Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 2017 runners

25 September 2017 In just 48 hours, horses will be lining up for the richest turf race on the planet. The €5,000,000 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has once more drawn the cream of middle-distance horses, again demonstrating its international appeal. Here we shall have a look at each runner and gauge its respective prospects.

1-ZARAK () 4yo colt-59,5 kg

Beautifully-bred colt out of champion , he was unlucky to be born the same year as a certain who twice had his measure last year, most notably in the Prix du Jockey-Club. His first effort over 2400m (1½m), the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, provided him with a maiden Gr.1 victory. According to jockey, Christophe Soumillon, only is the superior horse in Sunday’s line-up. - - 2-DOHA DREAM (Grégory Benoist) 4yo colt-59,5 kg Winner of the Gr.2 Prix Jean de Chaudenay at three, he fell in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud when still full of running. He was narrowly beaten in his two subsequent group races and while most likely giving his owners pleasure seeing their colours carried in the Arc, he has no more than a secondary chance. - - 3-ONE FOOT IN HEAVEN (James-William Doyle) 5yo colt-59,5 kg Beautifully-bred five year-old that won a brace of Gr.2 events in 2016 and ended the season with a third place in the Vase. He has raced just three times this year and on comeback finished a solid second to Garlingari in the Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte. In spite of the immense talent of his handler, he will still need to show himself in a better light on Sunday. - - 4- (James-Vincent Crowley) 4yo colt-59,5 kg Late developer that showed some ability as a three year-old but has really come into himself this year. He has not ceased to improve since his return to competition, winning the Eclipse at Sandown and latterly beat in the Juddmonte International. He was, however, beaten 4½ lengths by Enable in the King George and it is hard to see him turning the tables. - - 5- (Mickaël Barzalona) 4yo colt-59,5 kg After having shown considerable merit as a two year-old, he did not live up to expectations the following year. As a four year-old though, he has excelled and beat Zarak to win the at Saint-Cloud in the spring. Runner-up to Dschingis Secret on his comeback in the , he is sure to be at peak fitness for the big event and should be good enough to finish in the mix. - - 6-SILVERWAVE (Pierre-Charles Boudot) 5yo colt-59,5 kg ’s faithful servant that won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Prix Foy in 2016 before failing to leave his mark in the Arc. He finished a close second to Zarak at Saint-Cloud this season but flopped in the Prix Foy and will be sent out an outside chance at best. - - 7-IDAHO (James-Anthony Heffernan) 4yo colt-59,5 kg Winner of a Gr.2 at Ascot in June, he produced his best performance to date when third to Enable and Ulysses in the King George, although he did finish 5¼ lengths behind the winner. He failed to make any impression in the G.1 Sword Dancer S. at Saratoga at the end of August, and is not a realistic proposition this weekend. - - 8-DISCHINGIS SECRET (Adrie de Vries) 4yo colt-59,5 kg Third in last year’s German Derby, he has made fine progress this year and secured his first Gr.1 when winning the Grosser Preis von Berlin mid-August. His Prix Foy success caught the eye and his aptitude for heavy going will stand him in good stead if the rain decides to pay a visit to Chantilly over the weekend. - - 9- (Christophe-Patrice Lemaire) 4yo colt-59,5 kg Remarkable Japanese colt that has solid references in his home country, and the Arc has been on his agenda since 2016. He has won, among others, the coveted Arima Kinen, and although having begun the season well, he flopped in the Prix Foy on his first start in . He discovered the Chantilly undulations on that occasion and the ground was perhaps too soft. He is expected to put in a more competitive performance on Sunday. - - http://horseraces.pmu.fr/news/prix-de-larc-de-triomphe-2017-runners Page 1 of 2 Prix de lʼArc de Triomphe 2017 runners 9/29/17, 817 AM

110-SATONO NOBLESSE (Yuga Kawada) 7yo colt-59,5 kg A Gr.2 winner in , he is no more than racing companion to stablemate Satono Diamond. He made the running in the Prix Foy, finishing last of six, and can be expected to be used for the same purpose at the weekend. - - 11-IQUITOS (Andrasch Starke) 5yo colt-59,5 kg One of the best older horses in to which he attested when winning the Gr.1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis late July before coming second in the Grosser Preis von Baden early September. He has not once been out of the first two in all four races this season and while still something of an outsider he should appreciate the softened ground. One to note. - - 12-ORDER OF SAINT GEORGE (Donnacha O'Brien) 5yo colt-59,5 kg Third in the Arc last year after having won the Ascot Gold Cup, he has won three from five this season and his narrow defeat to Big Orange (who runs in the Prix Cadran on Saturday) in the most recent Gold Cup will go down in history. He most recently romped to a nine-lengths victory in the Irish Saint-Leger and has never appeared as good as he does aged five. - - 13-SEVENTH HEAVEN (Patrick-Joseph Smullen) 4yo filly-58 kg High-class winner of the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks in 2016, she ended the season with a fourth place in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita. Second in the Sheema Classic in March she then beat One Foot In Heaven by five lengths in the Jockey Club Stakes six weeks later. She flopped on comeback at the Curragh three weeks ago, and whether she deserves to be given another chance remains to be seen. - - 14- (Cristian Demuro) 3yo colt-56,5 kg The best three year-old of the spring following his victories in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and the Prix du Jockey-Club. He looked a shadow of his former self on comeback in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville six weeks ago. Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget wanted to avoid running him in the given the long journey from Pau to Chantilly, so he will come here fresh and with a lot of support, but there still remains a question-mark over his form. - - 15- (Wayne-Martin Lordan) 3yo colt-56,5 kg Another colt from Ballydoyle, he could finish no closer than sixth in the , but showed improvement when beating by a neck in the Irish version a month later. Three weeks ago he had the Saint-Leger in the bag. He has the ideal profile to play an active role in a race like the Arc and will be sent out with a certain confidence. - - 16 PLUMATIC (Maxime Guyon) 3yo colt-56,5 kg Smartly-bred colt out of 2010 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Plumania, he has raced just four times and never beyond 2100m. In the absence of Left Hand he will the the sole representative of the Wertheimer Brothers. Trained by André Fabre and ridden by Maxime Guyon, he may not be an obvious choice on paper, but if the Chantilly handler has decided to run her, she should not be ignored. Surprise element. - - 17-ENABLE (Lanfranco Dettori) 3yo filly-55 kg After having outclassed her contemporaries in both the Epsom and Irish Oaks, this filly by Nathaniel (who was also trained by ) went on to dominate the older generation in the King George. She achieved her fourth straight Gr.1 success in the Yorkshire Oaks, winning by five lengths. She has attracted the lion’s share of support so far and considering her pedigree and previous performances, she has everything it takes to win the Arc. - - 18-WINTER (Ryan-Lee Moore) 3yo filly-55 kg As good as Enable is over 2400m, Winter has outclassed her generation over a mile this year. Although narrowly beaten by stablemate Hydrangea in the Gr.1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown just over three weeks ago, she is still one of the classiest horses in the field. She won the Nassau Stakes over 2000m on her first attempt past a mile and if she can stay like her sire, Galileo, she will compensate for any distance shortcomings of her dam, by Australian sprinter, Choisir. Aidan O’Brien is no stranger to the big occasion and if is onboard, it will say a lot about this filly’s prospects. - - Picture: The most coveted turf trophy in the world
