This year the Holy Family was cele- brated this past Friday and next Monday, the 9th, is the feast of Jesus’ Baptism. Weekly Readings Our Advent was longer than usual, and the Christmas season is a bit shorter than usual. Again, I hope and pray that everyone is having a wonderful Christmas. I also thank all of those who have made this season as special as it has been. I start by thanking all of those who so beautifully decorated our church. It truly captures the radiance of what we are celebrating. Eileen Chiama heads up that effort as our sacristan. Week after week she is here to make sure all is well in the sacristy and sanctuary. She is tireless in her efforts, or so it seems, and is a real blessing to us clergy. I thank her and her team of volunteers. The church The Solemnity of Mary, the is stunning! Holy Mother of God In addition I want to thank Emily Mason and the crew of musicians who support her. The Advent/Christmas concert two weeks ago was outstand- Sunday ing as was the music at all of our Christmas Masses last weekend. Midnight Nm 6:22-27; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21 Mass was exceptionally remarkable with its music, but I am very grateful for all of those who helped with all the different Masses last weekend. The chil- Monday dren’s choir did a wonderful job at the 4:00 pm Mass on Christmas Eve. I also 1 Jn 2:22-28; Jn 1:19-28 thank our altar boys, our lectors, our ushers, our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, our money counters, the Knights of Columbus who helped Tuesday with parking on Christmas Eve, as well as the church office and maintenance 1 Jn 2:29—3:6; Jn 1:29-34 staffs. I do want to express my gratitude to Fr. Isenberg and Deacon Ochenkowski for all they did last weekend. Lastly, I thank anyone whom I may Wednesday have missed that helped in any way with all that has happened these past few weeks, including Lucy Smith, who brought up the Baby Jesus at Midnight 1 Jn 3:7-10; Jn 1:35-42 Mass. There is nothing like seeing a young girl placing the Infant King into the crèche. To all of you, thank you! Thursday 1 Jn 3:11-21; Jn 1:43-51 I furthermore want to thank all of you who simply participated at any of the recent liturgical events. Thank you for your prayerfulness, your faith, First Friday your dedication to the Church and to this parish. I’m also grateful for all of you who gave us priests Christmas cards and greetings as well as the gifts of fruit, 1 Jn 5:5-13; Mk 1:7-11 or cookies, other baked goods, candy, and other foods. We certainly appreciate the prayers, , Masses, etc. that you offered or had offered for us. No doubt First Saturday you are very generous for which we are tremendously grateful. 1 Jn 5:14-21; Jn 2:1-11 As you read this I am in Wisconsin with my family. I return on Tues- day when Fr. What is The ? Devotion to the , as we know it, began about the year 1672. On repeated occasions, Jesus appeared to Saint , a Visitation nun, in France, and during these apparitions, he explained to her the devotion to His Sacred Heart as He wanted people to practice it. When the Catholic Church approved the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, she did not base her action only on the visions of Saint Margaret Mary. The Church approved the devotion on its own merits.

12 Promises of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 2. I will give peace in their families. 3. I will console them in all their troubles. 4. I will be their refuge in life and especially in death. 5. I will abundantly bless all their undertakings. 6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy. 7. Tepid souls shall become fervent. 8. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection. 9. I will bless those places wherein the image of my Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated. 10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts. 11. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart. 12. In the excess of the mercy of my heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

How to complete the First Friday Devotion (1) Receive Holy Communion on each First Friday; (2) The nine Fridays must be consecutive; (3) They must be made in honor and in reparation to His Sacred Heart.

With regard to this promise it may be remarked:  That our Lord does not say that those who make the nine Fridays will be dispensed from any of their obligations or from exercising the vigilance necessary to lead a good life and overcome temptation; rather He implicitly promises abundant graces to those who make the nine Fridays to help them to carry out these obligations and persevere to the end;  That perseverance in receiving Holy Communion for nine consecutive First Fridays helps the faithful to acquire the habit of frequent Communion, which our Lord eagerly desires; and  That the practice of the nine Fridays is very pleasing to our Lord since He promises such great reward, and that all Catholics should endeavor to make the nine Fridays.
