MINUTES OF MEMBERSHIP MEETING

March 13, 2013 – 12:00 PM

1.  Welcome: Mr. Jackson Norton, President of WNCMMA, opened the meeting at 12:05 PM, welcomed attendees and asked members present to introduce their guests.

2.  Approval of Minutes and Treasurer’s Report: Mr. Norton asked for approval of the minutes of the membership meeting of January 8, 2012 and Treasurer’s Report, both of which were provided for members in advance of today’s meeting. Members initiated first and second motions to approve both reports “as is.”

3.  Website Update: Natalie Woodruff announced that the website is now online and that all members should receive an email to link to the site. They can then register and create a user name and password. She mentioned the many things that we can accomplish while using the site as well as viewing past minutes and presentations.

4.  Introduction of Sponsor: Mr. McLane introduced the sponsor for today’s meeting, Johnson, Price and Sprinkle, PA. Since its founding more than 50 years ago, JPS has served clients with a steady focus on superior client service. In recent years, JPS has expanded its team, further sealing its status as one of the largest full-service firms in the region. In 2004, JPS merged with Asheville-based Hughes, Hughes & Co. and folded the firm of L. Clement Hahn, Jr. CPA PA into its team. In 2009, the firm integrated the Boone office of Dixon Hughes, PLLC into its practice. 5.  Introduction of Speaker: Mr. McLane introduced Mary Williams Matthews who joined the JPS team in 1993 becoming a shareholder in 1999. Mary is a certified public accountant with over 30 years of experience in serving the needs of professional services practices. She has earned the designation of Certified Medical Practice Executive from the Medical Group Management Association. Her primary industry focus is healthcare, concentrating on tax advisory and compliance services and consulting expertise to physician and dental practices, as well as other ancillary healthcare entities. Her presentation today is “After the Fiscal Cliff – The Tax Landscape for 2013 and Beyond.” She discussed, Income Taxes: Explaining how different types of taxes changed with The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 and who the changes will affect. She gave the attendees an understanding of the tax breaks that were extended (and those that went away) by the Act. Discussed the current status health care reform as it relates to employer responsibilities in 2013 and future years. Provided an update on the North Carolina legislature’s attempts to modernize the state’s tax system and why physician practices should care.

6.  Announcements: Mr. Norton announced the next meeting is scheduled for May 14th, 2013. Also pleas come to the Spring Social on Tuesday, April 23rd from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. You are welcome to bring a guest or coworker. Mr. McLane announced that the speaker for the next meeting is Dixon Hughes Goodman and the topic is to be announced. Terry also mentioned how well the officers work together but would especially like to thank Natalie Woodruff for her outstanding work on the website. Terry Roberts announced a pilot program by MAHEC called “Ramp up”- Reengineering Academy for Medical Practices. There will be several Cohorts to teach advanced clinical practices of the 7 disease states to all staff whether CNA, or RN and any one in between. Evan and Terry will come into practices to follow up. This is a program that aspires to go nationwide. They will cover Anatomy, physiology, evidence base medicine and advanced topics. It begins on March 21st. There will be a training session for PQRS held at MAHEC April 9, 2013. Also Ms. Roberts announced ICD9 Certification at MAHEC’s on June 24th through June 28th.

7.  Drawing: Johnson, Price and Sprinkle provided a drawing for an Apple TV. Nikki Daves won the prize!

8.  Closing: There being no further business, Mr. Norton closed the meeting at 1: 24 PM.
