and Phượng Hoàng; 2010), Blood Letter (Thiên mệnh anh hùng, Victor Vũ, 2012), and Tam Cam The Untold Story (Tấm Cám chuyện chưa kể, Ngô Thanh Vân, 2016); and Chinese films, like Hero (英雄, Zhang Yimou, 2002), The Banquet (夜宴, Feng Xiaogang, 2006), and Red Cliff (赤壁, John Woo, 2008). Firstly and most importantly, my essay examines how the cosmic and environmental elements in such movies are manipulated to advocate some particular political discourse as a kind of ecological politics. From this analysis, I analyse and explain the similarities in how the filmmakers in Vietnam and China establish the ste- reotypes of power and legitimacy of authority utilizing and transforming the Confucian spiritual cosmology. I also try to clarify the difference between the two cinemas in how they express the concepts “the Unity of Heaven and Man” (tianren heyi), “Rectification of Names” (zhengming), and “Virtue of Loving Life” (haosheng) in their political impli- cations. Finally, I will discuss the layers of meaning and visual narratives by analysing the characters and social contexts of the films to reaffirm the varying degrees of influence of Confucian tradition on contemporary forms of cultural and political practices.

  • Examining Postwar Issues of Male Identity Crisis and Disenfranchisment in Vietnamese Films: the Wild Reed and Living in Fear
EXAMINING POSTWAR ISSUES OF MALE IDENTITY CRISIS AND DISENFRANCHISMENT IN VIETNAMESE FILMS: THE WILD REED AND LIVING IN FEAR A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Eileen Nho Vo May 2010 © 2010 Eileen Nho Vo ABSTRACT Themes of war and revolution dominated the Vietnamese film industry when it first developed during the early years of the First Indochina War (1945-54). These films glorified comradeship on the battlefield and venerated the image of heroic soldiers who sacrificed their lives and youth for the liberation and unification of the nation, which was achieved in 1975 after nearly a century of continued warfare. In the postwar period, the legacies of war continue to dominate the content of many films. Filmmakers have privileged the social plight of women as a key narrative tool to discuss the emotional wounds of war, and the trope of grieving Vietnamese women, particularly in the postwar context, has come to symbolize the sorrow and devastation of the nation in the aftermath of war. Yet, an examination of the crisis of Vietnamese male identity and the role of men in postwar society raise many interesting social and political questions about that society. The story of the postwar as told from the perspective of male protagonists in film sheds light on the mine-laden social and political landscapes through which the nation maneuvered to build a new and unified Vietnam. This thesis analyzes two films, Co Lau [The Wild Reed] (1993) and Song Trong So Hai [Living in fear] (2005), which revisit the theme of war from a nuanced angle through a critical examination of postwar issues from the perspective of male protagonists.
