WWI Portfolio Requirements

Task Your task is to examine and analyze U.S. involvement in WWI both here in the U.S. and in Europe. You will assemble your findings into a portfolio. Each question will be an individual entry. (6 entries in total)

Process 1. Use the information from your textbooks, handouts, and notes to answer the six questions on WWI. (You do not need a computer to answer the questions.) Thoroughly answer each question in complete sentences, be sure to answer all parts of the question. Each question should be a separate entry in your portfolio. 2. Collect primary documents/sources that support your answers. Explain how the primary document supports or represents your answer. This should be at least 2-3 sentences. You must have at least one document for each question. Do not use more than four of each type of document in your portfolio. For example no more than four photographs in your portfolio. (See types of documents list)

Important Dates We will be covering the information on WWI from Monday December 6th - Wednesday December 15th . I have scheduled library days for you to find documents and work on your portfolio entries. We will go to the library on Wednesday December 8th, Monday December 12th , and Tuesday December 14th . Please use your time wisely. The portfolio is due Friday Dec. 17th. I will not accept late work. Plan ahead and use class time to complete the assignment. Do not wait until Thursday to print your portfolio. (You may not print from my room on Friday)

Organization of Portfolio Your portfolio should have a cover page and a table of contents. Each question should be a separate entry in the portfolio.(6 entries) The primary document should be included with the entry/question that it supports.(6 docucments) The last entry should be your self-reflection handout. Please neatly bind your portfolio together (please no 3 ring binders).

Resources Use your notes from class and the movie as well as your textbook, map, and handouts to answer the questions. You do not need a computer to answer the questions. Use the internet to locate documents that support your answers. Evaluation The portfolio is worth 100 points and is equivalent to a test grade. Please read the rubric!!!!!!!!!!!! Questions Answer each of the following questions in complete sentences.

1. The U.S. managed to stay out of the war in Europe for three years. List the events (reasons) that pushed the U.S. to join the Allied Powers. Choose what you believe are the top three reasons why the U.S. entered the war and explain why you feel these are the most significant.

2. WWI was to be the “war to end all war” this was partly due to the “industrialization of war”. Explain the “industrialization of war”. What new technologies contributed to this new warfare? Describe the role industrialization played in WWI.

3. Analyze instances in which the rights of individuals and civil liberties were restricted (limited) or infringed during WWI. Explain how the government restricted individual citizens’ rights. Do you think the U.S. government had or has the right to restrict American rights during times of war, why or why not? 4. WWI spurred many changes here in the U.S. Analyze social, economic, and political changes during this time. Explain how business and government had to cooperate for the war effort. Describe how the government encouraged Americans to sacrifice and support the war effort.

5. The war brought many changes for Immigrants, African-Americans, and women in America. List these changes for each group. Explain how each group benefited from or was disadvantaged by these changes.

6. During this era the U.S. became more involved in world affairs. As the war progressed and came to an end the U.S. emerged as a significant world power. Trace the development of the U.S. as a world power. Explain the role Wilson’s Fourteen Points, Treaty of Versailles, and the U.S. decision not to join the League of Nations, on the U.S. status as a world power.

Types of Primary Documents Primary documents provide us with an eyewitness view at history. Primary sources are written or recorded at the time of the event from people who experienced the event. Primary documents or sources come in many forms below find a list of different types of primary sources you can use to support your answers. Remember you may not use more than 4 of each type in your portfolio.
