He was seemingly referring to a book – ‘Pakistan or Partition of India’ authored by Dr. Ambedkar in 1940 on the contemporary problem that had seized the imagination of the entire country. The book was so exhaustive and objective in its treatment of the problem that soon it was used as an authentic resource by both, Hindus as well as Muslims in their pre-independence parleys. None could ever accuse it of any bias for or against any community. Such a book was being used by Mr. katiyar to tarnish the image of Ambedkar by painting him so petty as to be against Muslims. It was not only an issue of hurting the sentiments of entire Dalit community for whom Ambedkar is a God, but it was also an affront to all those who considered Ambedkar as an icon for liberal democracy. The book does not entirely concern with the Katiyar controversy, however.

D. Cornell University 2009 Commentators have frequently suggested that India is going through an “age of intolerance” as writers, artists, filmmakers, scholars and journalists among others have been targeted by institutions of the state as well as political parties and interest groups for hurting the sentiments of some section of Indian society. However, this age of intolerance has coincided with a period that has also been characterized by the “deepening” of Indian democracy, as previously subordinated groups have begun to participate more actively and substantively in democratic politics. This project is an attempt to understand the reasons for the persistence of illiberalism in Indian politics, particularly as manifest in censorship practices. It argues that one of the reasons why censorship has persisted in India is that having the “right to censor” has come be established in the Indian constitutional order’s negotiation of multiculturalism as a symbol of a cultural group’s substantive political empowerment. This feature of the Indian constitutional order has made the strategy of “seeking offense” readily available to India’s politicians, who understand it to be an efficacious way to discredit their competitors’ claims of group representativeness within the context of democratic identity politics.

    Journal of Culture, Society and Development www.iiste.org ISSN 2422-8400 An International Peer-reviewed Journal Vol.39, 2018 The ‘Item Number’ in Indian Cinema: Deconstructing the Paradox Isha Jain (Corresponding author) National Law School of India University, Bangalore, India Abstract The “item number” is a hyper-sexualised song-and-dance performance that is characteristic to mainstream Bollywood cinema. When viewed in the context of a general tendency towards the censorship of public depictions of sexualized women in other spheres of the Indian polity, the ubiquity and popularity of item numbers reflects a confounding cultural paradox. The aim of this article is to deconstruct this paradox, by identifying the narrative structures and plot devices employed by film-makers to market these performances without suffering the disapproval of either the Indian State apparatus or the purportedly prudish Indian cinema- goer. Introduction The Indian State, through both its formal and informal centres of power, continues to burden the Indian woman with the charge of guarding national pride, culture, and morality.1 The defiling of the Indian woman, synonymous with her sexualisation, is the defiling of India. This parallel is evident in the title of “Mother India”, a 1957 film centred around a de-sexualised, self-sacrificial female protagonist intended to be emblematic of both the ideal Indian woman and of India herself.2 Yet, the Indian film industry has succeeded at carving out a niche for the commodification and sale of female sexuality within a broader milieu characterised by the disapprobation of that very sexuality. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the “item number”,3 a hyper-sexualised cinematic performance that is both paradoxically and quintessentially Bollywood.

NARIMAN, J. Leave granted. 1. The present appeal arises out of the demolition of Babri Masjid. We are concerned in this case with two FIRs lodged on 6th December, 1992. The first viz. Crime No.197 of 1992, is against lakhs of kar sewaks alleging the offences of dacoity, robbery, causing of hurt, injuring/defiling places of public worship, promoting enmity between two groups on grounds of religion, etc. The IPC offences were, therefore, under Sections 153-A, 295, 297, 332, 337, 338, 395 and 397. The second FIR 1 viz. FIR No.198 of 1992 was lodged against eight persons named therein - Mr. L.K. Advani, Mr. Ashok Singhal, Mr. Vinay Katiar, Ms. Uma Bharati, Ms. Sadhvi Ritambara, Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Mr. Giriraj Kishore and Mr. Vishnu Hari Dalmia, two of whom are dead due to passage of time viz. Mr. Ashok Singhal and Mr. Giriraj Kishore. The FIR alleges offences under Sections 153-A, 153-B and Section 505 IPC. 46 further FIRs pertaining to cognizable offences and 1 FIR pertaining to non- cognizable offences were also lodged. Initially, a Special Court set up at Lalitpur was to try these cases but subsequently notifications were issued by the State Government, after consultation with the High Court, dated 8 th September, 1993 whereby these cases were to be tried by a Special Court at Lucknow.

The group believes that the film presents the Rajput community in a negative light, and their leadership has pledged that “if screening of the film is not stopped, members of our community will not stop from demolishing screens in theaters”. • Intermittent protests against the film occurred across Gurgaon, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on January 22-23, as protesters blocked roads and demonstrated outside cinema halls. Reports also indicate vandalism of a mall in Gurgaon on January 22 by suspected Karni Sena activists, with the organization denying any involvement and attributing the attack to mischievous elements. • On January 18, the Supreme Court ruled that the states of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat must allow the unimpeded release of the film. The same day, suspected Karni Sena activists allegedly attacked a cinema hall in Bihar, and the Hindu right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and allied Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organizations extended support for a ban on the movie. • Karni Sena supporters gathered outside the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) office in Mumbai on January 12, with 100 activists detained by police personnel shortly after. The organization held its largest protest march against the film in Surat, Gujarat on November 12 2017, page 1 / 4 which reportedly drew participation in excess of 100,000.
