As you may know, since we last hosted this event in 2010, we have constructed a new gymnasium (the “Cave”) in which this year’s tournament will be held. We are very excited to be able to have 300-plus wonderful and talented student athletes use this very brand new facility. We also look forward to proving opportunities for all student athletes, coaches, and community members attending this event to create wonderful memories and make new friends and connections and strengthen old ones. Also, while people often think physical abilities and skills are what makes a great student athlete, that is not all. Leadership and team-building skills are also very important, and it is events like the Clerc Classic that provides all of our student athletes the opportunity to hone those skills as well. For you student athletes: go and shine on the court! Most importantly, play to your heart’s content and have fun! Enjoy the tournament to the fullest! With Cubs Pride, Nancy California School for the Deaf, Riverside Welcome Letters From Jesse J. Bailey & Laura Edwards, Athletics Greetings from California School for the Deaf-Riverside! On behalf of CSD-Riverside and Athletic Department, we want to extend a warm welcome to Clerc Classic XIX! With new CAVE Gym, you will enjoy your time here during the weekend! Clerc Classic XIX will present a wonderful competition among schools from all over the country in basketball and cheerleading! We will have the chance to rekindle old friendships and make new friends. I wanted to take this time to say MANY THANKS to our wonderful committee in making this happen for all of you! Kudos to our coaches, staff, parents, players, and the community for helping us out in many different areas during the tournament. Again, welcome and wish all teams the best! With Cub Pride, Jesse J. Bailey Athletic Director Welcome Friends and Family from Afar, On behalf of the CSDR community, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to Riverside and to our school. Rest assured, the warm welcome does not only mean our open arms, but also the warm weather that is sure to make you smile before returning to colder climates in the nation after the weekend. This is not just any ordinary Clerc Classic tournament to any of us because it is the first big event we have ever hosted at our new ‘The Cave’ gymnasium. We are honored that you are able to join us in our celebration of this beautiful beginning of our athletic programs. Throughout the weekend, we will all witness the amazing set of athleticism and teamwork among our budding Deaf teens. This weekend will bring them, as well as ourselves, together on court, during social events, and hopefully for years to come. Let this be the Clerc Classic weekend to remember! Be sure to take plenty of pictures with the palm trees before you go home! Laura Edwards PE/Athletics Supervisor Clerc Classic XIX Tournament Welcome Letters From Jesse J. Clerc has been called “The Apostle of the Deaf in America” and “The Father of the Deaf” by generations of American deaf people. With Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, he co-founded the rst school for the deaf in North America, the Hartford Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb on April 15, 1817 in the old Bennet’s City Hotel, Hartford, Connecticut. The school was subsequently re-named The American School for the Deaf and in 1821 moved to its present site. The school remains the oldest existing school for the deaf in the United States. Clerc was the rst great proponent of sign language instruction over oral instruction in this country, an advocate for fundamental rights for the deaf people, such as the right to marry, and the inspiration for the spread of deaf education throughout the United States. Clerc’s knowledge of deaf people’s natural inclination to use sign language formed the basis of his view of deafness as a minority culture and not unlike language-minority groups that exist in the midst of majority cultures throughout the world.
