Since then, Masoretic studies have undergone a true renaissance. The publications on Masoretic issues have proliferated, and the importance of the Masorah for the study of the text of the Hebrew Bible has been stressed in numerous reviews. This brief survey presents the evolution of Masoretic stu- dies, the main research lines and achievements, and some of the most relevant works in the last forty years. Tonight we want to continue in our in-depth study of this book of beginnings, the book of Genesis, and we've seen a lot if you've been with us. We looked at the beginning of the earth, and the beginning of the universe, and the beginning of mankind, and the origin of marriage, and the beginning of the family, and the beginning of sacrifice and worship, and the beginning of the gospel message, way back there in Chapter 3, verse 15, when the LORD promised One who would come that would crush the head of the serpent, preached in advance. We've gone from creation to the fall, from the curse to its conseQuences. We watched Abel and then Cain in a very ungodly line that God doesn't track very far. -

This paper will examine that engagement in the Hellenistic Greco-Roman era to the end of the first century CE. In part sexual issues were a key element of demarcation between Jews and the wider community, alongside such matters as circumcision, food laws, sabbath keeping and idolatry. Jewish writers, such as Philo of Alexandria, make much of the alleged sexual profligacy of their Gentile contemporaries, not least in association with wild drunken parties, same-sex relations and pederasty. Jews, including the emerging Christian movement, claimed the moral high ground. In part, however, matters of sexuality were also areas where intercultural influence is evident, such as in the shift in Jewish tradition from polygyny to monogyny, but also in the way Jewish and Christian writers adapted the suspicion and sometimes rejection of passions characteristic of some popular philosophies of their day, seeing them as allies in their moral crusade. Introduction When the apostle Paul wrote to his recently founded community of believers that they were to behave “not as the Gentiles” in relation to sexual matters (1 Thess 4:5), he was standing in a long tradition of Jews demarcating themselves from their world over sexual issues. -

He defeated the Persian king Darius at Gaugamela, advanced to a welcoming Babylon, and progressed to Persepolis where he burned Xerxes palace supposedly in retaliation for Persias invasions of Greece some 150 years previously (Diodorus 17.72.1-6). Thus one empire gave way to another by a different name. So began the Greek empires that dominated Judea/Israel for the next two hundred or so years, the focus of this chapter. Is a postcolonial discussion of these empires possible and what might it highlight? Considerable dif�culties stand in the way. One is the weight of conventional analyses and disciplinary practices which have framed the discourse with emphases on the various roles of the great men, the ruling state, military battles, and Greek settlers, and have paid relatively little regard to the dynamics of imperial power from the perspectives of native inhabitants, the impact on peasants and land, and poverty among non-elites, let alone any reciprocal impact between colonizers and colon- ized. -

A REVIEW by Thomas F. McDaniel.1 of WILLIAM F. ALBRIGHT’S HISTORY, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND CHRISTIAN HUMANISM 2 The scholarly contributions of William F. Albright need no introduction. To the contrary, they have been widely recognized and acclaimed in the United States, Europe and Israel. In the past twenty years, Albright has received twenty honorary doctorates from such universities as Harvard, Yale, Hebrew Union College, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Saint Andrews University, the University of Oslo, the University of Uppsala, etc. He is one of three humanistic scholars ever to have been elected to the American Academy of Sciences. Albright*s first scholarly paper appeared in the Orientalistiche Literaturseitung in 1913, and they have poured forth ever since. The bib- liography of Albright*s works (including books, articles, reports, and book reviews) listed at the end of the Albright Festschrift, (entitled, The Bible and the Ancient Near East, edited by G. Ernest Wright) is a list of over 825 published scholarly contributions which appeared between 1911 and 1958. NOAH GENESIS (B’RESHIYT 6:9 – 11:32) INTRODUCTION: 1. Because of the wickedness – the mixing and mingling – God determined to blot out all inhabitants of the earth. a. Mankind had corrupted his way and, consequently, corrupted the earth itself. 2. Josephus records that Adam had predicted destruction of world by flood and fire. a. Antiquities of the Jews, Book I, chapter 2, paragraph iii. 3. Lamech named him “Noah” indicating that he would bring “rest,” meaning of name. a. Geneological record in Gen. 5 seems to indicate that he was born in 1056. b. Possibility that he was born in 1058, written in Hebrew as . 4. Noah was the remnant – “he found grace” in the eyes of the LORD; he was righteous, unpolluted and walked with God. a. Noah, like Adam, would be father of mankind after the flood. b. From the beginning, we see that there is always a remnant. c. Apparently, Noah was the ONLY one considered righteous. 5. The flood waters are called “the waters of Noah” in Isaiah 54:9. a. Rabbis deduce that the waters are Noah’s responsibility. b. He had been content to protect his own righteousness by distancing himself. 6. If he had completed responsibility to that generation fully, flood might not have happened. a. Inferring that, ultimately, God’s people are responsible for some events. b. “Sons of God” in Gen. 6 are how narrative begins; ends with corrupted earth. 7. Much is made of fact that Noah “walked with God” but Abraham “before Him.” a. Abraham is considered as spiritually superior to Noah. -

Chaos Theory and the Text of the Old Testament1 Peter J. Gentry Peter J. Gentry is Donald L. Williams Professor of Old Testament Interpretation and Director of the Hexapla Institute at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served on the faculty of Toronto Baptist Seminary and Bible College and also taught at the University of Toronto, Heritage Theological Seminary, and Tyndale Seminary. Dr. Gentry is the author of many articles and book reviews, the co-author of Kingdom through Covenant, 2nd ed. (Crossway, 2018) and God’s Kingdom through God’s Covenants (Crossway, 2015), and the author of How to Read and Understand the Biblical Prophets (Crossway, 2017), and he recently published a critical edition of Ecclesiastes for the Göttingen Septuagint (2019). Introduction Canon and Text are closely related. For those who believe in divine revelation mediated by authorized agents, the central questions are (1) which writings come from these agents authorized to speak for God and (2) have their writings been reliably transmitted to us? Although my inquiry is focused on the latter question, the former is logically prior. How one answers the first question will determine evaluation of evidence relating to the second. What defines a canonical text according to Nahum Sarna, is “a fixed arrangement of content” and “the tendency to produce a standardized text.”2 Since the very first biblical text constituted a covenant, this automatically implies a fixed arrangement of content and a standard text. I am referring to the Covenant at Sinai, a marriage between Yahweh and Israel. A marriage contract does not have a long oral pre-history. -

Exodus 20:4 provides a prohibition against idolatry; Deuteronomy 4 provides the theological rationale for such a prohibition. The formless image juxtaposed to the auditory revelation of the LORD1 at Horeb posits concern for fidelity to the covenant as Israel encounters Canaanite cultures whose static representations of deities were prevalent and authoritative. The polemics in the Bible against idolatry are rooted in two primary concerns: (1) fidelity to the covenant made at Horeb, and (2) the substitution and worship of creation instead of the Creator. In order to examine the nature and meaning of idolatry in Deuteronomy 4:15-16, 23, this study will employ a rhetorical-critical2 analysis of the specific framing structures, literary patterns, discourse, and logic in the text.3 ”.will be rendered “the LORD יהוה Out of respect for the Jewish reader .1 2. In this study the external structure will frame the literary context, and the internal structures will inform the exegetical and theological context. Together these components accomplish the exegetical means for informing the reading of the external (historical) framing and how the audience of the text might have best understood its rhetoric and applied its theology. -

Ericksen Kurt Mayer Chair in Holocaust Studies Pacific Lutheran University I am pleased to deliver the Raul Hilberg Memorial Lecture, not only for the chance to join the impressive list of prior speakers, but because of Raul Hilberg himself. He was the man who essentially invented Holocaust Studies, completing his path-breaking work while teaching here at the University of Vermont. When Hilberg began his graduate program in political science at Columbia University, he was twenty-two years old. At that time, in 1948, he focused already on the idea and the research project that would make him known to all of us. Here is his description of that moment in his 1996 book, Politics of Memory: "I had become sure of myself, secure in my decision, certain that I would fill in the pieces of my jigsaw puzzle."1 He soon approached one of his professors at Columbia, Franz Neumann, the author of Behemoth and an imposing scholar on Nazi Germany.2 Hilberg asked Neumann if he would take on his proposal for a doctoral dissertation, "The Destruction of the European Jews." Neumann said yes, but he then added the comment, "It's your funeral."3 This exchange took place just three years after the defeat of Hitler's Germany and long before Holocaust Studies had begun to make its mark in the world of ideas.
