CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT POLICY & PROCEDURES

General Policy Statement

In order to maintain quality and provide adequate supervision, graduate students are expected to maintain continuous enrollment until award of the degree. Maintaining continuous enrollment assures the student's right to complete the study plan as previously approved, according to the "Election of Curriculum Requirements" provision of Title 5. A student who does not need to enroll in any other coursework must register for Graduate Studies 700 (GRAD 700) which carries no credit units and does not require attendance.

GRAD 700 Enrollment

Students who have completed all coursework on the study plan and are continuing to work on thesis, dissertation, project or comprehensive exam preparation have two options for registration:

1. GRAD 700 through regular registration. Students pay full fees and receive full student benefits (health center, study activities, etc.). Regular campus registration fees apply.

2.  GRAD 700 through Extended Education. Students pay a reduced fee and receive no university benefits other than library privileges. Permission to enroll through Extended Education is monitored through the Graduate Studies office with permission from the department’s Graduate Program Adviser and for International students, an Adviser in the International Programs & Global Engagement Office. No student will be permitted to enroll in GRAD 700 through Extended Education without consent from the Graduate Studies Office. Registration materials will be released through the Graduate Studies Office. Graduate Program Advisers will be sent a list of students enrolled in this special GRAD 700 option.

Payment Options for GRAD 700 through Extended Education

1. Credit card payments will be accepted online only, at the time of online registration. See registration guide for online registration deadlines. All credit card payments are subject to a 2.75% processing non-refundable fee.

2. Checks and/or cash will be accepted at the University Extended Education Office, College Park 100.

Note: GRAD 700 does not meet the loan disbursement requirement of half-time enrollment as specified for Stafford Loans, the State University Grant, and others. Enrolling in GRAD 700 may prompt loan entities to start collecting repayment 6 months after a student drops below half-time enrollment status, depending on the specific loan type. If a student is unsure about their student loan unit enrollment requirements, then it is best if they check with the specific loan entity directly before the completion of GRAD 700 enrollment to ensure an expected loan disbursement it not affected.
