Both sponsored research and review work have resulted in the gradual accumulation of a large number of unpublished manuscripts and limited-circulation reports, now on file with the division's Archaeology Branch. Additional archaeological reports such as dissertations and theses have been added from time to time to aid in state-supported surveys, excavations, and reviews. The growth of this file of information has been especially rapid since the increase of archaeological work carried out for the purpose of compliance with laws governing the environmental impacts of government-supported or regulated projects. Each month the Archaeology Branch receives an average of six reports on the archaeological impacts of ground-disturbing activities. These reports represent a wide variety of research interests, survey styles, analytical techniques, and formats. They range from major river basin studies covering several counties to reports of surveys on one-acre plots of land. Many of the smaller surveys report no sites and include minimal information on the culture histories or environments of the areas involved; many of the larger-scale studies include extensive inventories 2 of archaeological and historical properties as well as efforts at synthesizing local culture histories, extrapolating settle ment patterns, or outlining environmental features for studies of cultural ecology. The Guide to Resea~ch Pape~s in the A~chaeology of No~th Ca~olina on File with the A~chaeology Branch of the No~th Ca~olina Division of A~chives and History has been compiled to provide a comprehensive list of these papers to those practicing archaeology in North Carolina. Most of the papers listed in this volume have never been published or have appeared as technical publications with limited distri butions. Since this guide is devoted to largely uncirculated archaeological reports, it omits most of the references to more available, published works on archaeology and ethnohistory in North Carolina which are cited in previously published biblio graphies (e.g., Phelps 1974; Murdock and O'Leary 1975; Rouse and Goggin 1947; Stevenson 1975; Moeller and Reid 1977). No attempt was made to duplicate the entries in these bibliographies, although some overlapping has occurred. In each citation the editor has attempted to include the name of the institution or agency that performed the work de scribed in the report. When a performing agency is not listed in the report, the sponsoring or contracting agency (if known) is listed in its place. This reference is intended to supply the researcher with the information needed to contact directly the individuals or the institutions that have on file not only the manuscript cited, but also (presumably) the notes, photographs, and artifacts produced by the project in question. In most cases a researcher interested in past work in a particular area will not need to refer to the Archaeology Branch files. This bibliography uses the format prescribed by Amenca'l Antiquity (Style Guide for Amencan Antiquity 1979). The body of the list has been arranged alphabetically by the first author listed in the report, or by principal investigator or sponsor ing institution if no author was listed on the Archaeology Branch copy. An index of works arranged by county follows the author index. The numbers listed next to each county refer to the numbers found to the right of each title in the author index. Style variants such as the spellings =cheology and =chaeology have been maintained. To prevent redundancy, the addresses of most of the contributing organizations have been abbreviated in individual entries. A list of these organizations appears in the appendix. Where report titles do not mention the North Carolina counties involved, county names have been added in brackets. 3 \ Moeller, Roger W., and John Reid 1977 Archaeological bibliography for eastern North America.
