An exciting Permanent Full-Time opportunity as a Clinical Manager, Urgent Operating Room and Surgical Clinics exists in the Surgical Program, reporting to the Clinical Director.

The Clinical Manager of the Urgent Operating Room and Surgical Clinics will have day-to-day operational responsibility for the OR and Surgical Clinics.

The Clinical Manager will embrace the vision and mission of Women’s College Hospital and translate this to the Health Care Team through the application of knowledge in women’s health research and surgical care. The Clinical Manager will also work with the Clinical Director and the Chiefs of Surgery and Anesthesia to implement the vision for acute care services, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

The Clinical Manager will serve as the inspirational leader for her/his team. S/he will have extensive experience in Perioperative Leadership. S/he will demonstrate an approachable leadership style that is adaptable to the internal and external changes that impact the unit. She/he will therefore demonstrate leadership competencies in interpersonal communication, customer service, diversity management, conflict management, human resource management, interpersonal skills, negotiation and influence, self-management, teaching others, career specific expertise and teamwork. The Clinical Manager’s leadership must also include experience in change management and understanding the human side of change.

The following defines the specific accountabilities of the role:

·  Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, to plan and co-ordinate the implementation of new programs and services with outcomes focused on excellence in patient care and fiscal responsibilities.

·  Lead and focus the Health Care Teams’ efforts to develop a plan to identify, monitor and minimize high risk situations to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.

·  Act as a role model/mentor to unit staff and ensure compliance with professional standards, e.g., College of Nurses of Ontario.

·  Maintain an organizational climate which promotes staff development, education, achievement, research and professionalism and working in collaboration with the Nurse Educator; develop staff in-service and continuing education sessions.

·  Strategically plan, implement and evaluate new and existing program developments consistent with WCH vision and priorities.

·  Establish process to incorporate customer feedback as part of the annual staff performance review, and meet with staff annually to review performance and set annual objectives.

·  Consult with internal and external stakeholders to identify needs and develop a plan of action to ensure that expectation can be met.

·  Ensure a continuous focus on patient experience improvement by developing an open process to respond to patient care issues that includes participation of the Health Care Team.

·  Nurture and cultivate community linkages / partnerships to support patient care and meet the mission and vision of WCH.

·  Develop data gathering that is meaningful for interpretation in order to provide accurate information monitoring and program decisions and potential research initiatives.

·  Maintain close working relations with other departments for joint decision making and problem solving.

·  Manage human resources; staff appropriately to provide cost effective and productive use of human resources within approved staffing budget; facilitate communication and problem solving between all members of the Health Care Team; scheduling of staff; assessment and evaluation of staffing requirements; identify performance management issues and develop action plans to correct and then counsel personnel as necessary, providing guidance regarding roles and responsibilities.

·  Provide the leadership necessary to coordinate the activities of all staff including nursing, physicians, housekeeping and clerical to ensure that patient satisfaction and safety are maintained.

·  Encourage and raise awareness among staff and physicians to participate in measures promoting fiscal responsibility with respect to resources.

·  Ensure that appropriate material resources are available for the provision of quality patient care and manage these resources with budget/contractual arrangements. Employ formal and informal networks to creatively meet the changing needs and budget targets and ensure successful operations of the unit.

·  Identify capital and operational needs.

PRIORITIES

·  In collaboration with the Health Care Team build a culture that is focused on ensuring safety and best practices and delivers the highest possible levels of patient satisfaction is a primary focus of the unit.

·  Develop strategies with the Health Care Team to improve clinical process, improve timeliness of care and patient through put.

·  Work with the Surgical Leadership team to fulfill our mandate as a free-standing academic ambulatory surgical program.

QUALIFICATIONS

·  Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.

·  The successful candidate will have solid experience in perioperative nursing with recent experience in a managerial or similar leadership role. Technically credible, the manager will be a convincing subject matter expert.

·  A relationship builder, the ideal candidate will be a coach and mentor for the perioperative staff and physicians.

·  Will have experience in leading professionals through culture transformations, as well as in gaining staff acceptance and commitment to achieve new standards of skill and service delivery.

·  The ideal candidate will be an inspirational leader with a high degree of comfort in providing clinical leadership and developing, in their professional staff, a willingness to engage in continuous clinical skill improvement.

·  Must be proactive with fresh creative thinking on the development and application of clinical process and improvement patient through put, while maintaining/enhancing patient satisfaction.

·  The ideal individual will be driven, capable of working autonomously and comfortable with both the newness of the role and task ambiguity.

·  Must have excellent presentation/facilitation skills; influencing and negotiating skills are also coveted. She/he must be a relationship builder.

·  Must be well organized and able to multi-task.

·  Conversant with the emerging trends in Surgical Care, must be able to translate concept into process and practical application.

·  Innovative and a good project manager.

·  Must possess excellent oral and written communications skills – can effectively articulate ideas and technical information to a broad range of audiences.

·  The ideal candidate will have her/his Bachelor of Science Nursing degree and will be a Master’s Degree candidate.
