Course Description

JAVA programming is a computer science course focused on programming using the JAVA language. The course begins with an introduction to software engineering. The course content then covers other pertinent programming topics including objects and classes, algorithms, JAVA syntax, data types and variables, Boolean expressions and iterative statements, strings, arrays, searching and sorting and GUI components as the basis of content. Because this course is focused on the basics of JAVA, the development of individualized and group programming projects hold a high priority for this course.

Class Rules

  1. Arrive to class on time and be prepared to work.
  2. Be respectful of your peers, teacher, and school.
  3. No inappropriate language or gestures.
  4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  5. Pay attention to the teacher’s instruction
  6. Do not touch others’ belongings without permission
  7. Do not damage school property
  8. No hall passes will be used during quizzes or test. (unless you have finished it)
  9. Items prohibited in class (and will be confiscated)
  10. Hats
  11. Cell Phones
  12. I-Pods / music playing devices
  13. Electronics
  14. Observe ALL of the rules of the Computer Lab
  15. Computers are for your use for the purpose of programming. It is NOT for you to view inappropriate / non-school related material.

Consequences of Inappropriate Behavior

  1. Verbal and documented warning
  2. Phone call to parent/guardian
  3. Detention
  4. Referral to Vice Principal

Materials

  1. Notebooks / 3 Ring Binder – must be brought to class EVERY DAY. Some students prefer to take notes on the computer.
  2. Pencils – All graded material (i.e. homework, quizzes, and tests) will be done in pencil.
  3. Flash Drive – You may work on your programming at home. Save it to your flash drive and bring it to class.

Homework Policy

  • Homework/Labs/Projects will be given and checked on a regular basis.
  • All assignments will be completed on time, with ALL WORK SHOWN and all problems attempted.
  • If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the notes and homework from a fellow classmate.
  • If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, the assignment shall be turned in on the day you return to class.
  • Periodically, homework will be collected and graded.

Grading Policy

The final grade in this course will be determined by a point system. Each assignment / assessment will carry a certain amount of points. The final grade will be the points earned divided by total possible points.

Class Participation is expected. Participation include answering/attempting to answer a question, asking questions, volunteering to show work on the board, and participating in class discussion.

Late Assignments

Assignments that are to be graded must be handed in on time or it shall be considered late. Handing in the assignment one day late will result in a maximum of 50% of points earned. Assignments handed in two days or later will be considered incomplete and will result in 0 points earned. It is important to do and turn in ALL assignments given. Late assessments are subjected to zero grade after a week has passed.

Makeup Tests/Quizzes

It is the student’s responsibility of informing me when you would like to make up a missed quiz and/or test. All students have one week after a quiz or test is given to make up the missing quiz or test. All quizzes or tests not taken within a week after it is given will result in a zero. Special circumstances may be given if communication is made with me as to why you cannot make up the quiz or test within the week.

No Cheating Policy

There is a no tolerance cheating policy, this includes ALL programs, assignments, and assessments. You are encouraged to work together on homework and studying, but this does not mean you may copy answers from each other. Any student caught cheating will automatically receive a zero on the assignment, test, or quiz and further consequences may be taken, including a referral to the vice principal.

Attendance

In accordance with school policy, it is mandatory for students to arrive to class ON TIME. Detentions WILL be given to those who arrive late to class without a pass. It is unacceptable to be late or miss class to make up work for another teacher. That is what study hall is reserved for. Any class period you are not in the room shall count as an absence and will be recorded.

If you know in advance that you will be absent on a particular day for whatever reason, please see me as soon as possible so that I may give you the material that will be missed.

Detention Policy

Detentions will be held with me after school. You must arrive by 2:45PM and must be working on math assignments or other assignments given by me until 4:00PM. Failure to show up to detention will result in an additional day of detention and a referral to the Vice Principal.

Tutoring

Tutoring and extra help will be available after school on Wednesdays after school in Room 5. Extra help after school on other days may be arranged by making an appointment with me.
