18th VALENCIA INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION “ITURBI PRIZE” 2013

Valencia’s provincial council, the Diputación de Valencia, organizes –jointly with other organisations- the 18th Valencia International Piano Competition, the “Iturbi Prize”, so named to honour the memory of the illustrious Valencian pianist. The Competition will take place from 16th to 28th September, 2013.

COMPETITION RULES

PARTICIPANTS

Pianists of any nationality who will not have reached their 31st birthday by the time of the Final Stage may take part. The deadline for applications closes on 15th June, 2013. All applications should be sent, along with all the required documents which are listed below, to:

No candidate who has won the First Prize at previous editions of the Competition will be allowed to take part. Competitors should enclose the following with their application: a) A typewritten CV detailing academic and artistic qualifications and awards, along with all such official and private documents which may be deemed of interest (international prizes, reviews, recordings published, etc.) and two letters of recommendation from figures from the music world (including their telephone numbers). b) A birth certificate, or other official documents, in which the date of birth and nationality of the participant is specified. c) Three passport photographs, and one postcard-sized photograph (9 x 11cm). d) Full address and telephone number, as well as a permanent contact address. e) The completed application form (enclosed), indicating which works will be played for each stage of the Competition and the approximate duration of these. If the programme were to overrun the allotted time, the Competition Advisory Committee will decide which works or fragments of these will be played. f) Receipt demonstrating that the registration fee has been paid. The fee is 50 euros and this should be paid to the Banco de Valencia (Urbana 12), Plaza de la Virgen, nº 4, E-46003 VALENCIA (Spain). Based on the documentation received, the Advisory Committee will select the candidates and will contact them in good time before the Competition. If any document is later found to be fake, the admission of that candidate will automatically be cancelled.

COMPETITION STAGES

The Competition will consist of FOUR stages: the First Stage, the Second Stage, the Semi-Final and the Final. All the semi-finalists will receive a commemorative DIPLOMA.

FIRST STAGE: I Maximum duration: 30 minutes. Every competitor must play: a) A sonata by either SCARLATTI or SOLER. b) CHOPIN. Two of the following works: Impromptus, Nocturnes or Mazurkas. c) A work or group of works by: FAURÉ, DEBUSSY or RAVEL. d) An important work of music written for the piano, freely chosen by the candidate.

SECOND STAGE: II Maximum duration: 40 minutes. Every competitor must play: a) A sonata or variations by one of the following composers: HAYDN, MOZART, BEETHOVEN or SCHUBERT. b) CHOPIN: An étude. c) One of the following: ALBENIZ: A work from "Iberia", including "Navarra" or "La Vega", or GRANADOS: A work from “Goyescas” or “El Pelele”, or FALLA: "Fantasía Bética" or “Cuatro Piezas Españolas” (only two pieces from the latter)

MC Page 2 of 10 SEMI-FINAL A recital of a maximum of 55 minutes, which must include: a) A musically important romantic work written for the piano. b) The work “Preludio al gallo mañanero”, by Joaquín Rodrigo.

FINAL

The competitors will be accompanied by an orchestra. This stage will consist of two parts: A) The SIX competitors selected will play one of the following concertos:

B) The jury will select THREE of the competitors from the previous SIX, and they will play one of the following concertos:

- MOZART: . K.449 in E-flat major . K.453 in G major . K.466 in D minor . K.467 in C major . K.482 in E-flat major . K.488 in A major . K.503 in C major . K.595 in B-flat major - CHOPIN: . Concerto nº 1 in E minor . Concerto nº 2 in F minor

- SCHUMANN: . Concerto in A minor

- LISZT: . Concerto nº 1 in E-flat major

Competitors must state which concerto they will perform in sections a) & b) when making their application to the Competition.

Changes to the requested programme will only be accepted up to 30th June 2013.

AWARDS CEREMONY

The Awards Ceremony will take place on 28th September 2013, at a recital in which all competition winners must take part.

They will play one of the works they previously performed during the stages of the competition and which will be selected by the Competition management.

PRIZES

FIRST PRIZE:

MC Page 4 of 10 18000 euros donated by the Diputación de Valencia, publication of a CD, and a series of recitals and concerts: Orquesta de Valencia, Sociedad Filarmónica de Valencia, Academia de España in Rome, presentation in Madrid, etc…

SECOND PRIZE: 12000 euros donated by the Diputación de Valencia, and recitals sponsored by the Generalitat Valenciana’s (Valencian regional government’s).

THIRD PRIZE: 6000 euros donated by the Diputación de Valencia, and recitals sponsored by the same body.

FOURTH PRIZE: 4000 euros donated by Bancaja.

FIFTH PRIZE: 3000 euros donated by the Ayuntamiento de Valencia, Valencia city council.

SIXTH PRIZE: 1900 euros donated by the Sociedad Filarmónica de Valencia

SPECIAL PRIZES

"KAWAI" PRIZE: 1500 euros donated by Kawai-España, for the best-placed Spanish competitor.

YAMAHA MÚSICA IBÉRICA S.A.U. PRIZE: 1500 euros donated by Yamaha Música Ibérica S.A.U for the best performer of Contemporary Spanish Music.

CLEMENTE PIANOS PRIZE: 1500 euros donated by Clemente Pianos, to the best soloist accompanied by an orchestra.

PRIZE FOUNDED BY MS HEIDE WOLF: 1500 euros for the best performance of a work by Chopin.

DIPUTACIÓN DE VALENCIA PRIZE: “BEST PERFORMER OF SPANISH MUSIC” 1500 euros donated by the Diputación de Valencia.

“BANCAJA” PRIZE 1500 euros, for the best-placed Valencian performer.

MC Page 5 of 10 If the Jury were to make a joint award of a prize, the relevant amount would be divided between the recipients. JURY

The naming of the Jury is the responsibility of the Diputación Provincial de Valencia, and it will be made up of prestigious Spanish and foreign musicians.

Once the Competition is underway, the Jury will be responsible for dealing with any disputes arising from the interpretation of these Rules. The decisions of the Jury, including the awarding of the Prizes, are final. In those cases where there is doubt surrounding the interpretation of these rules, the Spanish text shall prevail.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

All of the works must be performed from memory.

Pianists who are resident in Spain will each be awarded travel expenses of 190 euros, while those living abroad will each receive 370 euros. These expenses will be awarded to those competitors who pass the First Stage. The Jury may choose not to award one or more of the Prizes detailed in these Rules, if they judge that the participants do not meet the required standard. The order in which the competitors perform will be established by lot on 30th August, 2013, at the offices of the Diputación Provincial de Valencia. The 18th Valencia International Piano Competition, the "ITURBI PRIZE", retains all rights for radio, TV and internet broadcasting and audio and video recording of the different Competition stages, as well as the right to record a Compact Disc for the Competition Winner. Participation in the 18th Valencia International Piano Competition, the "ITURBI PRIZE", implies the complete acceptance of these Rules.
