Negotiating Free Trade in the Hemisphere

February 20, 2002

215 Dirksen Senate Office Building

Washington, DC

On behalf of the Inter-American Development Bank and Inter-American Dialogue, we are pleased to invite you to join us for a one-day conference on Western Hemisphere trade negotiations. The conference will be held Wednesday, February 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Room 215 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Attached is a preliminary agenda for the daylong session, along with a list of confirmed speakers.

The conference will start off with a discussion of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), whether it is likely to be approved and, if it is, how the content will affect negotiations with key Latin American governments. We will then review the many international trade negotiations in which the United States and nations of Latin America and the Caribbean are involved—including FTAA, ATPA, the FTAs with Chile and Central America, and the new WTO round. We will be exploring 1) the significance of these various negotiations, (2) the progress that is being made in each negotiation and the obstacles that will have to be overcome for a successful conclusion, and (3) the cross-effects of the negotiations on one another.

We very much hope that you will be able to be with us for this important conference. Please let us know if that will be possible by returning the attached form.

Reservations are required for this event.

Sincerely,

Peter Hakim Jaime Zabludovsky
