January 2017 Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Community, Welcome to the Clerc Classic XVII, National Deaf Prep Basketball Tournament and Cheerleading Competition and welcome to our weird and wonderful city of Austin! I am quite certain the Laurent Clerc and Gallaudet would have continued heading west if they had known about the land where tacos are an art form and regularly eaten for breakfast, where barbecue is serious business, where live music and festivals are more common than gas stations, where 1.5 million bats fly through the night sky at once and both hipsters and cowboys will discourage you from moving here (except if you are Deaf---did you know we are the fasting growing deaf community in the nation?). Though Texans would never include basketball in their top ten best of “everything is bigger and better here” — for you, our friends, we make an exception for this Clerc Classic event. So we extend a big Texas welcome to our colleagues and friends from Fremont, Indiana, Maryland, Model, Riverside and Minnesota. On behalf of our Ranger Nation we are excited to be your hosts and we look forward to some great basketball and cheering. Clerc Classic started at MSSD in Washington D.C. in 2001 and has thrived ever since becoming a national tournament annually. This tournament brings out the best from our basketball and cheerleading teams from all over the country and should be an opportunity to remember what Laurent Clerc and his friends have done for Deaf education. We want to welcome everyone from California School for the Deaf, California School for the Deaf- Riverside, Indiana School for the Deaf, Maryland School for the Deaf, Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf and Model Secondary School for the Deaf. The Clerc Classic tournament is fun-filled competition between the seven of the most highly competitive teams from all across our nation over a four day period. We want to thank all of our committee members who have worked hard to make Clerc Classic a reality and to make this a memorable one for you. If you have a chance, please thank them. I would like to thank our sponsors - Gallaudet University, Purple, RIT-NTID, and Sorenson for their generous sponsorship. I look forward to watching you play with dedication and commitment. Good luck to everyone! May the best team win! Chris Hamilton - Athletic Director Texas School for the Deaf 5 LAURENT CLERC Laurent Clerc (born Louis Laurent Marie Clerc) was born on December 26, 1785 in La Balme les Grottes, France, a village on the northeastern edge of Lyon. Clerc has been called “The Apostle of the Deaf in America” and “The Father of the Deaf” by generations of American deaf people. With Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, he co-founded the first school for the deaf in North America, the Hartford Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb on April 15, 1817 in the old Bennet’s City Hotel, Hartford, Connecticut. The school was subsequently re-named The American School for the Deaf and in 1821 moved to its present site. The school remains the oldest existing school for the deaf in the United States. Clerc was the first great proponent of sign language instruction over oral instruction in this country, an advocate for fundamental rights for the deaf people, such as the right to marry, and the inspiration for the spread of deaf education throughout the United States. Clerc’s knowledge of deaf people’s natural inclination to use sign language formed the basis of his view of deafness as a minority culture and not unlike language-minority groups that exist in the midst of majority cultures throughout the world. He held this minority culture view of deaf people, deafness and sign language more than a hundred years before the first comprehensive studies of the sign language of the deaf revealed it to be a natural language equivalent to English and all other spoken languages. After moving to the Unites States, Clerc returned to visit France three more times. He assisted in 1864 with the opening of what would later be named Gallaudet University. Clerc died in 1869 and is buried in Hartford. 6 Clerc Classic XVII Tournament CLERC CLASSIC XVII COMMITTEE Jesse J.
