Curriculum

LANGUAGE ARTS: In Language Arts we will continue to work with Trapped By Ice, by McCurdy. Discussing the retelling of Sir Ernest

Shackleton's famous expedition and voyage to Antarctica. With this story we will cover possessive pronouns (its vs. it’s), comprehension, summarizing, and text organization, (captions, headings, subheadings), and how to make and follow a timeline.

MATH: We will be starting Unit 11: Exploring Division and Relating Division to Multiplication. In this unit, the students will explore the concept of partitioning and delve deeper in relating division to multiplication. Students will be using multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays and measurement quantities. In addition, they will be determining the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers.

WRITING: The students will be taking an opinion writing test this week. At this time the children only need to write a paragraph expressing their opinion. They will continue learning how to form an opinion and then use facts to try and persuade their audience to join them in their beliefs. They will also be practicing hooking their reader and leaving them thinking as they try to develop creative introductions and conclusions for their persuasive speeches. The end of the year product will be a 5-paragraph essay containing an introductory paragraph, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will continue to embark on our new unit pertaining to the United States Government. Learning about the structure and branches of our local, state, and federal government.

SCIENCE: In science we will continue to study topics within Life Science. In particular the ways

living-things survive in their

environment.
