Summary

  1. The schedule stays much the same as 2015-16 including:
  2. Flex blocks will fall on every third day as is the case this year
  3. The flex schedule will begin just after the 2nd week of the semester
  4. Flex classes will be held for 4 consecutive days prior to exams
  1. The schedule changes include:
  2. There is a morning break between Period 1 and the Flex block
  3. The length of classes has been adjusted accordingly
  4. The inclusion of a Flex Group that will appear on each teacher’s schedule in PowerSchool with a certain number of students assigned to each teacher.

Total instructional
128 Regular days
@ 328 min/day / Total instructional 56 flex days @ 322 minutes/day / Total amount of prep time
(assuming 3 credit prep each semester) / Net instructional time/teacher
699.7 hrs/year / 300.5hrs/year / 117.33hrs/year / 882.87hrs/yr

Rationale:

  1. We need to do a better job of identifying and focusing our interventions within the CRM Model
  2. We need to meet more frequently. This schedule, with only academic focus will allow more frequent meetings to discuss students
  3. Our CRM teams were too broad. In too many cases, the adults had no association with the students that were being discussed. By assigning students to a Flex Group teacher the CRM meetings should be more productive since there is an adult has been assigned to assist and monitor a specific group of students that will be discussed at the CRM meeting.
  4. The format will also allow for better follow-up on any actions that emerge from the CRM meetings.
  5. We can use the Flex group time to track and monitor progress of our assigned students
  6. We can counsel them and assist them in the course selection / registration process
  7. We can work with these students to manage/teach how to use MyBlueprintto their advantage

Flex Group duties:

  1. The duties of the Flex Group teacher include:
  2. Take attendance (in PowerSchool) at the beginning of the Flex period
  3. Ensure that students have signed up for a flex class (using the Flex Block Scheduler in PowerSchool)
  4. Monitoring the academic progress of the students in your flex group.
  5. Counsel students to make priorities of classes they may be behind in or are failing
  6. Provide input about your flex group students to the CRM meetings.
  1. Other items :
  2. Students should not be assigned to the library unless their subject teacher (not the TA) has a specific task that requires the use of a library (see below)
  3. Students should not be assigned to the computer rooms unless their subject teacher (not the Teacher Advisor has a specific task that requires the use of a computer room.
  4. Students may sign up to use the gym / weight room if there is a P. Ed teacher there to supervise. Note: there is a cap on numbers so advance sign-up is important.
  5. Teaching Assistants will be assigned to computer rooms for student support/ supervision
  6. Honouring Student’s ability to make choice: There will be students who are indeed doing well in their classes and may not wish to attend any tutorial or supported learning on a given flex block day. My thinking is that in some cases we have to be willing to entrust students to a degree that they know best what they need whether that is down time or some form of stress relief. In these cases, as long as you know where the student is, I am ok with that. For example, if a student is caught up in all their classes, they could be allowed to go to the library with the permission of their Teacher Advisor.
  7. Absences– some students will have spares before or after the TA block. In those cases, they don’t need to be in a flex block unless they have been found to be falling behind in classes in which case these students must check in with their Teacher Advisor. In those cases, the teacher advisor must work with the teacher to ensure these students are getting their work done in flex blocks or spares.
