OXFORD DEANERY SPECIALTY TRAINING PROGRAMME IN PSYCHIATRY

About Oxford Deanery

The Oxford Deanery covers the counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, with Banbury and Milton Keynes in the North, to Reading and Slough in Berkshire and High Wycombe and Aylesbury in the West.

The Oxford Deanery is part of NHS South of England which comprises South Central, South West and South East Coast Strategic Health Authorities. The Oxford Deanery is responsible for the training of some 1500 trainees.

The Oxford Deanery is a relatively small deanery with a defined geographical area which serves as a single unit of application. In the majority of cases successful candidates will be asked to preference their choice of location for either one or two years. Some programmes will require successful candidates to indicate a location and specialty. Future placements will usually be based on individual training and educational needs. Please note that applications are to the Oxford Deanery as a whole. This may mean that you may be allocated to any geographic location within the Oxford Deanery depending on training needs.

The Psychiatry Training Programme

The psychiatry training programme is a 3 year programme, starting at CT1. During this time, the trainee's work will be monitored for satisfactory progress and subject to annual reviews in the form of ARCPs. Progression on the programme will be dependent upon these reviews.

Clinical care will be delivered at a range of sites requiring trainees to travel effectively and efficiently to, for example: Trust sites, patient’s homes, police stations, clinics and other associated sites. Travel costs from base location to other sites will only be reimbursed for business mileage (valid insured drivers/vehicles) and journeys using all forms of public transport (including taxis) will be reimbursed at the public transport rate.

The posts on this rotation have been approved for Specialist Training by the GMC & RCPsych. The programme is designed to equip the trainee for Higher Specialist Training in their chosen specialty. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that this post has the necessary educational and staffing approvals.

The programme is based in several different Trusts throughout the Oxford Deanery so trainees may find themselves employed by any of the following Trusts and placed in any of the following hospitals/sites:

Oxford Deanery Core Training Programme in Psychiatry (Years 1- 3).

Description of the Programme The current 59 posts are provided by five NHS Trusts:

 Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust (OHFT)  Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BHFT)  Milton Keynes Community Health Services (MKCHS)  West London Mental Health Care Trust – Broadmoor Hospital (Broadmoor)  Southern Health (Learning Disability Trust covering Oxfordshire and Hampshire; previously Ridgeway Partnership)

The Programme has close links with the University of Oxford through the Department of Psychiatry based in Oxford. There are variable numbers of academic clinical fellowship placements available on the programme. Currently at CT1 level there is one post.

Further details on these training providers and the sites of training are available on their websites: www.oxfordhealth.nhs.uk; www.berkshire.nhs.uk; http://www.mkchs.nhs.uk; www.wlmht.nhs.uk. http://www.ridgeway.nhs.uk/

Trainees should be able to travel effectively and efficiently to all Trust and associated sites for work purposes.

Distribution of Workplace based learning posts across Trusts The programme is committed to the principles of workplace based learning and assessment. Workplace based learning opportunities are provided that adhere to the Royal College’s post-graduate training curriculum. These opportunities aim to provide trainees with competency specific learning outcomes addressed to their individual needs.
