UNITED SYNAGOGUE JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Youth Director (or Assistant Rabbi) responsible for children, youth, and young

families – Pinner United Synagogue

(2 years fixed term contract)

Location: Pinner Synagogue

Hours: Full Time

Reports to: Chairman of Pinner Synagogue (or their delegate)

Receive functional guidance from the Pinner Rabbi on religious matters

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

·  To build upon and develop Religious, Educational and Social programmes to engage children, youth and their parents in Pinner shul

·  Engage, teach & inspire young members and their parents across the religious and age spectrum

·  To liaise with local synagogues and with Tribe to support the delivery of exciting and engaging programmes for 0-20 years age group in Pinner shul

3  SCOPE OF JOB

Primary focus should be religious & educational

·  Primary focus is religious and educational, to be delivered via traditional and innovative methods

·  Use Shul services and chagim as a base to build from.

Target audience is all children and youth in our community and their parents

·  Ensure a clear pathway is developed from the youngest children through to teenagers in the organisation and running of regular Shabbat and Chagim services with a view to creating future leaders of services and of our younger members within our Community and the Community at large.

·  To work with and endeavour to positively engage the parents of our children and youth and create a common aim to enable our plans to reach fruition.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning, advertising and running programmes:

·  Hold regular Shabbat morning, Yom Tov and other services, building the capability for youth to lead those services

·  Events and programmes for youth and their families directly, involving them in both those and community-wide events.

·  Contributing to a Pinner Bar/Bat Miztvah programme to support the child and family & maintain their involvement after this time.

·  Work with Tribe to increase the value of Pinner Youth and Tribe capabilities, programmes & events.

Working with the senior Rabbi to co-ordinate activities:

·  Within the Pinner synagogue community

·  With local schools and schools attended by Pinner children especially Moriah Jewish Day School.

·  Working with Bar and Bat Mitzvah families

·  All matters relating to general community would be worked in conjunction and under direction of the senior rabbi and HOs together.

Other responsibilities:

·  To undertake any other activity or responsibility that would reasonably be expected within Rabbinic or community need.

·  Planning 6 month calendar of events, updated quarterly

·  Weekly communication with youth through various social media methods.

·  Attend regular meetings with line manager (minimum monthly) and with senior Rabbi

Generic other duties

Must be:

Committed to the aims of the United Synagogue and act as an ambassador for the organisation.

Comply with The United Synagogue’s policy and procedures and code of expectations.

Bring to the attention of senior staff any health and safety requirements, which become obvious. In the event of any immediate danger, to take the appropriate action to reduce risk to physical danger to employees, members, contractors, volunteers, children, parents, visitors or staff.

Work collaboratively with other colleagues across the organisation to ensure the United Synagogue can achieve its vision, mission and strategy.

Undertake appropriate training as requested by your line manager in conjunction with the Human Resources Department. And be committed to own continuous professional development.

Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Chief Executive or other designated senior staff.

Undertake such other duties that occasionally fall within the purpose of the post.

Maintaining high levels of discretion and confidentiality at all times.

This post requires a valid and current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate (formerly CRB) that is satisfactory to the United Synagogue. Please ensure that you complete the United Synagogue Application Form Part 2 appropriately.

Must be able to instil a passion for Judaism and Israel. / 
Articulate and able to relate to youth and young families and parents, with both strong oral and written communication skills. / 
Skilled in the utilisation of effective marketing strategies / 
Able to work with Senior Rabbi, HOs, board and members - a collaborative, team player contributing to the success of the wider team and organisational goals. / 
Ability to inspire and gain confidence and trust. / 
Computer literate. / 
Hold a recognised semicha or equivalent acceptable to the Beth Din and Office of Chief Rabbi / 
3 years relevant youth leadership experience / 
Previous relevant teaching experience / 
Driving Licence / 
