Action/Notes
1. / Welcome and introductions / Apologies: Duncan White
2. / Notes from August/Matters arising / All minutes agreed.
SD reported that minutes are available on the regional network, but will continue to be sent out via email.
SD reported that AS had followed up with the Healthcare Science Implementation Network Group (HCSING) about the Clinical Engineering briefing paper proposed by Derek Pearson. Feedback to be provided when available.
SD confirmed that Sharon Oliver has been made aware of the impact of the late publication of the HEYH Funding Guide on the internal recruitment process for some Trusts. As an interim measure SD/AS to email successful Trusts with confirmation of funding.
AB reported that he will liaise with University of Liverpool course co-ordinator for more information on the proposed PTP course. AB to pass information onto HCS group.
DSB reported that there was no Themed Board update available as the last meeting had been cancelled. Next meeting has been set for Jan/Feb 2014. DSB to request that minutes from these meetings are made available for wider audience.
TOR-SD to send the TOR around again for comment.
3. / University of Bradford Clinical Engineering update / AW reported on the work that is currently being undertaken in the region to support the Clinical Engineering PTP at Uni of Bradford.
A curriculum development team has had its first meeting to look at the changes in programme provision, and how it will align to MSC accreditation progress to meet MSC specification.
Suggestion made that Hull should get involved in the development of the programme. AB to sent SD contact details.
AS reported that a discussion about funding support for this course is currently underway at a national level with LETB MSC Leads. The MSC Leads are in the process of developing and agreeing a model of support to ensure that students receive equivalent financial support regardless of where they are undertaking their placements. SD/AS to report any developments.
PT reported that the University are in the process of looking for placements for medical rehab, radiation and renal. AB reported that he was able to host a placement for radiation therapy. Suggestion made by AS that curriculum development group also helps with this workstream. PT to consider. PT reported that placement administrator is now in placement to help assist with placement capacity.
Group reports that it is unsure of the work being undertaken by Richard Scott (tasked by DH to assist in the process). PT also reported limited contact with RS. SD to email Sharon Harrison (MSC Team) for an update.
4. / University of Cumbria Update / AS keen for the group to consider potential regional requires of the Graduate Diploma being offered by the University of Cumbria (2015 intake). (Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Physics).Trusts to toward on requirements to SD.
LW provided an update on the meeting that took place with Charles Sloane from the University of Cumbria (14th October). AW reported that the proposed Practitioner Training Programme being offered by the University of Cumbria will cover the following 3 pathways: Nuclear Medicine, Therapy and Radiation Physics. The proposed model of delivery is 6x1 week blocks per year face to face learning at the University of Cumbria, with the remainder of the academic learning being delivered via distance learning with work-based learning taking place 2 days a week in Year 1, 3 days a week in Year 2, and 5 days a week in Year 3.
The proposed start date of the course was initially January 2014; however attendees were supportive of a September 2014 start date.
Attendees to consider potential number of students that their department would be willing to host. SD has already sent out a reminder email asking Trusts to consider placement support.
BD reported that she has emailed Charles Sloane stating their expression of interest in supporting the course by offering a placement.
5. / Dosimetrist Update / SD reported on the action points from the Dosimetrist meeting that was held mid October.
Attendees were asked to consider the following:
To determine if the SHU modules accessed by Hull are relevant for LTH and STH to use, where a radiographer is to be trained as a dosimetrist. The aim would be to align the training route for radiographers coming into dosimetry across the region and ensure the supporting modules are available within the SY education commission, rather than relying solely on in-house training.
To determine if the Trusts have any in-service candidates they would like to support to undertake the post-graduate diploma. This would allow progress within the commissioning discussion at HEYH, and possible available support in 2014.
To determine the possibility of Trusts offering PTP placements for the Medical Physics PTP, and in addition reach a decision about supporting this route to train the future workforce (in the absence of the CTCP training, and uncertainty about the sustainability of the radiographer supply).
DSB reported that recruitment from the radiotherapy route is not sustainable and that options are needed to explore the next steps.
6. / MSC Update / SD asked the group to look at the application form (section 1) and make suggestion as to how the rotations can be better identified. SD to send out a modified version when ready.
PTP scoping document
All encouraged to complete and return the PTP scoping document. To be sent to SD.
7. / National Update / AS reported that she attended the inaugural meeting of the Healthcare Science Implementation Network Group meeting (HCSING). This group has taken over from the England Implementation Board (EIB). AS indicated that workforce planning is to be a significant element of this group’s work.
8. / Workforce update / SD stated that an email has already been sent out to all regional contacts asking them to liaise with their HR teams in order that they can support in the implementation of the ESR (due to be rolled out December 2013).
DSB reported that Sue Hill is in the process of undertaking a workforce review in Medical Physics.
9. / Regional Open Day / ACM reported that the regional open day is due to take place Wednesday 15th Jan. It will also be extended to involve Clinical Engineering. ACM to use the same marketing methods as previously used as this appeared to target the right attendees. Suggestion made all that attendees are contacted after the 2014 recruitment process to gauge the candidates who have been successful in their application. In particular, those who attended the open day, and secured a training post in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
10. / Chief Scientific Director’s Update. / SV reported on the work being undertaken by the Deputy CSO and the Scientific Directors. Email for more details.
11. / AOB / DSB reported that Leeds are currently training students from Malta as a form on income generation.
Next meeting 3rd December: Regional HCS Event. Please email if you are interested in attending and have not done so already.
