As you may know, since we last hosted this event in 2010, we have constructed a new gymnasium (the “Cave”) in which this year’s tournament will be held. We are very excited to be able to have 300-plus wonderful and talented student athletes use this very brand new facility. We also look forward to proving opportunities for all student athletes, coaches, and community members attending this event to create wonderful memories and make new friends and connections and strengthen old ones. Also, while people often think physical abilities and skills are what makes a great student athlete, that is not all. Leadership and team-building skills are also very important, and it is events like the Clerc Classic that provides all of our student athletes the opportunity to hone those skills as well. This tournament brings out the best from our basketball and cheerleading teams from all over the nation and should be an opportunity to recognize Laurent Clerc and his friends for their contribution towards Deaf education! Through much planning and scheduling, our Clerc Classic committee is excited to bring to you yet another great basketball & cheerleading weekend full of exciting games. The continued growth and success of this tournament can only be accomplished with ongoing support from our Riverside community. Clerc has been called “The Apostle of the Deaf in America” and “The Father of the Deaf” by generations of American deaf people. With Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, he co-founded the rst school for the deaf in North America, the Hartford Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb on April 15, 1817 in the old Bennet’s City Hotel, Hartford, Connecticut. The school was subsequently re-named The American School for the Deaf and in 1821 moved to its present site. The school remains the oldest existing school for the deaf in the United States. Clerc was the rst great proponent of sign language instruction over oral instruction in this country, an advocate for fundamental rights for the deaf people, such as the right to marry, and the inspiration for the spread of deaf education throughout the United States. Clerc’s knowledge of deaf people’s natural inclination to use sign language formed the basis of his view of deafness as a minority culture and not unlike language-minority groups that exist in the midst of majority cultures throughout the world.
