Prize Bridge Award:Grade Seperation MARITIME OFF-RAMP he 2,356’ long "Maritime Off- Ramp” is one of seven bridge Tcontracts in California’s I-880 Replacement Project. The Maritime Off-Ramp replaced a concrete struc- ture on Cypress Street (now named the Nelson Mandela Parkway) in Oakland. The “Maritime Off-Ramp,” also known as the Horseshoe Line or “HS” Line because of its 250’ radius horseshoe shape, is an orthotropic steel bridge. The remainder of the bridges in the project are steel plate girder bridges with concrete decks or post-tensioned cast-in-place con- crete. The “HS” Line becomes California’s sixth orthotropic bridge.Loma Prieta Earthquake On October 17, 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake (magnitude 7.1) occurred near Oakland and San Francisco, California. The I-880 Cypress Street Viaduct, a two-level reinforced concrete structure com- pleted in 1957 carried I-880 freeway traffic through downtown Oakland. The upper roadway collapsed result- ing in 41 deaths and 108 injuries. A portion of the roadway between 7th and 34th streets was removed due to the damage. I-880 is a critical interstate free- way connecting San Jose and the East Bay Area to San Francisco, Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada. The I-880 Freeway Viaduct was a section of I-880 that carried between 140,000 and 160,000 vehicles per day and provided for eight lanes of mixed-flow traffic. THE I-880 REPLACEMENT PROJECT The I-880 Replacement Project was designed and then built in seven separate construction contracts to avoid impacting traffic in this impor- tant transportation corridor.

STRIKE Vietnam War Weekly History December 10th – December 16th, 2017 Issue: 78 st nd nd st Brief History of the 501 , 502 and 2 Brigade (101 ABN DIV) The 502nd, or “five-oh-deuce”, was activated July 1, 1941 at Fort Benning, Georgia as the 502nd parachute infantry battalion, as an experimental unit formed to test the doctrine and tactics of parachute assaults. The 502nd entered combat in World War II on June 6, 1944, by jumping into Normandy, with allied forces landing on D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Between 1945 and 1964. A major reorganization took place on 3 February 1964, when the 2nd Brigade of the 101st Airborne was activated at Fort Campbell, replacing the 1st Airborne Battle Group, 501st Infantry Regiment. The reorganization from the battle groups to brigades and battalions placed two battalions of the 502nd in different brigades of the 101st. The 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry was in the 1st Brigade with 1-327th and 2-327th Infantry. Which deployed to Vietnam and arrived at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam on 29 July 1965, they were commanded by the most notable commander LTC Hank “The Gunfighter” Emerson. The new 2nd Brigade’s original organic battalions were the 1st and 2d Battalions, 501st Infantry, and the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry. December 1967 the 501st, 502nd and 2nd Brigade deployed by C-141 aircraft and arrived at Bien Hoa Airbase on 13 December 1967. Coronado National Memorial Historical Research Project Research Topics Written by Joseph P. Sánchez, Ph.D. John Howard White, Ph.D. Edited by Angélica Sánchez-Clark, Ph.D. With the assistance of Hector Contreras, David Gómez and Feliza Monta University of New Mexico Graduate Students Spanish Colonial Research Center A Partnership between the University of New Mexico and the National Park Service [Version Date: May 20, 2014] 1 Coronado National Memorial Coronado Expedition Research Topics 1) Research the lasting effects of the expedition in regard to exchanges of cultures, Native American and Spanish. Was the shaping of the American Southwest a direct result of the Coronado Expedition's meetings with natives? The answer to this question is embedded throughout the other topics. However, by 1575, the Spanish Crown declared that the conquest was over and the new policy of pacification would be in force. Still, the next phase that would shape the American Southwest involved settlement, missionization, and expansion for valuable resources such as iron, tin, copper, tar, salt, lumber, etc. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado’s expedition did set the Native American wariness toward the Spanish occupation of areas close to them. Rebellions were the corrective to their displeasure over colonial injustices and institutions as well as the mission system that threatened their beliefs and spiritualism. In the end, a kind of syncretism and symbiosis resulted. Today, given that the Spanish colonial system recognized that the Pueblos and mission Indians had a legal status, land grants issued during that period protects their lands against the new settlement pattern that followed: that of the Anglo-American.
