The Design, Build, Fly (DBF) contest is co-sponsored by the DETC, the Applied Aerodynamics, Aircraft Design, and Flight Test Technical Committees, and the AIAA Foundation. The contest provides a real-world aircraft design experience for engineering students by giving them the opportunity to validate their analytical studies. The DETC awards a Best Paper Award for the team that submits the highest-scoring paper and also provides ten copies of the DETC’s Aerospace Design Engineers Guide to the top ten teams.

This year’s competition is to design a tube-launch UAV. The UAV must fit inside the launch tube, which also acts as the UAV handling and storage container. The flyoff competition will take place April 20-23, 2017. The flyoff competition consists of three missions with varying quantities of regulation hockey puck payloads. The final scores are based on a combination of the formal report score and scores earned for the three flight missions and ground mission.

Aviation 2016 Session Winner

The DETC hosted one technical session at the 2016 AIAA Aviation Forum held June 13th through 17th in Washington, D.C. The single session held was titled Design Engineering. DETC members were on hand at the session to judge the presentations and select a best paper winner. The presenters were judged based on several criteria including knowledge of subject, ability to answer questions, and presentation style.

All six scheduled participants presented in a session that was well attended. The award winner was Jesse Quinlan from NASA Langley Research Center for his work titled Optimization of Advanced Hybrid Wing Body Concept using HCDstruct Version 2.0. He was presented a copy of the sixth edition of the AIAA Aerospace Design Engineers Guide.
