Unit At the Airport

Programme Outline The Airport Challenge is a reality TV game show in which contestants compete to be the first group to board on a plane. The contestants who are 10 – 12 years old kids need to work out how to process information like reading an air ticket, understanding signs and following rules, etc. The Challenge not only tests the contestants their interpretative skills, but also their ability to work with their partner as a team and their patience and wisdom to overcome problems. Let’s enjoy the show and see what obstacles the two teams face and who the winner is.

Learning Targets To develop an ever-improving capability to use English - to provide or find out, organise and present information on familiar topics (K.S. a) - to interpret and use simple given information through processes or activities such as describing and to follow simple instructions (K.S. b)

Learning Objectives 1. Learn about the vocabulary related to boarding on a plane, e.g. boarding pass, check-in, boarding gate, departure, etc. 2. Learn about the process of boarding on a plane 3. Learn about the importance and skills of reading and processing information, problem- solving and other related skills 4. Learn how to recognize and read the signs displayed at the airport

Communicative Functions 1. Describe simple processes, situations and conditions 2. Describe the manner and frequency with which people carry out actions, and the purposes and results of these actions

Suggested Activities 1. Motivate the class by asking them whether they have been flying on a plane or not. For pupils that have been on a flight, ask them to talk briefly about their trip, where they went to, which airline they took and how they felt to board on a plane. For the rest of the class, teachers can brainstorm them on what they need to take to the airport. Suggested answers may include air tickets, passports, ID Cards, luggage, money, etc.

2. Introduce to the pupils the programme outline. Explain to them that they are going to watch a TV game show in which the contestants need to board on a plane by themselves. Introduce to the pupils key words like air tickets, check-in, passports, flight, departure, boarding pass, etc.

3. Explain to the pupils that the contestants in the programme are going to face some obstacles and make some mistakes in the contest. Ask the pupils to note what mistakes they have made. Give out Copymaster 1 before viewing the programme. Ask the pupils to complete Part 1a and Part 1b while they are watching the programme.

4. In Part1c, pupils need to reflect on the mistakes made by Team B. They can discuss with their classmates some of the possible answers. Suggested answers may include: They did not check the time. They spent so much time shopping. They did not read the information carefully.

5. In Copymaster 2, Part 2a, pupils need to study the pictures and sequence the events that the contestants go through. Answers for Part 2b, 1) air tickets; 2) check-in counter; 3) passports; 4) boarding pass 5) boarding gate.

6. In Part 3, pupils are required to read the information on the boarding pass carefully.
