Model Letter to Professionals About Submitting Written Advice for the Annual Review

Model letter to parents about submitting written advice for the annual review

Dear

Pupil’s name and date of birth

Each year we meet to talk about (child’s name)’s special educational needs.

Your child’s Annual Review is planned for ……..… at ……….. in school (or place).

It is important that you attend this meeting in order to review your child’s progress current provision and future plans. Please let the school know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend. You are welcome to bring a friend, relative or your Independent Parent Supporter.(IPS) Please inform the school in advance of the meeting if you are bringing a IPS in order that additional papers can be provided.

You may wish to submit written advice on (child’s name) progress in preparation for (his/her) annual review. I enclose a form for writing your advice that may be helpful, but you do not have to use this. Your advice should reach the school by ………………….. so that it can be circulated to everyone attending the meeting two weeks beforehand.

The review has to consider the following:

  • progress towards outcomes
  • the Educational Health Care (EHC) Plan and whether it remains appropriate
  • future planning

The parental advice form contains questions about these three areas for you to consider. If the school feels that your child no longer needs an EHC Plan a discussion will have been held prior to the Annual Review.Copies of reports received from professionals working with your child will be sent to you with the agenda of the meeting two weeks before the Annual Review.

You may find it helpful to discuss your child’s special educational needs with an impartial advisor. The local education authority provides impartial advice to parents through Redbridge Information, Advice and Support Service (RIASS). Their telephone number is 020 8708 8922.

Yours sincerely

Headteacher/SENCO
