  • Bishop Angell
For immediate release Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington 55 Joy Drive, So. Burlington, VT 05403 Contact: Ellen Kane, 846-5837 or [email protected] Burlington, Vermont: The Most Reverend Kenneth A. Angell, the eighth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, age 86, died on October 4, 2016. He served as Bishop of Burlington from 1992 to 2005, a good-humored man of faith with a heart directed towards the dignity of all humanity. Bishop Angell was a man who pledged cooperation and support within the ecumenical and inter-faith communities of Vermont as he sought to work with them to transform society to reflect the values they shared and proclaimed. He also exhibited a shepherd’s heart in his care for all the people of Vermont regardless of their faith and lived out his episcopal motto to “serve the Lord with gladness.” After the events of September 11, 2001, in which his brother and sister-in-law lost their lives, Bishop Angell exhibited exceptional leadership in calling for forgiveness and mercy, as well as peace and reconciliation among all people. During his tenure as Bishop, he established a diocesan Bishop’s Commission on Women to ascertain the needs and concerns of Vermont Catholics on issues related to women in the Church; the Office of Safe Environments to implement the Charter for the Protection of Children and to oversee programs to ensure safety for those involved with Church ministries; a House of Discernment for vocations to the priesthood; and Ministry Training program for those who were discerning a call to leadership ministries.

Independent Report on Priest Sex Abuse Cases for the Diocese of Burlington, VT. (1950 to 2019) Child sexual abuse is a crime and a sin in the Catholic Church. Bishop Christopher J. Coyne, who took over the Diocese of Burlington in January 2015, decided in October 2018 to join many other Dioceses across the nation to release the names of priests that had credible allegations of sexual abuse filed against them by victims who were under the age of 18 at the time of the incident. Bishop Coyne announced he would appoint an independent citizen panel to comb through the diocesan personnel files to compile a list of priests with credible allegations against them. It should be noted this Committee is separate and apart from a State Task Force created in September 2018 by prosecutors, police and politicians. Each individual responded affirmatively when asked to serve on this Review Committee. We are parents, spouses and siblings - some working, some retired. From the start, we each appreciated the gravity of the task before us. All team members brought their own gifts and perspectives, and each became an invaluable resource for the integrated group. We brought together our shared intellect, insight and empathy. The importance of the organizational and note-taking skills of many in the group were critical to the process. The volume of the files we were presented with was itself a challenge. Files were made available to the team in digital and paper form. Honest discussions always were motivated by fairness - fairness to victims and their families and fairness to those accused.
