Although other federations continue to receive their normal financial allocations and are provided with the usual support, a focus federation is granted additional funding and general support to enable them to achieve key priorities that they have been unable to achieve. For example, in the 2012/13 financial year, the focus federation was Netball South Africa. This federation was supported to host a four-country netball diamond challenge. Tennis SA, as the focus federation for the 2013/14 financial year, was supported to host the Soweto Open and continued to enjoy increased attention until the end of the financial year. 6 SRSA Annual Report 2017-18 The focus federation for 2014/15 was Basketball South The focus federation for 2017/18 was volleyball. Foreword By the Minister of Sport and Recreation Ms Tokozile Xasa Minister Sport and Recreation South Africa SRSA Annual Report 2017-18 9 It gives me great pleasure to present the 2017/2018 Annual report. Our Department of Sport and Recreation continue to play a critical role in social cohesion and uniting our people and we continue in building a Winning and an Active Nation. This year 2018, our country South Africa, marks the centenary of the life of Nelson Mandela the father of our democracy under a theme: “Be The Legacy” and the centenary of Mama Albertina Sisulu, a fearless champion of democracy and human rights under a theme: “A Woman of fortitude.” Nelson Mandela dedicated his life in ensuring a better and more united South Africa. As a nation we cannot think of any person who symbolises unity in our country than Madiba. He understood that “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination”. Mama Sisulu was a woman of courage, discipline, integrity and she had enormous love for her people and the country. Her strength and resilience in fighting Apartheid while doing her motherly duties not only to her children but to many young people who sought to overthrow the Apartheid regime, epitomised Imbokodo. Mama Sisulu was a prisoner of hope that the people’s course shall triumph. Many young women in sport are following in her footsteps in fighting the culture of patriarchy.
