KS1 Topic: Carnival of the Animals Block F: Fish

Learn about fish, research their life cycles and habitats and make your own aquarium with fish and underwater plants! Create a pattern of movements to develop a dance and compose and plan the dance story for a performance. Create fish puppets, props and a back drop; make and write invitations and finally perform your imaginative dance story and wait for the compliments!

By the end of this block you will have achieved the following outcomes: / ·  Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
·  Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets).
·  Name and locate the world’s 7 continents and 5 oceans.
·  Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify countries, continents and oceans.
·  Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
·  Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Session 1: Science and Geography
What is a fish?
Identify the features of fish; research the life cycle and habitat; make a simple aquarium with fish and underwater plants. / Children will:
·  Learn about the characteristics of fish.
·  Research and create life cycle for fish, including salmon.
·  Research and create lifelike habitats for fish, some children distinguishing between freshwater and saltwater.
·  Name the 5 oceans.
Session 2: PE
Move like fish
Create, practise and improve a pattern of movements to develop a dance inspired by the music of Saint-Saens. / Children will:
·  Try out different movements, operating at different levels, some low near the floor, and some high in the air.
·  Work with a partner to develop and mirror movements.
·  Work with a small group, co-operating together to use props and to develop movements to tell the story.
·  Peer review; improve and consolidate movements.
Session 3: Art
Look like a fish!
Create large fish stick puppets, props and back drop; make and write invitations to your class performance on fish shaped invites; compose and plan the dance story for a performance. / Children will:
·  Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products for the forthcoming performance.
·  Suggest ideas to help plan the story/plot for their performance.
Session 4: PE
Under the Sea
Children will perform their creative dance using puppets and movement, to invited audience. / Children will:
·  Perform their creative dance using simple movement patterns to the music of Saint-Saëns.

Resources

Session 1

Provided: ‘How to make a craft aquarium’ resource sheet; ‘Lifecycle of a goldfish’ resource sheet.

You will need: Flipchart (f/c) with large fish outline drawn; A3 paper to write list; Coloured markers; ‘Tiddler The Story Telling Fish’ Donaldson + Scheffler; Information books: fish / the ocean / aquariums; Cardboard boxes, paint, card, scissors, glue, thread, colouring pens and pencils, pipe cleaners; Globe and world map.

Session 2

Provided: Video clip of ‘The Aquarium’ by Saint-Saëns.

You will need: ‘Tiddler the Story Telling Fish’ Donaldson + Scheffler; Use of large open space such as the school hall; Chn in PE kits with bare feet; Dance equipment: dancing scarves, plus rainbow wands /holding streamers/ ribbons /crepe paper streamers.

Session 3

Provided:

You will need: ‘Tiddler the Story Telling Fish’ Donaldson + Scheffler; multiple copies; Information books: fish/the ocean/aquariums; Large pieces of fabric such as flat sheets, tablecloths or camouflage netting or similar; Large pieces art paper, pencils, paints + paint brushes; Polystyrene tiles/Styrofoam squares/sponges; Strips of card to make headbands; Fish shaped card/paper for the invitations; Collage materials such as fabric, sequins, ribbon, crepe paper, card, coloured paper, glue, scissors.

Session 4

Provided:

You will need: ‘Aquarium’ by Saint-Saëns; The resources created in Session 3 – puppets, headbands, backdrop; Pre-prepared speech bubble shapes on stiff paper; Device to record chn’s performance for school website and for a static display.
