Title How to write a research paper in English and get it published?

Date: May 30-June 2, 2017 Location: AB 1079 (lecture), CC 1095 (workshop), Duke Kunshan University

Introduction This is an intensive writing workshop aiming to improve proficiency of writing and publishing research papers among young researchers working in the global health field. It will take place at Duke Kunshan University and consists of two parts: general lectures for one day and hands-on training for three days. The general lectures will be open to around 100 interested audiences and will cover topics on manuscript writing and publishing skills (May 30, the first day of the workshop). The hands-on training will last for 3 days (May 31, June 1 and June 2) and will be open only to up to 15 participants. This part will include master classes, group revisions, and one-on-one mentoring. The master classes will introduce practical writing skills by sections in a typical academic paper: introduction, methodology, results and discussion. Group revisions follow the master class to discuss and critique the examples from trainees on specific section in small groups (3-4 persons per group). One-on-one mentoring will be provided by the four instructors to give tailored suggestions to each trainee.

Global Health Research Center of Duke Kunshan University, chair institution of the CCUGH, is responsible for the design and organization of workshop’s technical program.

Instructors’ bios Gavin Yamey, MD, MPH, Professor of the Practice of Global Health, Duke Global Health Institute and Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University

Dr. Yamey has around 15 years of experience in medical editing. He was trained in clinical medicine at Oxford University and University College London, medical journalism and editing at the BMJ and public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He was Deputy Editor of the Western Journal of Medicine, Assistant Editor at the BMJ, a founding Senior Editor of PLOS Medicine, and the Principal Investigator on a $1.1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the launch of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Dr. Yamey serves on two international health commissions, the Lancet Commission on Investing in Health and the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. He has been an External Advisor to the WHO and to TDR, the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases. Dr. Yamey has published extensively on global health, neglected diseases, health policy, and disparities in health and has been a frequent commentator on National Public Radio.

Lijing Yan, PhD, MPH, Associate Research Professor, Duke Global Health Institute, and Head of Non- communicable Disease Research, Global Health Research Center, Duke Kunshan University

Prof. Yan has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Peking University, a master of public health degree and a doctoral degree in Demography from the University of California, Berkeley. Her main areas of research are chronic disease prevention and control (hypertension, heart disease, and stroke in particular), health innovation and health systems research. She is the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on a number of NHLBI-funded and China-funded research grants. She has published dozens of peer-reviewed scientific papers some of which in leading medical journals such as JAMA, Circulation, and Archives of Internal Medicine.

Keith Dear, MA, MSc, PhD, Research Professor, Duke University and Duke Kunshan University

Prof. Dear's disciplinary background is in biostatistics, especially as applied to clinical trials, environmental epidemiology, and health impact assessment and projection. His current research focuses on global environmental health, especially air quality and vector-borne disease in relation to climate change. He is an associate editor of Environmental Health Perspectives and a contributing author in Working Group II of the IPCC. He has published dozens of peer- reviewed papers on high-impact journals such as the Lancet, Neurology etc. Edie Allen, MA Graduate Communications, Duke University; Language and Culture Center, Duke Kunshan University;

Prof. Allen has a B.A. in International Studies and a M.A. in Linguistics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has taught English to international graduate students for the past 16 years and served as the Assistant Director of the Duke Graduate School’s English for International Students program before accepting a 2-year appointment at Duke Kunshan University. She is currently teaching graduate academic writing and working individually with Global Health writers on policy briefs, theses and journal articles. She is an active member of the Consortium of Graduate Communication and conducts writing workshops and presentations on topics in graduate communications. Her primary research and teaching interests focus on the genres and literacy practices of graduate school and the creation of graduate support programming.

Registration The general lectures are open to all participants who are interested in attending. Participants from non-CCUGH member universities are also encouraged to apply. We will prioritize researchers from the member universities of CCUGH; however, non-CCUGH member universities are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must have an English manuscript draft to be submitted or a paper rejected by a journal to be re-submitted, and agree to be open to comments by instructors and peers. The workshop does not charge any registration fee to all participants. Participants are responsible for their own travel and living expenses to/in Kunshan, Jiangsu.

Logistics The 15 admitted trainees of the writing workshop will be guaranteed with hotel rooms in Conference Center at the Duke Kunshan University ( https://dukekunshan.edu.cn/en/campus/conference-center ). Note that the Conference Center CANNOT issue Fapiao titled with “住宿费”, but “会议费/会务费” only. For those who need Fapiao titled with “住宿费”, please indicate it when get registered and we will help you book rooms outside of campus. Attendants of the first-day general lecture, you are encouraged to live outside of campus if you need to live in Kunshan. Both workshop trainees and lecture attendants are responsible for their own living expenses.
