SHARP® UNVEILS NEW SOLAR-POWERED OUTDOOR LED LIGHTS

38 Watt Solar Powered Exterior Light Emits No CO2

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 12, 2010 – Sharp Electronics Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Japan’s Sharp Corporation, today unveils the company’s first off-grid solar powered light fixture at Solar Power International in Los Angeles. The light works by storing electricity generated by sunlight during the day in storage batteries to provide LED light at night. The fully solar-powered outdoor light will help eliminate the negative environmental impact of lighting around schools, public parks, corporate campuses and commercial establishments. The outdoor solar light was developed, designed and manufactured at Sharp’s manufacturing facility in Memphis, Tennessee. It comes as an all-in-one kit, ready to install, and assembles in about 45 minutes. The LED light is available at a low price point and requires no costly trenching, underground wiring, transformers and no monthly utility bills. Each fixture is constructed with aluminum alloy and stainless steel and equipped with two LED light fixtures covered with a polycarbonate lens with only 19W of power consumption each. “This product combines two of Sharp’s core competencies - LED lighting and solar power,” said Chris Lewis, associate Vice President, Sharp Electronics Corporation. “We’re excited about adding this efficient outdoor light to our growing portfolio of energy creating / energy saving products. Not only will it help facilities with large outdoor spaces lower electricity and construction costs, it will ultimately help them reduce CO2 emissions and lower their carbon footprint as well.” The LED light utilizes Sharp’s polycrystalline silicon cell modules, with breakthrough technology made possible by nearly 50 years of proprietary research and development. There are no moving parts to wear out and Sharp solar modules are covered under limited warranty for power output for 25 years, making the lights virtually worry-free. The Sharp LN-S2R5FWRCAY00 boasts 40,000 hour service life and can withstand wind gusts of up to 135 mph. In Standard mode, the fixtures can run without a battery recharge for up to five days. Beginning at dusk, the light provides 50 percent of the maximum lumens. At one hour past dusk, it boosts to 100 percent lumen illumination for five hours, then reverts to 50 percent lumens for another hour and finally lowers its output to 14% until dawn, when traffic is low. It has been more than 50 years since Sharp first started researching solar cells. Over this long period of time, solar cells made by Sharp have been used not only in residential and industrial applications, but also on lighthouses and satellites, thus proving their long-term reliability.
